Colts place first round tender on Antoine Bethea

Antoine Bethea is a restricted free agent, but the dude isn't gong anywhere. Today, the Colts placed a first round tender on the fifth year free safety, meaning that any team that signs him to an offer sheet has to surrender a first round pick. The Colts have six days to match any offer a team gives Bethea.

Bethea was a sixth round draft pick in 2006, and is arguably one of the best safeties in the AFC. He may not get the publicity of a Troy Polamalu, but his impact on the field is just as great. Bethea has also been the most durable and consistent DB on the Colts. While players like Bob Sanders, Kelvin Hayden, and Marlin Jackson have missed significant time in recent years because of various injuries, Bethea continues to start game after game, producing Pro Bowl caliber numbers.

Since Bethea replaced Mike Doss as the starting safety in 2006, the Colts pass defense has been one of the best in all of football. In 2008, they set an NFL record for fewest touchdowns passes allowed.

He was tendered a first rounder as well.

Yep

And I would give up a 1st, 3rd, and my first born for an All-Pro potential left tackle.

I agree...

I would have liked to see a 1st and 3rd… better still a long term deal. While I don’t think anyone will sign him away for a 1st rounder, if I’m the Texans, Steelers or Giants I might stop and think about it for a little bit.

by invisibulman on Mar 3, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

If the Giants want to do it

Go ahead. I doubt any of those 3 teams would give up their first round for Bethea even in this weak safety class.

I actually think the Safety class is quite strong this year… though the strength comes outside of the first round. If any of those 3 came after him I would expect it to be the Texans since they have the lowest draft pick and have seen him play more often.

He should have gotten the highest tender

because we underpayed him the last few years? I don’t follow that logic. The Colts are tendering him to either the amount they think he’s worth or the lowest amount so that he will not sign anywhere.

Good move.

Now, go lock up Bullitt. As long as Sanders is on this team, we need 3 starting caliber safeties.

exactly, the posts arent equal.

Other than the Colts, there is no team in the league with 3 starting caliber safeties. That was AAA’s post/point: If Bob Sanders is one of your starters, you need a starting level safety behind him.

If Sanders had Bethea’s durability and Sanders skill set, there is no way in hell the Colts keep Bethea, Sanders, and Bullitt, they would trade Bullitt for something they need (ie either a draft pick or an OL they can use) and have DEPTH.

Of course the Colts need 3 safeties (hell, here’s to betting they’ll have 5 on their roster, since thats what they had this year). There is a difference between depth and a need to have a starting caliber player on the bench because there is a high likelihood that the #1 on the depth chart will play around 4 total games.

They grab Charles Brown with the pick and take Chad Jones with pick 31. Either way, we win.

What is the timing around this now?

Two questions:

  • When can other teams start making offers on RFAs who have been tendered?
  • When is the last day to make offers to RFAs?

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Mar 3, 2010 4:46 PM EST reply actions

Teams can make offers

from March 5 to the end of the signing period (don’t have that date handy, but I think it’s in April).

March 5th. After then, anyone not tendered or signed to a long-term deal immediately becomes an UFA.

oops I meant my second question to be

When is the last day for other teams to make offers to tendered RFAs – you answered that in the first response.

Also, I understood (again from PFT) that an RFA who is not tendered or signed isn’t an UFA, but just an RFA with no tender/offer. Will be an important distinction for the Colts.

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Mar 3, 2010 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

I really don't think that's correct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restricted_Free_Agent

In addition to the following outcomes, if a player does not receive an offer sheet from his original team, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

I’ve also heard the same thing in other places. That’s what you get from trusting PFT.

I'm not sure how one can say that Bethea's impact on the Colts is as great as Polamalu's on the Steelers

Had he not been injured, the Steelers would probably have gone 13-3 this season. Bethea has never been injured, so you can’t say with any certainty what kind of impact an injury to him would have. The Steelers had the #1 pass defense in 2008 with Troy, and the #16 pass defense in 2009 without him even though the supporting cast was nearly identical.

It's hard to make the argument either way

The only time Bethea missed was the last 3 games of 2007 and if I recall right 1 or 2 of those games were throwaway games anyway. The one that would’ve mattered was against the Raiders and we won that without him. I think everyone knows what the Steelers become without Polamalu.

But, if it were up to me, I wouldn’t want to find out how the Colts D would look without #41
