Ryan Mathews, RB - Fresno State
Pick made by chad72:
Having cut LT (who was picked up by the Jets), the Chargers badly need a primary RB that can carry enough of the load to help their running game along with Darren Sproles in their offense. During the brief period that LT was injured last year, the Chargers got off to a rocky start and Sproles could not carry the load effectively enough as a primary back while doing all the other things he could do well.
Ryan Mathews can be that primary back for the Chargers that will be able to carry the ball about 15-20 times a game, be able to catch the ball and be able to pass protect as well. He has good size and strength to get through the line of scrimmage and the acceleration to break into the secondary. He has good balance to take a hit and keep his feet. No known off-field concerns. Very humble, asked for permission from former Fresno All-American Dale Messer to wear his retired No. 21. Was granted permission from the 70-year old Messer after a face-to-face meeting.
How will he impact the 2010 Chargers?
Standing at 6'0", 218 lbs, Ryan Mathews is a decisive and tough runner who can do it all. He will do the primary back work for the Chargers and let Sproles flourish in the role where Sproles is most dangerous which is limited carries as an RB, and used more as a pass catching RB that returns kickoffs and punts as well. Ryan Mathews hould be able to help them in the red zone as well like LT did last year. Seems like a perfect match for that high flying offense of the Chargers.
If Mathews is taken #28 by the Chargers, he would be the 1st RB taken in the first round by the Chargers since 2001, when they selected LaDainian Tomlinson #5 overall. He would also be the first RB from Fresno State taken in the 1st round, and the first player from FSU taken in the 1st round since 2005 (Logan Mankins).
