Colts restricted free agents not tendered... yet

Paul Kuharsky was kind enough to post a list of restricted free agents on Colts who have have not had a draft pick tender placed on them:

Potential restricted free agents: WR Hank Baskett, S Antoine Bethea, S Melvin Bullitt, OL Dan Federkeil, CB Aaron Francisco, LB Tyjuan Hagler, CB Marlin Jackson, CB Tim Jennings, DT Antonio Johnson, OT Charlie Johnson, LB Freddy Keiaho, DT Dan Muir, CBPR T.J. Rushing.

Guys like Baskett and Jennings are likely gone. I'm surprised Melvin Bullitt, Mookie Johnson, and Daniel Muir have not been tendered. Muir and Mookie were the starting DTs for the entire 2009 season, and Melvin Bullitt is one of the better strong safeties in the AFC.

The only restricted free agent who has received a tender so far is Antoine Bethea.

I'm not surprised.

Every year, we freak out about the draft picks not signing, and then they get signed some 2 days before camp starts. The Colts always do this, and it isn’t like they have to negotiate at all with the player to place a tender on them.

I will only start hyperventilating when the deadline passes tomorrow.

I think

Polian wanted to see, what the other teams are doing. But now would be a good time to release the information.

I was actually surprised

that we already heard about Bethea’s tender; I was assuming we wouldn’t hear until the final possible moment (and only then when everything had worked through the system and gotten to the press)

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Mar 4, 2010 11:16 AM EST reply actions

it was probably leaked by Bethea's agent

so that other teams could prepare to poach.

Baskett and Jennings

High on my list of “people I never want to see wearing a horseshoe ever again”.

by slash196 on Mar 4, 2010 11:30 AM EST reply actions

I agree on Baskett

But a cheap Jennings wouldn’t be the worst thing for a 4th or 5th CB. I always think “is it an upgrade”, and you can’t say that some 7th round rookie or UFA is going to better than Tim. Guys like Lacey aren’t found that often.

Tim Jennings blows.

Bullitt, Muir and Mookie

If I were Polian, Bullitt, Muir and Mookie would be my top priorities next on the RFA list.

Heck, Moala could not crack the starting line up and we let go of Big Ed, so our best DTs were Mookie and Muir together with absolutely no fallback if one of them was injured (Brock, Foster, Dawson weren’t cutting it against the bigger O-linemen we faced).

It is imperative that Bullitt, Muir and Mookie are tendered to a 2nd round grade at least for each. That way, given the depth on the DL and OL in this draft, it is almost a certainty that we retain them.

by chad72 on Mar 4, 2010 12:35 PM EST reply actions

Also Ch. Johnson

He would easily be a better guard, than all, but one or 2 guys in this draft class. I would tender him with a 1st rounder.

by Ty46 on Mar 4, 2010 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

2nd round would be fine

I think we can get away with a 2nd rounder on Charlie Johnson, he was a 6th round draft pick originally. I do think the depth in the OL and DL hurts the D-linemen and O-linemen that will be tendered as RFA this year.

We are not talking Pro Bowl linemen here

Let us not kid ourselves, Mookie and Muir are not Pro Bowl linemen caliber, at least not yet. Jahri Evans is, big difference, don’t you think?

by chad72 on Mar 4, 2010 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

It just means,

OL isn’t getting low tenders, because of the draft depth. Although the inside draft class is weak and the 1st round tackles are only better, than in the past.

Aaron Francisco

I am just thinking Aaron Francisco is bad luck.

Both the teams he played for in the last 2 years – Cardinals and the Colts both lost their SBs and both of them finished 32nd in rushing in the postseason. (Just kidding)

Chew on this, the Colts in 2008 & the Chargers in 2009 finished 31st in rushing and both of them ended up with a one-and-done.

Let us finish somewhere in the middle of the pack in running, please :-). We run 42 times in SB XLI, we win it, and we run 19 times in SB XLIV, we lose it. I just need Peyton to have the confidence to call the running plays, which would mean we would need to control tempo in more regular season games with more running than we have done so far, even when we fall behind in games. We did a good job in red zone running in 2009, just need to extrapolate that to our plays outside the red zone as well.

Tender CJ... but that's it.

I would probably put a 2nd round tender on Charlie Johnson. That’s about $1.7 million. It’s a little pricey for a guy who is only average as a Guard in the NFL, but not unreasonable. Mookie, Bullit and Muir are role players. They are not top notch starters. Putting a low tender on each of them would give us right of first refusal, but since they were all UDFAs there is not draft pick compensation. Any more than that would be overpaying. I would make an attempt to resign them, but probably for less than a qualifying offer amount. I would probably throw Hagler into that group as well.

I agree

I do believe C.J., Bullitt, Mookie and Muir should all get 2nd round tenders.

by chad72 on Mar 4, 2010 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

How is my prediction looking now?

Just came back to tell ya I told you so :-). All of the above 4 – C.J., Bullitt, Mookie and Muir did get 2nd round tenders like I said they would.

by chad72 on Mar 5, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

I realize they are valuable...

but I’m looking at replacement cost. In this draft, I think finding a guy as good as Bullitt (or better) would not be difficult. Also, far less expensive than a 2nd round tender. As for Mookie and Muir, if we went to the market with $1.7 million in hand looking for a DT I would expect to get a player better than that. I’m on the fence about Mookie, he might be worth the 2nd round tender but I would still be targeting something in the low 7 figures for these guys.

Where?

I wish they would do some reporting.

If they could reach the agents of Jennings and Francisco, than what’s up with the agents of Bullitt, Muir, AJ, Ch J, Hagler…
