Has the loser of the Super Bowl ever won it the next year?

People, I need your help. I have been a fan of the Colts since I was four. They came to Indy when I was one and their the only football team I have ever and will ever root for. But I can't seem to get my mind off that game. It just keeps coming back and coming back and it just leaves me depressed, so I need help. I need something to raise my spirits. So here it is, "Has any Super Bowl loser ever won the Super Bowl the next year?"

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Sigh

All I ever wanted was for them to win at least two. It’s all I ever wanted for them. I don’t understand how the Colts are becoming the Atlanta Braves of the NFL. This team doesn’t deserve this.

For ever Indianapolis has been an afterthought Mid West sports city, having to watch while Chicago got title after title. This city needs this team to be a dynasty just like Pittsburgh needed the Steelers to be. The Colts need this. We need this.

Good thing for that correlation/causation saying.

Don't be down

Remember, there is a first time for anything. The team will be basically unchanged next year, likely even better. That is a good sign

This is a great team!

With Peyton as our QB-anything is possible. They’ve defied the odds so many times, ANYTHING can happen. And even though we didn’t win this year, it was a hell of a ride.

You're right

I’m just a worrier when it comes to these things. I have been a fan of this team since I went to a Colts game when I was five at the Hoosier Dome. All I want is to see my home team become what it was meant to be; a dynasty.

Don't know

but don’t worry, we will win it next year.

Someone has to break every record

Maybe it’s time the SB loser won the next one…

THE ANSWER IS YES

Dallas Cowboys lost it in 1970 and won it in 1971
Miami Dolphins lost it in 1971 and won it in 1972

/sorry for the shouting, but nobody came out and actually gave the simplest answer to the question, which was “Yes”

How can you not love a team that does this?

As a NY Mets fan

I hate you for being a St. Louis Cardinals fan =)

That was such a good series but I swear when Endy Chavez made that catch I figured “The Mets are going to the World Series.” Then I saw Beltran strike out looking with the bases loaded and the game on his bat =(

Hopefully in 2010

we can use our Super Loss as the spring board for an undefeated season like the Dolphins did in 1972. I’d also like to see Peyton reclaim his single-season TD record.

If that would happen....

If both of those things were to happen I would run the streets of Indianapolis naked. Women will cheer and men will look on in envy. LOL

Ha

If that happens…damn, I don’t know what I would do. How about a pilgrimage? How about a naked pilgrimage? lol

Why does everyone want to get naked?

We can have just as much fun clothed.

Colts were better than most Super Bowl losers

It has been a long time since a team lost a Super Bowl and won the next, but that’s partly because a lot of the losers have been much weaker than the teams that beat them. Usually there’s been a dominant conference that wins year after year. The NFC won 13 in a row during the 1980’s & 90’s, the AFC has won 9 of 13 since then – at one point winning 6 of 7, and the AFC also won 11 of 13 between 1969 and 1981. So most years the loser gets to the Super Bowl by winning a weaker conference than the winner did. If they made it back to the Super Bowl the following year, they were likely to again face a superior team who had won a superior conference.
It’s not a matter of teams automatically collapsing from the trauma of losing a Super Bowl – seven teams have gone back to the Super Bowl the year after losing it: Bills (92, 93 & 94), Broncos (88), Vikings (75), plus the Dallas and Miami teams that won. Several others returned two or three years later.

why I'm an ex-Viking fan

I grew up in Minnesota and stayed with the Vikings as I moved around the country. Finally dropped them before the 2005 season when I moved to Indianapolis and decided to make it my permanent home. Figured why keep rooting for a team whose players routinely act like rogues off the field when my new hometown had one the best and classiest teams in the league? Felt kinda weird watching them in the NFC championship game without rooting for them. (thought the Saints would be easier for the Colts to beat). Felt very natural rooting against Favre though!

cool

at least you chose the Colts, too!

I guess my ID could also be ex-Raider fan, but I do still root for them against most other teams.
