What are the Colts doing during the FA frenzy
Football Outsiders creator Aaron Schatz gives us the answer.
#ssac Famous people moment: Just ran into Bill Polian buying replacement toothpaste because he forgot his.
The "ssac" tag stands for the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. Playfully called Dorkapolooza by Bill Simmons it's a statgeek Mecca. While other GMs are vying to pay a handful of top FAs mega-bucks Polian is at MIT learning about some of the latest methods and discoveries of those that try to analyze sports statistically.
The Colts aren't active in grabbing veteran FAs right now, but that doesn't mean they aren't working to improve the team.

and they picked an awesome weekend to have it
First time in 2010 that it’s getting to 50 degrees, and sunny. I plan on going on a couple walks or runs with the wife so I can “accidentally” run into some of these guys.
"If you don't [draft me], I promise you I'll come back and kick your ass for the next 15 years."
how far is MIT from Baltimore?

It may be.

Not far enough!
Make it happen Polian!

Get Gaither, Polian
Or else I will strike you.

I'm not as receptive to the idea, after thinking about it some
1. To give up a potential impact player drafted with the Colts’ 1st round pick this year, when Gaither will be a free agent next year who Baltimore might not re-sign with Oher in the fold.
2. Both Charlie Johnson and Tony Ugoh are off the books then, so the numbers game works out perfectly then.
3. We don’t know if Gaither is even smart enough to play in the Colts offense, he entered the 2007 Supplemental Draft because academic ineligibility necessitated it. He probably is, but I suppose it may be worth mentioning.
4. I’ve seen one Baltimore beat writer this offseason say, or repeat from on high in the franchise, that “Gaither needs to get stronger mentally and physically” Gaither deal with injuries to his neck, foot, and ankle last season.
5. His agent is that weasel Drew Rosenhaus, so any assumption that he would be cheaper to sign long-term as a RFA is just that.
If the scenario is trading for his rights instead of using an offer sheet, if the Colts trade say a 2nd round pick and maybe a 5th round pick (that seems to be the going rate for starters changing teams) to Baltimore for his rights, I would consider it.
Otherwise I would look to sign him next offseason.
As a side note
is there ANY picture that is less flattering than the one always used for Polian on SB? I think not.
How can you not love a team that does this?
I don't think there is.
