So far, so good.......
The Colts appear to be making all the right moves so far in this offseason. Getting defensive captain and leader, Gary Brackett, resigned to a long term deal was definitely a step in the right direction. Next up is getting Manning's contract extended. They also made some great decisions in extending tender offers to Pro Bowl Safety Antoine Bethea, Left Tackle Charlie Johnson, super sub, Melvin Bulitt and the dynamic DT duo of Muir and Mook Johnson.
They have had to make some tough roster decisions on Raheem Brock, Jim Sorgi, Marlin Jackson and Tyjuan Hagler, while not so hard decisions on Tim Jennings, Aaron Francisco, T.J. Rushing, Dan Federkeil, Freddy Keiaho, Michael Toudouze and Hank Baskett (hope no one bought any of these jerseys last year).
I am sure we will see a few more moves before the draft. I am still standing by my initial thoughts on where the Colts are looking in this year's draft:
1. A couple Offensive Tackles who can pass protect and pancake defenders on the run.
2. Additional depth on the defensive line, for both DT and DE.
3. A stud LB to develop under Brackett and Session. Watch your back Phillip Wheeler, your days could be numbered.
4. A return man who can move the ball further than 5 yards per return.

Damn/Greedy
I agree that so far Polian is making all the right moves. However, I must point
out that due to the damn injuries, the Colts may not improve sufficiently this year.
The loss of Jackson and Hagler create holes that must be filled immediately.
The Colts only have six picks, and the shopping list is long: OLT, ORT, DE, OLB,
ILB, CB/KR, G/C, TE. Polian must avoid drafting players with injury histories and/or
are marginal in size. The Colts have had an inordinate amount of injuries in
recent years, and the drafting philosophy must change. Hopefully in the second
round of Free Agency, a couple of these needs can be filled. Of further concern
( and a possible great opportunity for Polian ) is the logjam of free agents that may
be created in 2011 when the uncapped year ends and a new labor agreement takes
effect. Clayton at ESPN talks about the possiblity of 250 free agents ( whose 1-year
non-cap-year contracts will be up )! What Polian must do is renegotiate/extend the contracts of those players he considers essential for 2011 and beyond, thus leaving the Colts in an advantageous position vs the other teams in grabbing free agents.
If he’s as smart as I think he is, we can hope for the following future scenario:
2010: Colts defeat Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium in Super Bowl 45.
2011: Colts defend Super Bowl title at The Luke by defeating the Packers.
2012: Colts tie Packers record of three straight World Championships ( 1965/1967 )
and get revenge by beating the Saints at the Superdome in Super Bowl 47.
I know, I’m greedy.
Resigning
Remember, guys like Jackson, Hagler, and Keiaho can still be resigned for cheap to fill holes. And there are also guys on the practice squad and developing guys who can fill holes. Santi has been developing nicely as a complimentary TE and has shown flashes, for example. There are also several guys, like Giguere, who can be a returner (Which, IMHO, has less to do with the talent of the returner and mroe to do with blocking).
I don’t think the situation is as dire as you initially indicate, but I do like your predicted outcomes.

Re-signing and re-signed

Yes, that was my reasoning. How to torment a Pats fan.

Ummm, I am rethinking this post after they cut Lilja
Quite, somebody talk me off the ledge on this move with Lilja:)
Improving the running game is the most important task this offseason
If that is the main thing Bill Polian and staff get done this spring, then I could be quite content. Whatever that entails, although it surely rests in the blocking up front and fielding an offensive line that moves people off the ball and doesn’t let their backs get blown up 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
Peyton isn’t getting any younger and it’s unrealistic to expect him to keep carrying this team on his back in the passing game. His effectiveness, it seems to me, would increase if he has a running game opponents have to not only respect, but fear. Joe Addai could really scare some folks running stretch plays if some big nasties up front were knocking folks off the line and giving him the chance to show the speed he does indeed have. And don’t forget Donald Brown and his big play ability.
A superior running game would account for a lot of other perceived shortcomings of a roster that I just heard Jim Irsay rave about. This team does not have as many glaring needs as we fans sometimes tend to believe they have. IMO . . .get the running game juiced up to another level, and this team will be awfully tough to beat(like they aren’t tough to beat already).
