Bethea drawing interest from Washington, Dallas, NY Jets, and others

Well, this ain't good.  I wouldn't mind Washington's first rounder, but I certainly don't want to see Bethea go anywhere.  Can you imagine how good the Jets pass defense would be if Bethea played for them? I guess it would be fun to watch Bethea make life hell for Brady twice a year, but I'd rather see him do it once a year in Colts blue.

I don't think either team

Would send a first rounder for Bethea. Might be interested, but I don’t think it will materialize into any sort of offer.

I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

I was just thinking that!!!

If the Colts could get the Redskins’ 1st round pick and draft Eric Berry, Oh. My. God. I think every Colts fan should kiss Bill Polian’s old, wrinkly, hairy ass if that happens, and I’ll be the first one in line!!!!

Okung and Okung Hell?

He must have an evil twin!

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Not worth it.

Berry is also a special player, and we don’t particularly need a DT while we will need a safety if Bethea goes away.

consider though

that bethea was found in the sixth round. Im not saying that the Colts will find someone as good as him if he does sign with another club, but I dont think safety’s are all that hard to find. I personally think the pass rush is more vital than the secondary when it comes to pass defense and a guy like suh or mccoy could fix a whole lot of problems. It would finally give the Colts an interior rush that they have never had and would free up Mathis and Freeney without the need to blitz. One of those two could be the “Warren Sapp” of our defense that could take this defense to the heights of the 2002 tampa bay bucs.

by metal_militia on Mar 6, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly. An addition like that, granted Suh lives up to his expectations, could make this DLine all-time dominant. You don’t need a great secondary when the QB doesn’t have a pocket.

forgot to mention

how is it not worth the trade value if the Colts hypothetically traded the number 4 overall pick and a second to move up for suh or mccoy? they would still have another first round pick so they really wouldnt be losing anything.

yeah just saw this

I hope we do match whatever the jets may give him if they are going to actively pursue him. 1st round selection is nice, but the Jets first rounder is too low for my liking

by metal_militia on Mar 6, 2010 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Love Bethea, but I'd take a 1st for him

especially if it’s in the range where Earl Thomas will be around (probably has to be before the Steelers at 18) and if it’s in Eric Berry territory I’ll drive to Indy and pack Bethea’s things for him.

by shake n bake on Mar 6, 2010 8:20 PM EST reply actions

id take a first for him too

but i not the jets first or anything that is one or two picks ahead of the Colts. For me its got to be a mid to high first for Bethea or nothing

This ^

Bethea is important to the team, but i’d trade him for a top-15 prospect that’s more of a long-term solution. Washington’s #4 would be perfect!

if this happened

I would love to have Berry in our secondary.
Plus I’ve heard that Dan Williams’s stock is dropping and if he drops past 18 or so, I think he could fall all the way to us.
That would mean Berry in the backfield and hopefully Dan at NT with Fili at UT for the future.

We can worry about pass rush depth and o-line later on and through UDFAs

I would probably cry out of pure joy if this happened.

by stonewall12345678 on Mar 6, 2010 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

if it was a late first whether I'd match depends on the offer sheet

if it’s crazy big or poison pilled I’d take the 1st, if it’s reasonable I might keep him and if it’s a great deal, thanks very much for negotiating the extension for me, unnamed other team.

Bethea is an elite safety. Top 10 in the league. No way I’m letting him go for the crap shoot that is the NFL draft.

The smart thing to do

The Polian thing to do is to keep the player you know. There are 255 picks in the draft. The odds of picking a super star are pretty slim. If we do get an offer I hope Polian does the right thing and matches it.

is Bill Polian. Don’t get me wrong. If I had to choose, I would take Bethea, but if Polian chooses the draft pick, I would totally understand it and trust the old guy. Wouldn’t kiss his old ass though…lol

by shake n bake on Mar 6, 2010 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Preach it brother!

Skywalker, you are dead on. Bethea is a known quantity and, more importantly, is worth more than a first round pick! Next to Ed Reed, he is the best FS in the league. Keeping Bethea is better than gambling on a first rounder because of Bethea’s talent and consistency. Without him, the secondary gets carved up way more than it did.

Also, Berry would not be a replacement. Berry is a SS and Bethea is a FS. They require different skill sets.

by 2ndBlueGeneration on Mar 6, 2010 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

Berry...

has enough talent to play either.
His ball hawking and corner skills are perfect for a free safety

by stonewall12345678 on Mar 6, 2010 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

Assumption

That’s what that is. Berry is a good SS and has talent there. He is still unknown at FS. I would not want to convert a guy like that at the NFL level.

Remember, Mandritch and Leaf were “sure fire” picks. Look how that turned out. Keep the known quantity. It ain’t broke, don’t try and fix it.

by 2ndBlueGeneration on Mar 6, 2010 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

If..

Monte Kiffin thinks he’d be a great Tampa-2 safety, I have 100% faith in him.
Don’t get me wrong, bethea is awesome, but I feel Berry would be better in the long run.

by stonewall12345678 on Mar 6, 2010 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

this kid has done NOTHING

Nothing I tell you, to prove he can handle the NFL. This conversation is really making me start to hate the draft and how people portray these kids coming out of college. We are still unsure if they can even hack it at the NFL level. Bethea is a proven probowl, superbowl winning safety. You want to know why these teams are interested in giving up their first round pick for Bethea? Its for the exact same reasons that I’m ranting on about. If I asked you to trade your mercedes for a mystery car would you do it? Mercedes (Bethea) is a very good car (player). Not many cars (FS) better than it (Bethea). The odds of getting a volkswagen (bust) are much higher than getting a corvette (Better player).

Sticking with Bethea is the best and smartest thing to do.

As long as we have Peyton (and no surprise gay onside kicks are made) we will always have a chance to win.

by skywalker on Mar 6, 2010 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

So

you’re syaing that we should never draft anyone???

by stonewall12345678 on Mar 6, 2010 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

Missing the point

If the deal is to send a talented, proven, and, most importantly, impact player to another team for an unknown quanitiy, it is a terrible move by the front office. Draft with the picks you have, either by taking players or trading for more picks, but losing one of your best defenders is idiocy

by 2ndBlueGeneration on Mar 6, 2010 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

by skywalker on Mar 6, 2010 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

you are treating the unknown like it can only be worse though

A guy like Berry doesn’t just have a high potential to bust. He has a higher potential to be an All-Pro player.

If you are that far to the conservative side on the risk/reward of the draft then why not give a 1st for Gaither, a 2nd for Leon Washington and a 3rd for Kirk Morrison

by shake n bake on Mar 6, 2010 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

Prudent, not conservative

Berry does have potential, but I think Bethea is too vital to defense to trade for a first round pick and the possibility that Berry might end up being a better free saftey than Bethea, who is already at the top.

Ultimately, Bethea is too important to the defense to be let go.The only reason to let him go would be a over-the-top contract that the Colts can’t match, IMO.

Berry was coached by a coach that coached in a place coaches call the National Football League

I don’t think this coach would coach Berry and tell Berry to leave his coaching for coaching in the NFL if this coach felt like his coaching could help improve this kids coachability at the next level. I’m going to trust former National Football League Coach Monte Kiffin, who told Berry to gtfo out of college because he was ready for the pros.

All of my dreams have been fulfilled

I’ve been frontpaged on Stampede Blue, had a post rec’d enough to be posted under “Recommended Fanposts”, assisted a comment to be selected as SB Nation’s “Comment of the Day” (didn’t know that it existed), and now my own comment was good (and dirty) enough to turn green.

In the spirit of the Academy Awards tonight, I wanna thank my momma for giving me the necessary tools to write a somewhat grammatically correct statement unlike some of our friends (cough 805 cough.); but the person who deserves the most credit is Spazmo. Spazmo, what can I say about him that hasn’t already been said: he’s an asshole and a douche, but he has allowed not just me, but all of us to express our sexual and dirty thoughts without having Chris Hansen show up at our front doors. I thank you, my friend :-)

Good but not great

Bethea is good but not great. We picked him in the 6th round and Bullitt is an udrafted free agent. If we get a mid to high 1st round pick for Bethea we take it no question. This is what you need to draft franchise players. Bethea is good but he is no franchise player. . .

by Silver7 on Mar 7, 2010 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

I think people are a little too high on Bethea. He isn’t THAT good.

Lets try it this way

First round draft pick = X=?
Antoine Bethea=41=41

As long as we have Peyton (and no surprise gay onside kicks are made) we will always have a chance to win.

Remember, the Colts still get right of first refusal

And they know Bethea is a big-time contributor. You don’t just give up two-time Pro Bowl safeties for the heck of it.

That said, the Colts need some cornerstone young players. Freeney is getting old, Wayne is getting old. They could probably turn the #4 into a mid-first rounder and a mid-second rounder and absolutely clean up on day 1. I’m sure it’s something Polian and Irsay and Caldwell would have to think about long and hard.

by slash196 on Mar 7, 2010 6:19 AM EST reply actions

I'm not sure about this...

I figured he would draw some interest when they only tendered him a 1st rounder, but maybe that was the idea. If the Jets or Cowboys make a play for him we still have right of first refusal. With those low draft picks, I think we would be better resigning Bethea. However, if Washington is dumb enough to give up a top 5 pick… I think we have to take it. As good as Bethea is, I would take Russle Okung in has place without batting an eyelash. As good as the safety class is this year, we could use the #31 pick on a safety and mitigate some of the pain of losing Bethea.

Taylor Mays maybe?

Maybe his stock has improved enough to get him back into the first round, but he is an option I personally like.

No! Taylor Mays is a workout warrior. I think there are much better safties than him

by 2ndBlueGeneration on Mar 8, 2010 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

No thanks on Mays...

Can’t stand workout warriors. Earl Thomas would be my hope, but he is likely to be gone. At #31 I would be targeting Chad Jones.

Negotiation

I could see the Colts accepting a 2nd round pick and swapping 1st round picks with another early round team for Bethea. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

by Silver7 on Mar 7, 2010 10:10 PM EST reply actions

I love Bethea

I would hate to lose him. I can’t imagine seeing him in another uniform besides Colt blue. However, if the 1st rounder we get for him is not a bust (and it doesn’t have to be a FS) we still have Bulitt to work with if Sanders comes back ready and injury free. That being said, what are the chances Bob can come back and play a full season without getting hurt. I see potential in this, but I’m just so skidish about letting a proven and durable FS go after everything he has done for us. What do you guys think. What are some other options?

"I'veeeee gooooot veins, They carry blood all over my BADY! That's how Jon Mayer would say it. BADY. I'm really into him right now. YOU BETTER BE OK WITH THAT!"

by BraveMc33 on Mar 8, 2010 11:18 AM EST reply actions

I think the durable part is key. With Bob always getting hurt, Bethea is needed to step in at SS while Bethea is the constant at FS and not something I’d like to lose.

by 2ndBlueGeneration on Mar 8, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

Bethea is FS

The problem with Bethea leaving is Bob and Melvin both play strong safety and end up in more run support than making plays on the ball. Although I think Bethea has terrible hands, his hands are better than Bob or Melvin. If Bethea leaves we need to draft one good free safety type or pick one up in free agency.
