Perspective
"Tragedy and comedy are but two aspects of what is real, and whether we see the tragic or the humorous is a matter of perspective." -Arnold Beisser
I know that I am late to the "end of the decade reflections" party but I just came across an article which I found to be an extremely interesting write up.
This is an excellent article that I found at Mile High Report looking at SB's and coaches. We all parrot the same line that winning a SB is hard and it is extremely difficult to sustain success. The data from the article puts this into a historical context and gives us a new perspective on the difficulties of being successful in the NFL.
When looking at back at the various records of the Colts and overall accomplishments, it is important to be able to not only put it in the context of a cap era but a historical one as well. Depending upon our perspective those accomplishments are less or more impressive.
We can either look at our post-season record separate from the perspective of our astounding regular season win streak and the difficulty of winning in the NFL or we can view it from the historical perspective the article gives us.
The author of the article also mentions in one of his comments the various steps that are taken en route to a SB.
The goal of every team is to win the Super Bowl,
To win the SB, you have to be able to win the conference,
To win the conference you have to be able to win the divisional round,
To win the divisional round, you have to be able to either win the division, or the wildcard spot
To win the wildcard, you have to win more than you lose
To win more than you lose, you have to have your players play as a single unit
To have your players play as a single unit, you have to get the right players in place
Multiple steps which must be accomplished and then repeated for sustained success. Many opportunities for the you know what to hit the you know what
I just think that most fans from teams who have never won anything or have never sustained success undervalue regular season wins...which is ironic.
I must admit that I'm not what the point of this post is beyond wanting to both share the article and to give some random thoughts concerning the accomplishments of the Colts.
I just get tired of the same old quips and digs about the Colts post season record and by extension Peyton Manning.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

I never undervalue the Colts
Now that I’ve gotten over losing the SB, I realize how proud I am of them even getting there. Some teams don’t have ANY hope of getting to the big game. We had a heck of a season. No one thought we’d even make the playoffs, let alone almost win it all. Watching the Colts play all season is a dream. What they’ve done during the reg. season, is amazing. Watching Peyton play is a privelege.
This attitude that if you don’t win it all, then your season isn’t a success is sort of crazy. It’s hard to win one game let alone 14. I’m proud to be a Colts fan. They are the epitome of success!

You CAN'T undervalue the Colts if you're a hoosier!
Without them what other pro sports team do we have? The PACERS???
Pfft. The Butler Bulldogs or even the Pike Red Devils could beat their ass!

You're right. This is a football town now.
High School football here is pretty good too.
But there’s nothing like going to a Colts game. A lot of people around here complain about having an expensive stadium, over other more socially important things.
I don’t see why we can’t have it all.

Shit yeah!
Gordon Hayward would annihilate them. They could play 5 on 1 and Hayward would win!

Easily.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Butler is going to go to the sweet 16. Whatever happens after that is anyone's guess.
Rec'd for heart-felt optimism

When it comes to the Colts,
I wear my heart on my sleeves. It drives my husband crazy, which is kinda fun.

Me neither
I’ve never been to a live game. It is really one of my many dreams. I’m a huge fan, but I guess I’m missing that little thingy…
Being able to be a fan of such a great team is already a pleasure. Watching Peyton Manning play is a blessing…

It's an experience for sure.
If you ever get the chance, go. Even if you’re in the nosebleeds, it’s worth it. To be there with that crowd, to feel the energy on every 1st down (and yes, you will yell “FIRST DOWN” every time), to eat 8 dollar BBQ nachos! Oh god it’s so worth it. I’m going next year to see the Colts v. Giants no matter what. The Giants are my #2 team so even if I have to sell a kidney on the black market I’m gonna be there.

Little Eli has something to do with that?
Or you just like the team?

Actually, its because of the game you reference in the first line of your sig...
Well, technically, I rooted for them all through the playoffs that year after our guys got eliminated but that Superbowl victory turned them into my #2 and they will be until Eli stops playing for them. I actually named my son Eli b/c of that SB game. Too many little girls running around named Peyton for me to try and pull that one off…

Nice story. And I think Eli is a pretty nice name.
Same here. We root for the Mannings here at home. Peyton is #1 and at #2, but very very far, Eli.

"The goal of every team is to win the Super Bowl"
Really? Weird. Looking at the Raiders, Redskins, Lions or Browns it looks as if it was the complete opposite..
