Horizon League Championship Open Thread
I'm back! My absence over the past few days was not due to a certain someone's legal troubles(although that certainly didn't help). I have been extremely busy recently with my AP tests less than two months away and a 15-page research paper due in English class. Anyways, I know that many of you are Butler/college basketball fans, so I thought it would be apropriate to have an open thread for the Horizon League Championship game which pits the aforementioned Bulldogs against the evil Wright State Raiders(where the heck is Wright State?). Feel free to ask me any Steelers-related question. I'm over it. Really.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Another question about the Steelers
Why is their fight song so lame:
Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Steelers, cross that goal
Pittsburgh Steelers, like free wheelers, ROLL, ROLL, ROLL
Bring us victory and joy will be supreme
And win more fame with ev’ry game
You Pittsburgh Steelers team.
Go, Go, Go * Show ’em how a team can fight
Go, Go, Go * Fight with all your might
Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Steelers, cross that goal
Pittsburgh Steelers, like free wheelers, ROLL, ROLL, ROLL
Bring us victory and joy will be supreme
And win more fame with ev’ry game
You Pittsburgh Steelers team.

Why do people even waste their time
If I wanted to waste an hour of my life, I could respond intelligently, debunking many of his claims (which I didn’t entirely read because even that was a waste of my time), and then have to spend the better part of the next 2 days “debating” with people who root for a team that is 1-15 against said QB.
People need to understand that other teams’ fans hate Manning because he’s the best to play the game. Irrational hate comes in all forms, and people will find every little thing to criticize him on, because there really isn’t all that much.
Creator and developer of the Winning Stats.
I checked out the replies when BBS said he posted Peyton and Brady's playoff QB ratings
when the closest thing to addressing the argument was “Brady wins more” I re-gave up on that site.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
by shake n bake on Mar 9, 2010 10:59 PM EST up reply actions
Right
QB Rating – Asinine
Team Wins – Legitimate and 1/3 of his whole argument.
I skimmed a little more, and he just glosses over the whole “bad defense” thing by just using yards and points.
He also fails to mention that in more than half the losses, the Colts were the lower seed, meaning the team they were playing was nominally better, based on the season.
When Jimmy from MCM said he really hoped the Colts destroyed the Texans before both games, you know how bad those fans are.
Creator and developer of the Winning Stats.
I really would be very happy
if you just destroyed that whole argument. I mean, they would just write it off, but it would bring me joy!
Our heads may be bloody, but they are unbowed. We will be back next year better than ever!
Not even remotely interested
They all have their “opinion” that will never be changed, so it isn’t worth the time or effort.
Like I said, I’d have to thoroughly read the whole thing first, which I don’t want to do either. When he brings up college, he really is stretching.
Creator and developer of the Winning Stats.
He also kills his whole argument
when he brings up how Manning didn’t play well in 2006, yet the Colts still won.
You mean other players can win/lose games for the Colts?? I thought you just debunked that by going game-by-game and showing how Manning could/should be blamed for every loss.
Creator and developer of the Winning Stats.
Texans fans
are like a cancer…I eagerly await the day when the NFL decides to pull the plug on that team. In 8 years of existence they have one, ONE winning season. That is a waste of money for the NFL…bring on the next team. Perhaps they will have more luck?
Our heads may be bloody, but they are unbowed. We will be back next year better than ever!
Winning doesn't necessarily bring in money though.
I’m sure there are losing teams that generate high revenue and winning teams that lose money (or don’t make as much).
Too lazy to check but maybe I’ll do it tomorrow.

Wright State fans brought in their douchiness and stunk up the student section. It will take a while to clean it off. At least they can go back to their trailers in pain now. I enjoyed that they all came on fan buses so they couldn’t leave early. Watching Wright State fans suffer is fun.

He would at best make marginal sense as a kick/punt returner. But that's a thin job for him
Plus, he’d be expensive for that; Indy can find a return guy in the draft somewhere.
I don’t think Indy would offer it and I don’t think he’d accept it if they did. And I wouldn’t blame either side; he just wouldn’t be a proper fit here.

IU alumnus and employee here, so he's hometown to me in a sense
I liked the guy too. Anyone who was able to look that good on IU’s offense back then had something. And his stint with the Steelers showed that he did.
I just don’t see the fit with Indy. He’d never consent to be just a special teamer and a deep reserve receiver. Although, come to think of it, he could have functioned as an emergency quarterback. But still… not enough reason for Indy to go after him with any real seriousness, and not enough openings and PT for him to seriously consider Indy.
Baltimore I could see. Cam Cameron’s their OC, and he was Randle El’s head coach in Bloomington. But not Indy.

yeah, their numbers are always goofy because it's real money
so signing bonus goes all in the 1st year, when everyone is use to seeing it spread over the life of the contract because that’s how the cap hit works, even though the real money is all upfront.

Which is embarrasing, given that I’m an IU guy, and he played for a Big 10 school. But, I can’t erase past ignorance, I can only offset it by learning today and tomorrow; I’ll read up on him later. In the meanwhile, Pouncey – despite the Nancy sounding name – looks like a terrific option. Athletic and smart and motivated. That would be a damn good Colts lineman.

Not a fan of DT in the first (and Price is off the board).
Brown is the only one remaining of the top 6 OTs (Seattle traded for Cards pick to take Campbell, who I didn’t really want anyway).
Griffen (who I’m not a fan of) and McCourty are still available. Or I could try to trade down – but everybody wants to trade down.

Come draft day, I’m never ruling out or assuring anything. Anything can happen and trades can never be predicted and most often screw up everything.

Dallas took Price
The list has not been updated with the latest pick (you can see it in the last post of the thread, though).
Which picks is it that you disagree with?
I don’t see mock drafts as imitations of what happens come draft day. We simply don’t know. To think that we as fans know better than professional GMs throughout the league or even know what they will do is naive. Then we would not be doing whatever we do.
Mock drafts are only a way to pass time and get to know the prospects.

bad pick, Price was born to play in a 4-3
3-4 DEs eat blocks, Price is a gap shooter.

But also to be NT.

NT lol
I mean, they make it work with Ratliff at the nose, but shit, with Price they might be better off running a 4-3. Ratliff at the 1 tech, backed up by Igor, Price at the 3 with Spears. Ware and Spencer on the ends. James, old man Brooking and Carpenter at LB.

It is confusing
The armchair GM is half Cowboys fan, he should know.
He gives overall depth on the DL as th reason.

best case it's a waste of his greatest talent

Funny you should put it that way
Premise, I mean.
Or are we falling for the "getting bigger" premise?
Because even though I have no evidence to support my belief, I happen to agree with you: I think the whole “getting bigger” is a partial bluff, partial smokescreen. Of course going for a larger guy is a good thing to do if he also fits your other criteria and is available. But people are reading into that premise that Indy is going to change their evaluation criteria and place so more emphasis on getting larger that they’ll devalue other criteria as an offset. And I fear that’s a misreading of the intent; I sincerely doubt that the front office would actually work things out that way. For one, the draft isn’t some videogame points-for-equipment system where you have to make such trade offs. You can hope to get bigger and still select the same old-same-old without violating the principle you announced on the grounds that you’re fulfilling other criteria. In other words, I don’t see the “going bigger” intent as the absolute trump criteria here. Because this goes back to the question of how they prioritize criteria in their evaluations: A big guy is a plus, but size is only one variable in the equation. A big guy with no lateral ability, for example, is a liability on this squad.
Two: There’s little sense in dropping lower whichever characteristics that have served well in the past. What was used to evaluate Jeff Saturday? Scott back when he was here? Lilja or Diem when they were still considered part of one of the best lines in football (‘04 through ’07ish, I think?). The failure is recent, and can be attributed to simply being a less than stellar draft. If they identify someone they feel fits the “Colts mould”, they’ll take him, unless he’s so undersized that he’s unusable.
Three: I hold a belief that this is also partially information warfare. All teams bluff on who they want to some degree. So they’ll send out signals regarding their intent, and some of those will be disinformation. Is this one of those examples? Well, that’s the beauty of it: It could be so in multiple directions, as well as being distortive by telling the truth. It could function at face value and tell the world that Indy’s going after size, and then that’s what Indy ends up doing. Or, it could fool people into thinking Indy will pick size when in reality they have other criteria. Or, Indy could get lucky, have a large guy fall to them, and let people think the presumption is validated when in fact, it was other criterial that they were impressed with, causing other teams to misidentify later picks. It’s terrific disinformation because it has multiple possible ways to distort, all of them feeling like they flow logically from the stance.
Anyway, my point is that I, too, see the whole “getting bigger” claim as something other than its face value meaning. I think there’s some gamesmanship here.

"It's the greatest job in the world until Peyton comes off the field and you think his thumb might be broken and there's three minutes left in the AFC Championship Game and you're down by three to New England and you haven't taken a snap all year. he's won't be able to play LT right away, if ever.
maybe I’d put him as high as 19, but no way any higher.

Browns exploring trades of Brady Quinn
wow huh? They want to roll with Senneca or some FA like Delhomme? #7 isn’t high enough for Bradford or Clausen.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Myabe they are thinking of trading up.
They could also like a couple of the other QB’s in the draft.
I guess they could have their choice of the 2nd tier QBs at #38

and he’ll be a mid round pick anyway because he’s big and strong armed.

remember the draft days when Quinn was a no-brainer franchise quarterback?
Good times, good times.

by Marked Hoosier on Mar 10, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions
My favorite part is
when the Browns passed on him around #7, and every pick afterward, they showed him agonizing in the waiting room in New York. And then Quinn demanded top 10 money even though the Browns drafted him near the end of the 1st round.
Good times….
I like the way you remember things...
:D
Go Colts!
by Marked Hoosier on Mar 10, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions
You misremembered a few things
Browns had the #3 pick, and took Joe Thomas. I don’t think they got that wrong.
The Dolphins were at pick #9, and Cam Cameron running the show, and they drafted the entire Ginn family instead of Quinn. Their fans were super excited.
“End of the first round” is a stretch, as he was taken at #22. Still 1/3 of the picks to go. His contract was filled with incentives for playing time, which is why he didn’t play this year. Not because he was the 2nd best QB, but because the owner/GM knew they (the Browns) were awful, so no sense paying extra money. Heaven forbid they actually let the guy play QB without the fear of a change by a shit-for-brains head coach x2.

What part did I misremember?
I consider the #3 pick close to #7 (I said around because I am too lazy to look it up), and I consider everything after pick #20 near the end of the round. I’m not sure what that last part has to do with anything I said.
They started showing him
after every pick after the Dolphins passed on him, not the Browns.
And I said “End of the round” is a stretch, not that you were wrong. Second half of the 1st round would have been better.
Creator and developer of the Winning Stats.
And you mentioned his contract
which is where the last part came from.
Creator and developer of the Winning Stats.
The holdout was dumb
I agree with that. He ended up getting a contract that paid him like the #22 player in the draft, unless he played like a top 10 pick.
The Browns didn’t give him a chance until all hope was lost in his 3rd year, so he was paid like the #22 player.
Creator and developer of the Winning Stats.
Drew Brees was awesome his first 4 years too
and he had Tomlinson on his team.
Between having shit-for-brains as his head coach, and no supporting cast around him other than a KR/PR and a LT, he still hasn’t played more than 4 games in a row. How the hell are you supposed to judge him?
Oh, I know why…

Sad
As I read the article I was buying into the possibility that he had reformed himself, until they mentioned his divorce. I agree with the scout who questioned his ability to have positive relationships. I would bet the Colts don’t touch him with a 10-foot pole.
