Colts Homer's Awesome 7 Round Mock Draft

Mock drafts are what make the world go 'round.  It's a fact.  This is my first 7 round mock draft.  It took a hell of a long time, but I'm finally done, and I've got to say that it turned out pretty well.  I love the Colts draft even if one pick is very unlikely.  The Colts got a guard who will be a starter from day one and the eventual replacement for Jeff Saturday, an improved version of Raheem Brock, a corner who I believe would go in the first round in almost any other draft, a solid pass rushing defensive end, a solid blocking tight end, a kicker who can make it from a mile away, and an unbelievable returner.

Sorry

Amari Spievey is going in the 1st round?

I think he meant in any other year.

It’s a really deep corner class this year.

I would do flips if the draft turned out

this way. It pretty much covers every need out there.

Heh... I was thinking Kyle Calloway in the 4th round myself

And I was wondering if Te’o-Nesheim would be a fit too. Funny coincidence, that.

Sorry, the O-line picks do not cut it

When most Colts fans know that we need the LT kind pick in a first round, getting Maurkice Pouncey just does not cut it. A 1st round pick needs to contribute as quickly as possible, if not in year 1 at least in year 2 completely, if it is on the O-line. If you want Maurkice Pouncey only when Saturday hangs it up (a big uncertainty still), why not get Matt Tennant from Boston College a round later. If you want to move Maurkice Pouncey to guard now, someone that weighs 305 lbs, it goes against the very grain preached and executed by the Colts management, wanting to get bigger at the guard position which is the very reason to get rid of Lilja. Total contradiction. For anyone that has high hopes on the Pouncey pick, I would suggest to temper it down if you give it some thought along the lines of what I just said since Pouncey cannot play tackle at either end and nor is he as big as the new O-line coach wants for guard play based on the moves that have already been made.

Kyle Calloway is a RT candidate who can be in line to replace Ryan Diem, I can see that happening with a later round pick.

The best part about this draft is the DE picks – Wootton and Teo’Nesheim but then, the Pats with 3 second round picks, if they do not get a pass rusher in round 1, one of the above two is going to the Pats. Teo’Nesheim is going up draft boards like crazy and a lot on the DE pick front is going to depend on how much Polian expects the CFL defensive MVP John Chick to contribute in the rotation behind Freeney and Mathis.

Just my two cents :-).

I do not believe the Colts are trying to get bigger

I think they are trying to get better and that Lilja was a sad cut. Pouncey would be starting from day one and would be pretty effective. He’s so athletic and good at pass blocking. Maybe I just think that because I hate the thought of destroying the talent on the O-line to get fatasses in there to make the pass blocking even worse.

Pouncey is 18lbs heavier than Lilja...

I am just a bit leery after the Mike Pollak experiment

That was the last time we moved a top rated center in the draft to play guard and he lost his starting job to an UDFA. I hope Pouncey is not the same case. Not sure if Polian is going to be gun shy about pulling the trigger in the same direction a second time, investing the first pick of a draft (though Pollak was a 2nd round pick) on a top rated center to play guard in our O-line. All these moves do make me wonder why we talk like we are giving up on Kyle DeVan.

A couple more things. As much as a lot of fans think CJ is better suited to guard, he played outstanding at RT when replacing Ryan Diem in the SB we won and he has exceeded expectations at LT, to be honest in pass blocking. Maybe his future is at RT to replace Ryan Diem and not to play guard, does anyone else think that?

by chad72 on Apr 11, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Pouncey has a full year of guard experience. Pollak was always a center in college.

Pouncey's also athletic

And good at pass blocking while Pollak was way overdrafted.

Thanks

I did not know that, that is useful to know, makes me feel better about using him as guard.

Shallow draft

Most analysts agree that Pollack was overdrafted due to a shallow draft throughout the O-line.

so cutting a 290lb guard and signing a 310lb one tells you a 305lb one is unacceptable??????

Ok, let us ignore the weight part

OK, let us ignore the weight part. I am just thinking about the russian roulette that might happen with our O-line and we all know the O-line is the sum of the parts more than the parts themselves. Making too many changes to an O-line that had a lead in the 4th qtr. of the SB could be more detrimental than useful to the Colts, IMO. By the time a line up gets some chemistry, we are already changing it left and right, that is my bigger concern. Isn’t that valid?

Lilja's gone

does it matter to continuity whether he’s replaced with a 1st rounder, mid-late rounder or elevated backup?

What about the others?

Do we all think Adam Terry and Andy Alleman are just camp fodder or do they have a possible role in the lineup?

by chad72 on Apr 11, 2010 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

that doesn't connect to continuity, but

Terry’s a swing tackle and Alleman wasn’t thought good enough for a tender by a team that had OL needs.

Let us say Pouncey is guard

So, you are telling me that drafting Pouncey to replace Lilja will keep the final lineup as (from left to right):

CJ, Pouncey, Saturday, DeVan, Diem

and there will be no more changes?

If there are more changes, that is where the continuity part comes in. For the continuity part, I would like CJ, Saturday and Diem to be there at least as a minimum, don’t you think that is important?

by chad72 on Apr 11, 2010 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

unless they can get a young talented OT, yeah.

continuity is something that’s been shown to have benefits, but at a point you have to upgrade.

The Cowboys entering the OT sweepstakes messes a few things

The 6 potential round 1 OT prospects could be (based on this):

Russell Okung
Trent Williams
Bryan Bulaga
Anthony Davis
Charles Brown
Rodger Saffold

Teams needing OT:

Washington Redskins
Oakland Raiders
Buffalo Bills
San Francisco 49ers (need RT the most)
Green Bay Packers
Dallas Cowboys

There are a couple of things here:

If the Redskins get Flozell Adams, since they do not have as many picks in this draft, they might trade down and try to get more picks if they can. Then, if the Buffalo Bills, who are switching to a 3-4 like the Packers did last year, if they go with Dan Williams for their 3-4 NT like the Packers did with B.J.Raji (I think I got the name right), then there is a big chance that either Charles Brown or Rodger Saffold are available to us.

Plus, the Packers may decide to go CB instead of OT as well. So many thinks could happen that would decide our fate in the OT sweepstakes :-). It is going to be one heck of a talented pool to choose from this year.

by chad72 on Apr 11, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

also the Cowboys like fatty OTs so Brown is likely out for them.

Bruce Campbell could be in the first round OT mix, especially for the Raiders, but I’ve heard the Cowboys like him too.

I was talking obviously about...

…teams with OT needs prior to our pick.

The Bills would be slightly reaching with Dan Williams but the 3-4 NT group, there is a dropoff after Dan Williams and Terrence Cody, so teams may want to get their NT first and other needs later (that is what I should have done as Chargers GM, gone Cody first, RB later :-().

Oh well, you find about the depth of these drafts once you do the mock with other GMs.

Camp fodder for Alleman

I’ve heard that he is worse than Pollak which is bad. Terry may make it.

Camp fodder

Back ups at best.

I like your analysis

I might add. There isn’t enough CB’s picked. Think about it, we lost Marlin and Jennings. If you lose a 1st and 2nd round talent you need to replace that kind of talent equally. The NFL has more 4 wide sets and we have only 3 CB’s to speak of. I see us drafting at least 2-3 CB’s.

Oh my God you're a loser

Seriously dude, I’m worried about you. Why on earth was this a good use of your time?

Mock drafts are stupid and pointless.

For going 7 rounds deep in a pointless imaginary draft without any actual expertise?

Maybe not a loser (I’m just pushing his buttons). But definitely in need of a worthwhile hobby.

Mock drafts are stupid and pointless.

by willyduer on Apr 11, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Well the only expertise isn't such.

He has as most people who do 7 rounders so research. If you do a good job then you can have a good idea of what will happen. Yea I guess you could say they are pointless but if you enjoy learning about the prospects then it is’t such a pointless hobby so to speak.

EPIC

Pretty good. I like the Colts picks especially. Cody to the Chargers in the 1st is a little dubious and I might actually flip where Nate Allen and Chad Jones were drafter. I have Jones rated much higher.

btw- Ryan Perriloux to the Raiders cracks me up. The one QB prospect who might be a bigger disaster than JaMarcus Russel. lol leave it to Undead Al.

7-round re-draft

1) Jerry Hughes, DE, TCU
2) Jon Asamoah, OG, Ill.
3) Pat Angerer, LB, Iowa
4) Alterran Verner, CB, UCLA
5) Andrew Tyshovnytsky, OT, Fordham
7) Mike Newton, FS, Buffalo
7) Simoni Lawrence, LB, Minn.
7) Brandon Brinkley, DB, Houston

I'd go this way

1) Rodger Saffold, OT, Indiana
2) Akwasi Owusu Ansah, CB, Indiana College (PA)
3) Daniel Teo’ Nesheim, DE, Washington
4) Alterraun Verner, CB, UCLA
5) Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse
7.1) LeRoy Vann, KR/PR/CB (our much awaited investment in a kick returner)
7.2) A.J.Edds, OLB, Iowa (is not flashy, just sound and that may not excite too many people)
7.3) Nate Byham, TE, Pittsburgh (excellent blocking TE and I expect him to fall because of his speed)

CH - I think you did well.

I know this took a lot of time and patience to go 7 rounds. But you should be proud of yourself for getting it done! Now let’s see how this compares to the actual draft!

I love the 3rd round Tim Tebow pick

i hope he does go to Jacksonville. that might help the sparkle kitties stay in division for another year or two. i’d love to see him get beat twice a year.

If the draft really worked out this way...

I’d have done the following:
1. Pouncey-RG (or even RT) for now, C for the future, just like you said. Given what was available, good pick.
2. Wooton’s fine, but he doesn’t look like much of an NFL pass rusher to me. I think he’s a 34 5 tech, personally. Fine spot for him though. If not him, I might have gone ahead with Daryl Washington because he slipped, or even reached on Spievey or Arenas. But for the purposes of this post, let’s just say I went Washington. That shores up MLB for after Brackett finally gets too old to start (3 years from now, maybe), and gives the Colts an OLB upgrade over Wheeler in the time being. I don’t know if their rotating LB philosophy would allow him to mature with the team long enough to contribute at MLB, but at the very least he’s a good fit at SOLB for his rookie contract.
3. Like Spievey a lot. Like what Perrish Cox brings as a return man/CB even more (character issues be damned). I’d pass up both knowing that Jason Fox would be gone by the end of round 4 (and you doing a 7 rounder gives me clairvoyance). Fox it is. LT problem solved if he’s healthy. If he’s not, oh well. He was just a late 3rd and CJ would be a fine backup.
4. Fine with Calloway here at RT. That gives you three guys who may be able to start on the o-line right away, and if not, have a really good shot of starting there in the next couple years.
5. Syd’Quan Thompson. He’s a little too Tim Jennings-like for me, but he’s the last CB on the board with return capabilities and would be a decent value. Besides, he doesn’t have to be a stud cover guy as the team’s 4th CB.
7. Graham’s good, then Sherrick McManis and John Amaya for more secondary help.

Sorry but be forewarned of pending comment with extreme eyebrow raising...

REALLY?!?!? With a good CB like Kyle Wilson still available at 20 why take Ryan Mathews…. He is not the great of an RB, yeah his stats last year were wow, but come on he played for Fresno State, the defenses weren’t say SEC/BIG XII kinda teams. @ 20th pick it is still a reach for Mathews. then in the second rnd Lamaar Houston (I might regret adding another Longhorn DT to the Texans after the experience we have from Frank Chokem) I see the Chargers making the move for Mathews though 1st rnd.
