The Colts are no longer drafting Zone only Corner Backs

The Colts are no longer interested in zone only corners, if they wanted a zone only corner these guys would still be on the team.

Daymeion Hughes – "Lacks top playing speed, is slow transitioning off the line and struggles in man coverage" He got a lot of playing time his rookie year, but it disappeared when Larry Coyer took over.

Michael Coe - NEGATIVES: "Does not show great downfield speed or a second gear. Marginal closing burst."  Coe got plenty of playing time his rookie year, but that also changed when Larry Coyer took over.

Marling Jackson 4.52 forty time Marling is a great zone CB, but he is too one dimensional for the Coyer version of the Cover-2.  When he was healthy he was still limited to part time duty.  It is reported that he will move to FS for the Eagles, a move that was predicted during the days leading up to his draft in 2005

Once Larry Coyer arrived the slow footed zone only CB’s are an endangered species on the Colts roster.  The CB’s on the roster now all have the speed to play both man and zone.  They all have forty times in the low 4.4’sJackson .

Jacob Lacy - forty time 4.36

Jerraud Powers- forty time 4.39

Kelvin Hayden - forty time 4.36

TJ Rushing - forty time 4.40

Terrail Lambert - forty time 4.37

One exception was Tim Jennings who had the speed to play both man and zone, but they let him go because he just wasn't getting the job done.  That doesn’t change the fact that the remaining CB’s are much faster than the Colts CB’s that have been cut when Larry Coyer took over.

I think Hughes and Coe got the boot or at least disappeared from the field before Coyer arrived

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Just how deeply can your senses be wrong? With some VR goggles, a camera and a touch on the back researchers were able to overcome a person's sense of being inside their own body.

Hughes was cut September 5, 2009 Coyer was here by then.

Coe may have been cut in 08 before Coyer’s arrival, not really sure. The point was that there aren’t any zone only CB’s on the roster since the arrival of Coyer.

Defense is more important than breathing.

but Hughes had fallen out of favor long before then

I think you make good points to support the argument, but Hughes and Coe aren’t among them.

both were injury prone

and never really got a chance. Coe didn’t get any playing time at all at CB. I remember being excited about Hughes, but he just never caught up after his injuries and once Lacey and Powers arrived he didn’t stand a chance.

Mock drafts are stupid and pointless.

Are the Colts looking for more man coverage?

yes. Are they going away from zone and the Tampa 2? Hell no. If your a Colts corner, you still better be a damn good tackler, because simply being a good cover guy isnt enough.

I agree.

I’m saying that zone only guys are gone. Coyer wants more versatility.

good catch

I haven’t heard any reports and he’s not on the roster on Colts.com

I also haven’t seen any Tweets from him regarding signing with any team

How can you not love a team that does this?

4.45 is the best timing this year

I just think the 40 yard dash times were faster a year ago than this year. I feel it is almost unreal that the top timing is only 4.45 this year. There is probably a 0.05 difference that can be taken off the CB timings. It is like someone is given a 4.34 timing and then later they say it is 4.48 or something like that. 4.45 is the best timing this year among cornerbacks.

That is why I feel if Devin McCourty is not there, Saffold, Brown and Hughes are gone, watch out for my sleeper CB pick Kareem Jackson in round 1. :-)

CBs

Agreed. As time has gone on I believe the pick will be a CB. I do not believe McCourty will be available. I really like Jackson there as well or maybe Robinson.

good to know

when i’ve read profiles to CBs that are concidered ‘slow’ i’ve thought hey, maybe a fit for the colts in the later rounds.. looks like not so much now

um

I read profiles “of” CBs… i don’t actually read them “to”… normally don’t worry about fat fingering on blogs.. that just read odd
