Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

After reading that article, I've imagined a pretty much screwed-up scenario in this year's draft. It has Clausen going all the way down the 1st round to our #31 pick. Teams needing starting or future potential QBs would be afraid of drating him. So, if you were Polian, what would you do? Draft a potential superstar QB to learn from Peyton or pass him to get anyone else?

First, I take serious issue

with the implication that UCLA and Cal don’t have academic standards as high as Notre Dame’s. But that’s not the point of this article.

As to the content, I think that if Clausen is there at #31, the Colts HAVE to consider taking him for the value. While I doubt the Colts are really thinking QB in round 1, I have wondered why they seemed to revert back from last year’s decision to carry 3 QBs… not sure Painter is really ready and there didn’t seem to be any real pressure to release Sorgi. Perhaps the Colts are actually eyeing a QB later in the draft, but if Clausen happens to fall….

How can you not love a team that does this?

The Sorgi thing

was most likely about the intersection between injury and cash.

No.

I see no point in taking somebody in the first round who won’t be able to get on the field. Just like BBS’ Sanchez pick last year.

Exactly

Same reason why I REALLY don’t want to see TE picked anywhere in the true first day.

I disagree

Because I think we need a new TE to complement Dallas and perhaps one day replace him. The 2 TE set seemed virtually worthless last year, with the exception of the Baltimore game when Santi exploded.
I don’t have the numbers to back it up (and if anyone knows a good website where I might obtain stats by formation), but I do have the eyeball test and I remember a quote from Manning talking about how the ineffectiveness of the 2TE necessitated a switch to 3WR one game, which proceeded to dominate.

The point is.

You take a QB, who should be a top10 pick at #31, make him learn a year from the best and then trade him for a top 10-15 pick.

by Ty46 on Apr 18, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

You say that like trading somebody away

for a top 10 pick is easy. Also, there would be a reason he slips to #31. I would also prefer to get someone who can help the team now at #31.

This kid went to High School a couple of miles from me........

The truth is, he is a hell of an athlete. It’s also true that he has an arrogance to him. I watched his brother Casey also while he was in high school. Always kind of puzzled he didn’t make it as a pro. Kyle Boller and the Clausen brothers were the best HS OB’s I ever saw. Anyway, when you are a prodigy, who goes to an elitist private high school, I think that breeds arrogance. If he is too arrogant, it will be whipped out of him by the NFL, or he will go the way of Ryan Leif.

The arrogance was already whipped out of him

his first two years at Notre Dame. Or at least, the unfounded arrogance was.

He was pretty cute

back in the day. Have you seen him lately? Let’s just say that he didn’t, um, age well!

That's probably because of the co-caine.

Among other things no doubt.

The only reason I need to hate Jimmy

is that I go to Purdue, and he went to Notre Dame :P

Teams passing up on Clausen are making a mistake

This is a kid who can really play the game, and unlike other guys that are already starters in this league, he can actually come in day one and win.

Matt Ryan is probably the best comparison to this guy in terms of polish/ability. Sure, Clausen’s deep ball isn’t the best, but tell that to Drew Brees….

Point is that this kid is going to get passed up by bigger names like Bradford and McCoy, while neither of those guys is remotely ready to play in a pro offense. In fact, this is a situation where I almost wish the Colts hadn’t drafted Painter last year because this would be a great pick for them this year.

Ultimately, the Colts should take him anyways and trade him down if someone wants him bad enough….more picks. If not, they can always trade Painter away and groom Clausen.

However, reality sets in and the truth is this kid won’t get picked in the first round. The Colts management will draft some schmuck TE that will as usual get hurt and rarely play.

I can't see it happening but.......

If Clausen fell to 31 (never), grooming him under Peyton would be the answer to the worries of replacing him. Problem is, the consensus is that Manning still has 4 -5 years left. Can’t leave a talent like Clausen on the bench for 4 – 5 years.
