Tony Dungy prefers Colt McCoy over Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow
When former-Colts coach Tony Dungy talks, people listen. More than anyone else who currently works or has worked in the NFL, the level of respect that Dungy cares with him is a natural magnet for media to provide him a sounding board for his opinions. Recently, in a video blog entry for All Pro Dad, a group Dungy frequently helps promote better relationships between fathers and their children, our team's former coach discussed the 2010 NFL Draft. In the video post, Dungy's take on the top rated QBs in this draft (Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, Colts McCoy) is quite interesting. Here is the video, via Paul Kuharsky:
Tebow, McCoy, and Bradford. Who Would I draft? from Family First on Vimeo.
In a nutshell, dungy makes it clear that if he were a general manger, he'd take Colt McCoy over Tim Tebow or Sam Bradford. Watch the video to see Dungy's reasons why.

IMO Tebow is a major project
and I’ve never been sold on Bradford, just from the eye test.

As long as Dungy stops making predictions about Colts games...
…I will be fine. He said the Cowboys have no chance against the Saints, the Cowboys one. He said the Colts would beat the Saints handily, the Colts lost. I love and respect him as a human being and the coach who started our winning ways but I would like him to not make blanket predictions in the future, at least regarding Colts games.
As far as the thread topic, I feel Jimmy Clausen is someone who will surprise a lot of people eventually, just call it a gut feeling.
Hey, have you Colts fans heard that both Flozell Adams (OT) and Ken Hamlin (Safety) have been released by the Cowboys. Now Colts fans should really be worried about the Cowboys going after Bethea. Let us hope Polian matches what the Cowboys give Bethea as long as it does not have poison pill clauses. If we do lose Bethea, we might as well go after Gaither with an extra first round pick.

Both Bethea and Bullitt are tendered in the range where I'd be happy if they stayed or went
The Cowboys 1st rounder would seriously up the odds that they got a 1st round caliber lineman, and they could still get a contributor on D, or maybe even an interior lineman like Pouncey after a Tackle at #27. Bullitt is perfect for the role they have him in, he’s a capable starter to step in when Sanders can’t go, but he’s not such a good safety that he’s unhappy or two expensive to for 3rd wheel role.

God help us if we lose both of them.
We may be screwed if we lose both. If Bethea goes, we will absolutely need to use either one of our 1st or our 2nd round pick on an elite Safety. We just won’t get by with Sanders as our only veteran Safety next year. We have not stuffed the run consistently for a long time, and our only saving grace is that our secondary hasn’t given up massive plays, and has been consistently stingy. If we are looking at only having 4 players in the secondary with starting experience, I suddenly become very very concerned about our defense. We can have the best offense in the world, but if have major issues stopping the run AND stopping the pass, then we are going to need all of Peyton’s Mojo to win as much.
4 picks in the top 64 would be enough to get you a quality starter to pair with Sanders
and address other needs so you can pick up a solid #3 with one of the later picks.

Taylor Mays
We may look at Taylor Mays if we lose Bethea. If we lose Bullitt, then we may look at Darrell Stuckey.
eeww I hope not
Mays’ cover skills are icky

Maybe Nate Allen then
A lot of people rate Nate Allen better than Taylor Mays. I also remember BP attending a South Florida bowl game, so maybe there is something to it.
I think Mays could be a good WILL for Indy down the road
but a conversion project at a non-premium position isn’t going early

Absolutely right observation...
That was why i already had a bad feeling when Coach Dungy opened his mouth and said the COLTS would win – a jinx! I really do hope he can do analysis only and no predictions especially for the COLTS!
Oops type
I meant to say the Cowboys won and not Cowboys one :-)
I think Dungy said it best...
Tebow has to have the team built around him. I just don’t think he will take snaps from center, he will take them 95% of the time from the shotgun, so he is going to need a monster O-line, and atleast 1 quality blocking back, as well as competent receivers. Otherwise he is going to be on his ass as more than Rodgers was this past year.
Bradford reminds me of Sanchez in a way. Sanchez always had major question marks, but had the potential to be good with a good supporting cast. I think so long as the Rams don’t put Bradford in too much of a risky position, and can find some diamonds in the rough in the next couple of drafts, Bradford may be good, but if he plays with the Rams of last year, he is going to be another Stafford. A definate upgrade over what they have, but not the game changer they hope for.
McCoy I could see becoming a type of Brady. Drafted later (not necessiarily in the 6th, but not in the first) in the draft, and allowed to develop behind a veteran QB, or even if he starts, atleast has an average to good quality QB to learn from, but is on a good enough team (like say 49er’s-Bronco’s level), that he won’t be totally destroyed every snap, and has enough skill around him to make up what he may or may not lack in skill. I think that under those circumstances, McCoy could put up bigger numbers than a QB on a less talented team, like Bradford with the Rams. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Tebow be backup on the Jags, Bradford does good but not great on the Rams (~2500 yds, 21 TDs, and 15 INTs), and then McCoy does better than expected, and best of rookie QBs (~2800 yds, 25 TDs, 13 INTS) being drafted in the second round by either the 49ers, Dolphins, Seahawks or maybe even the Falcons.
One thing I have been wondering though, Tebow would be the perfect wildcat QB on the Dolphins. I can see them possibly jumping the Jags in maybe the 2nd or 3rd round helping to stabalize the QB and wildcat formation in Miami. Not sure how likely they would be to get yet another QB, but I think Miami has the best system fit for Tebow.
honest question
If you work from the shotgun, doesn’t that actually give you a teeny bit more time, so your O-Line doesn’t have to be “monster” sized? Seems like they have to be over-sized to give you time to do the drop-back.
How can you not love a team that does this?
Maybe to save his own ass...
But as the QB moves back out from center a good O-line wraps around the QB forming the pocket. If the QB starts right from the shotgun, the O-line has to open up more to form a big enough pocket to protect the QB, but that only opens up holes in the line for LBs to blitz. When a QB starts 5 yds back its alot easier to sprint around the O-line to get to the QB, instead of having to go through it. That would be my reasoning for requiring a big O-line. You need to have big skilled linemen to help protect a much bigger area attacks on the QB can come from.
More run plays could go for losses
If you run shotgun, most of your run plays will be draw plays making it easier for good LBs to see it and sniff it out better, IMO thus making the play action not as effective if it is done all the time. That could also lead to a lot of negative yardage plays as well.
Shotgun or not, Tebow’s slow release and long winding motion is what makes it harder for him to line up behind center and the big O-line is needed to give him more time because of his releasing motion. If he did not wind it up like Byron Leftwich, which is what his throwing motion is like, then he could get away with a smaller O-line
Brees and Brady run shotgun a lot
Brees and Brady release the ball much quicker, and that makes it easier on the O-line even if Brees and Brady line up shotgun more often. The quick release is everything when it comes to completions.
Notice Peyton
takes snaps from shotgun when its 3rd and long or if the opposition’s defense is getting some added pressure.

That should have read:
Peyton only takes snaps from 2nd or 3rd and long and with extra pressure from the D. Taking snaps from shotgun has two downsides: the defense knows it’s more than likely the play will be a passing play and the chances of a botched snap increase.

they'd have needed to gave given up on Pat White already though which doesn't seem likely with them having spent a 2nd rounder on him.

Pat White has a very distinct chance of being cut this off season
At most, he’s worth a 6th rnder in a trade. Thigpen, and Pennington are infinitely ahead of him. 4 qbs are way too many on a roster.

I think Phins will pass on Tebow, no question
We tried that with Pat White, and uh… It flat out sucked. Besides, alot of people don’t quite realize it, but Chad Henne is a damn good quarterback, and with a legit receiving threat, he’s gonna start putting up some major stats in the future. Defense and the lack of a #1 WR are what’s holding the team back. And there would, quite literally, be some rioting if Tebow was anything but a 6th rndr on the Phins. And plus, the Wildcat is starting to die out, ala Henne.

I still believe that Bradford is the man.
The injury was the scare, but he blew everyone away at his pro day, if anyone here followed that. The general word from many people is that there has never been a better pro day workout at QB than Bradford’s. He bulked up, made great throws every time, and did so from every scenario presented.
I liked him that much last year. Injury was the only reason to question him. He has alleviated a lot of those concerns, and I expect him to be great in the NFL.
I completely agree.
Watching Bradford in 2008 reminded me of watching Peyton while he was at Tennessee.
You know I love Dungy, but there was a reason that Polian was/is the GM. I think McCoy will have a legitimate shot, but I also think he’ll be more of a Drew Brees…it may take some time before he develops into a franchise QB.

One thing:
Bradford is way more mobile than Peyton has ever been.

You are right. The first thing I thought when I saw this is that Dungy is a great coach, but he isn’t a GM. I would buy into McCoy as tops if Polian said so, but not Dungy. Polian drafted us Manning. I trust his judgements. They are proven.
While I love Dungy’s coaching and people skills and his faith, I haven’t been overly impressed with his broadcasting predictions so far. I do enjoy his in game explanations at half time, however.
I bet Polian would go Bradford, but who knows.

Colts draft interest
Add this WR Andre Roberts of Citadel (look at point No.7) to the list of WRs Colts are interested in for the later rounds (they have looked at several this year for the KR aspect, I think).
