Five Things I Think I Know: NFL Draft Day One Edition

Stay connected for news and updates

Its baaaaaaack. Did you miss it? Come on, you know you did. You guys were drained from not getting your daily fix of metal's five thoughts from the day that was. Well its back for the draft and i got me a whole slew of things to talk about from that day that was. Without further ado:

1.) I think the selection of Hughes was a smart one. The pick was not only great from a talent and need standpoint, but was smart because the Colts did not reach for a need at offensive tackle. Would I have been pissed if the Colts took either Saffold or Brown over Hughes? Not really, but I would have been a little annoyed as I felt they did not warrant a 1st round pick. Hughes was the player we needed with the talent to match, validating his selection in the first. Once more, bravo, Bill.

2.) I think the Cols are in a good situation in the second round. With players like Clausen falling and a couple of other players who were projected to go in the first, a great defensive player or a linemen should fall to the horseshoe. They have the choice of either standing pat or trading up. Bear in mind that even though the 2nd round is still somewhat a high pick, it wont be as costly trading up as it would in the first. So either way, the Colts are in a good situation as the second day of the draft starts.

3.) I think the Chargers got totally fleeced when they traded up for Ryan Matthews. What was AJ Smith thinking? A 2nd round pick, 4th round pick, and Tim Dobins for a running back? that is way too much for a player that wasnt going to be taken until around 20 when the Texans were picking. Not that im pissed about this or anything since I love watching the Chargers fail, but this move was just awful.

4.) I think the team that one-up'ed them, is the Jaguars. Tyson Alualu? Really? At 10? Look I really liked the guy coming out of college. I even did a draft profile on him cause i thought highly of him. But I didnt proclaim him as a top 10 talent. Is he a disruptive, high motor, and great character player? Yes, yes, and yes. Is he a dynamic playmaker, who can single handedly take over a game like Suh or McCoy? NO! Terrible, terrible pick by the sparkle kitties.

5.) I think the new draft format is great... thus far. This was by far the fastest first round ive ever watch or at least it sure felt like it. There were plenty of trades and a lot of intriguing picks. Maybe it was because of the depth of this draft, but regardless, the first day was a thrill., Here is hoping the second and third days are just as exciting. I was kind of against the new format, now if this type of level of excitement persists, I will embrace the change.

Fire away folks!
