Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

With the 94th pick of the Draft the Indianapolis Colts select: Kevin Thomas, CB, USC

Passing on Charles Brown for Pat Angerer stirred controversy, will the Colts grab a 3rd round tackle with Bruce Campbell, Jason Fox and Kyle Calloway available? Address CB depth and the hole at returner while locking up the hands down best named draft class in the league with the selection of Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (meaning born on Sunday)? Finish filling Brock's shoes with Corey Wootton?

The pick?

Kevin Thomas, CB, USC

A surprise pick, the Colts grab a Southern Cal talent, but not one we expected. Thomas is a CB well suited with zone, but has man experience and good speed. Mixed reviews in run support adding another parallel to the surprise CB in this spot last year, Jerraud Powers.

Thomas bolsters the Colts seriously lacking CB depth. They currently have just 3 corners on the roster who have seen significant NFL action.

I like it.

Back in February when I learned about our defensive failure in the Super Bowl, my quick response was to go all defense in the draft.

Caz Piurowski, TE/OT – Height: 6-7 | Weight: 272

This guy will be a UFA, and the steal of the draft. Hopefully he is on Bill’s radar.

by MadStork on Apr 23, 2010 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

We have to say that...

all the stuff Polian yelled about the OL after February was all smoke screen. He was really mad at the D in the second half.

We might also think that he was blowing smoke when he said the OL wasn’t as deep in this draft.

by emiller17 on Apr 23, 2010 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think it was a smoke screen, but

the quality of tackle at our picks I don’t think Bill liked well enough and went a different route. Will probably still pick up OL early tomorrow.

Or it might have been the initial reaction

that was then revised. It was smoke anyway. Our oline is average, but that wasn’t why we lost AT all.

Agreed...

I just think everyone jumped on that statement. I think D depth is more important at this point. We have shown that we don’t NEED to run to win. D depth will help more directly. Especially with the injury bug we can’t seem to shake.

I am happy with the picks...

all the positions are positions I felt we needed help and depth. It’s nice to see that happen. I still think we have a shot at a left tackle probably Calloway or Fox, so there is still a chance, but overall I am happy the way the draft is going.

I never saw what was great about Sorgi.

He always struggled to get yards and even when he did he couldn’t finish drives. I just think that Painter will get better and be exactly what we need from a clipboard carrier. Hopefully his non-throwing arm is strong enough to not develop any strain from holding it for the next 5 or 6 years.

That would make sense why he could never get the ball anywhere.

If you lack accuracy or power you won’t be a good QB. Sorgi had accuracy then, but lacked power. Painter has bits of both. I just think he could be a good backup (atleast for our needs) until we start grooming our Manning Jr.

Honestly, Peyton should just get on with having kids so we can start grooming them at the Colts Complex. Honestly, let him have a little girl first so the first woman in the NFL will be Manning reincarnated.

I think going into this draft, if i had to pick where we needed depth the most, it was at DE and we addressed that, and right behind that LB. We did that as well with a solid pick. The kid (angerer) is going to be good for us for a while, mark my words.

To be honest aside from Angerer alot of people expected the positions we took, just not the player. We got a DE in the first (then we thought an OT in the second), but we were thinking a CB in the third. we need an OT eventually and it really is just about the time that we either get a O-linemen with potential, or we take a hit in the dark on a guy not expected to amount to anything.

Welp......

I can’t help but shake my head in confusion at what’s gone on. I’ve never seen us draft two more random players. I know we don’t draft for need, but when two needs are adamently addressed by your tm pres (o-line and return specialist), then why the hell are we drafting backups? Can we not get those guys in the fourth and on? I won’t bash on Angerer. He’s not terrible or anything, but he won’t see the field significantly for a while. Maybe he’ll surprise and beat out Wheeler, but I doubt it. And then there is Kevin Thomas, whoever that is. A DB that can’t return. He won’t play in front of Hayden, Powers, or Lacey. So while we are supposedly lacking at OL and ST, we ignore both needs for two reaches. Letting the Saints have Brown is so ironic, my head hurts thinking about it. Then we pass on Bruce Campbell, another solid OT, for what I think will be another guy who was babied by Pete Carroll and not amount to much more than a backup.

I mean, I know defense is a need, as we got stomped in the SB by the Saints O, but I’m starting to wonder about Polian’s o-line comments. It looks like we don’t like any linemen at all, so are we gonna go out and sign Flozell or something? I really have no clue what Polian is doing right now. Not saying he is wrong, but don’t understand this strategy at all after his post-SB comments.

"A lot of times, Kenny, we have no idea what we're doing. But the DEFENSE doesn't know that we don't know what we're doing.....and that's next level." -Peyton Manning

I guess Polian just didn't value AOA as highly as we did.

He obviously saw more potential or use from Thomas than he did from AOA. Polian ususally does well with these kinds of things, but I still wish we could get a guy known to be a return guy too. Look at Harvin… Just because he was known just as much a return man as he was as a WR doesn’t mean he wasn’t any good. I think a serious return guy can help solve a number of our blocking problems.

Well you can count me in as one of the few people who are loving the Colts draft this year.

I’ve come to the realization that the Colts can win with an average or below average offensive line. As long as Peyton is back there directing the offense it will score points. However what has often more than not killed the Colts postseason hopes is the defense falling apart later in the year.

/would still like to see an OL or two somewhere down the road though.

It’ll come. Think about it, almost all of our best O-line are late round picks or UDFA’s. And Polian’s scouts told him this wasn’t a deep O-line draft, which means you don’t get value until late.

Obviously every GM in the league agreed with me, although had it not been for his attitude and his neck injury, he’d probably have gone in the top of the second….

Still, I felt the whole OT value was over-estimated due to demand.

You know, while I said in that other thread that I ended up waffling on Brown as a first round talent

… I still think he’d be an improvement over Charlie Johnson. What I saw in video makes me believe this. Whether that means he’s a first round talent or not was up to debate before the draft, so from us armchair and couchbound scouts, it was a legitimate debate and possibility. But I don’t think it was really a way-out judgement; we don’t have access to the totality of the films, plus don’t have the experience at analyzing that team scouts have.

From our point of view, he had the tools to handle edge rushers. Well, we were wrong in our ranking of him (although I still stick by the analysis i.e. that he can handle protecting the edge pass rush), but I personally needed a bit more than assertions about what people believed before changing my mind. Not knocking your analysis, BTW; rather, what I’m saying is that I would’ve liked to have read more “Here’s why he’s not worth a first round pick” instead of “Guys, I say he’s not worth a first round pick”.

I was going to say. This was 2 draft threads ago.

Phil B reported that GMs were expressing concerns over his work ethic, and that coupled with a neck injury he had taken a major hit. Besides, what else do you think could have made him go from being a solid first round we were hoping would fall to us in the first, to a toxic asset that would could get in the 2nd just as easily.

by Jamkel on Apr 23, 2010 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

This is the first I heard of a neck injury.

I was basing my assumptions on watching him during the season and said the other day I thought he was inconsistent and lazy.

Back when I was picking beans in Guatemala, we used to make fresh coffee, right off the trees I mean. That was good. This is shit but, hey, I'm in a police station.

by TouchdownColts on Apr 23, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Likewise, that has been going around since about the 10th pick of the 2nd.

NFLN reported that the reason so many OTs were being taken over Brown, even though he was supposed to be amazing was because he suffered a neck injury post combine. Then Phil B reported that GMs didn’t like him because he had an attitude problem and there were concerns over his work ethic. Thats kind of what I thought was going on by that point as well. For how highly rated he was, he really had to piss off alot of GMs to make everyone ignore his stats. There were a lot of “Stat focused” GMs who were taking a pass on him.

Next Man Up!

I think the philosophy behind the Colts’ picks so far is that our starting 22 can consistently beat anybody, and that our chief vulnerability is when they got hurt. Look at how our last three seasons ended with the defense getting shredded due to a weakness created by injuries to Freeney or Brackett. Would have been real nice having Angerer against the Chargers last year to replace Brackett, or Hughes filling in for Freeney the other two.

Looking at next season’s roster, there were five guys whose back-ups would fall far short – Manning, Freeney, Brackett, Powers/Hayden, and Clark. We just drafted guys who remind scouts of three of those guys.

That thread reminded me I need more ballwashers

It would save a lot of time in my day. Sign-ups start now. Don’t all respond at once.

Welcome to the Colts, Jerry Hughes!

Hello all

Just got back from the game, and I see a new LB and DB. Cool.

It seems a little disingenuous to say that Polian is good at drafting DBs in the draft

I’m not making a judgment on the pick one way or the other, I’ve never heard of Kevin Thomas, but I assume he’s Dave Thomas’ son. That being said, here’s a look at Bill Polian’s body of work with regards to DBs since 1998:

Jerraud Powers (rnd 3)
Dante Hughes (rnd 3)
Brannon Condren/Safety (rnd 4)
Michael Coe (rnd 5)
Tim Jennings (rnd 2)
Antoine Bethea (rnd 6)
TJ Rushing (rnd 7)
Marlin Jackson (rnd 1)
Kelvin Hayden (rnd 2)
Matt Giordano (rnd 4)
Bob Sanders (rnd 2)
Jason David (rnd 4)
Von Hutchins (rnd 6)
Mike Doss (rnd 2)
Donald Strickland (rnd 3)
Joseph Jefferson (rnd 3)
James Lewis (rnd 6)
Idrees Bashir (rnd 2)
Cory Bird (rnd 3)
Raymond Wells (rnd 5)
Jason Doering (rnd 6)
David Macklin (rnd 3)
Rodregis Brooks (rnd 7)
Paul Miranda (rnd 4)
Corey Gaines (rnd 7)

If I missed someone, I’m sorry, it wasn’t my intent.

That’s 25 players drafted. 5 of them remain on the roster.

OK, I understand, rounds 4-7 are REALLY hit or miss. I agree.

Polian took 11 DBs in rounds 1-3. 3 of them have stuck.

Polian has taken 6 of those DBs in rounds 1 and 2. A total of 2 of them have stuck.

Through any measuring stuck, he’s batting somewhere between 1/3 and 1/5, which is probably average. I’m sure he picks DBs better than he picks OL, but I would say Polian is to picking DBs what a man whore is to women… Polian hits on a few DBs because he drafts so many, much like a man whore will eventually sleep with a hot woman just due to sheer volume. That doesn’t make them particularly good at it, just persistent.

one addendum:

He seems to be pretty good at picking up UDFA CBs: Bullitt, Harper, Lacey are three that come to mind immediately.

Okay, so after reading through this thread - my thoughts:

Going into the draft, I wanted an O-Lineman, it can obviously be improved BUT many people brought up the great point that we lose games because of DEFENSE! What does that mean to me:

1. I’m even more excited about the Hughes pick.
2. I’m cool with this Thomas pick, really think he can be polished and made to be effective in our system.
3. Still need to learn/read/watch more of Angerer.
4. WE CAN STILL GET O-LINEMAN! – There are 4 rounds left and a bunch of picks. I think this draft is turning out really well for us.

But But Thomas is from USC so he can't be good lol

(ok haven’t heard the argument exactly like that but heard a bit of the crap about USC and how they play as an argument which makes no sense)

He is in the top 2 at CB class atm...

And about 6 teams have CB as a need in the top 10-15 picks of the 4th. We may miss with a few that have other needs, but I doubt that he lasts beyond 20 unless he interviewed quite badly. I honestly wouldn’t mind trading our 4th this year and 3rd next year to trade up to get him at the top of the draft order tomorrow…. (say number 5 or 6 overall in the 4th)

Only Carlos Delgado

and Adam Dunn hit the bridge before IIRC

Davis is going to be soooo good.

Another great part of the game, Chipper made an error and runner scored from 2nd base on it and fans chanted “Larry” for a good…. 15 minutes.
