ESPN's Adam Schefter: "Raiders preparing to cut JaMarcus Russell"

From ESPN's @Adam_Schefter

"RT @TheRedzoneorg: ESPN report: Raiders preparing to cut JaMarcus Russell http://tinyurl.com/26jwy4x"

Anyone think he can put on 25-50 more pounds? I bet he'd be a decent left tackle. Either that or a blocking tight end. Someone have Polian empty out his pockets and throw the Raiders some lint, a button, and a few pennies and see if they take it. My guess? They're happy to get anything at this point.

What a waste

of a draft pick. Im not sure where people got the notion that Russel had a lot of talent in the first place? All he had was a big arm and thats it. He wasnt very athletic, had zero accuracy, and couldn’t read defenses if it was a book for pre schoolers. I knew he was going to bust the moment I saw his game film and the way he talked in front of the cameras. Al Davis is such a tard

Not exactly true

In his final year of College, he had a 67.8% accuracy

So it’s not like he had no accuracy. But his work ethic definitely should have turned people off.

Woah

Let’s not forget just how bad Leaf was. Russell was comically bad in every statistic. Leaf was worse in all of them. It’s a competition, but Leaf’s still ahead on the “biggest bust of all time”.

Well, I’m going to make the case that JaMarcus was the bigger bust ever.

1) He was taken first overall. Leaf was taken 2nd overall. The Raiders had their pick of literally everyone in the college pool that year, and whiffed.
2) Leaf’s contract was 4 yrs, $31.25 mil with an $11.25 mil signing bonus. In 2007 dollars, that’s $39.6 mil and $14.25 mil, or about $6.3 mil a year. Russell’s contract is 6 yrs, $68 mil, $31.25 mil signing bonus, for $6.125 mil a year. The difference here is that even adjusted, over 4 years Russell will have made $55.75 mil, and Leaf would have made $39.45 mil, for a difference of $16.3 mil. Leaf was a head case, but there’s zero way you can convince me or anyone else that JaMarcus Russell was $16.3 million dollars better than Ryan Leaf. He hit the sweet spot of being an exceedingly overrated QB in a draft that was weak in QB talent, going first overall to a team with incompetent management that desperately needed a QB, at the very peak of the rookie salary scale. Having all those things align is impossible. It won’t happen again.
3) Having JaMarcus on the roster kept the Raiders from potentially drafting Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Matt Stafford, and Mark Sanchez. All of those guys seem to be decent QBs, and any one of them would be an upgrade over Russell.

Long story short, I think we have a new “Biggest Bust of All Time”.

We rise. They fall.

Russell

was also in the same draft class as Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson…gotta love Al Davis.

I'll make the case for Leaf

1.) Throw the contract out, since rookie contracts have become ridiculous in the past 5 years.
2.) Sure, Russell went #1 overall, but really no one ever expected him to be great. There were whipers of his bust potential from the start. Pretty much everyone thought Leaf would be a great player, and some legitimately thought he was a better prospect than PEYTON!!!
3.) Leaf’s stats are mind bogglingly bad, like a lot worse than Russell’s. For SD, Leaf was 4-14 as a starter, with a 47.6 cmp%, 13 tds and 33 ints. Russell was 7-18, with a 52.1 cmp%, 18 tds and 23 ints.
4.) The Chargers MOVED UP to pick Leaf, making them lose a 1st round pick the next year, which was used to pick Champ Bailey.

by dmstorm22 on Apr 28, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

BTW

The Chargers gave up 2 first round picks and a second round pick to get Leaf. Plus, Leaf has to deal with having Manning in his draft class. The other big-name QB in Russell’s was Brady Quinn, who isn’t doing much better himself.

See, there are three positions you can take at #1 overall and not be killed for: QB, LT, and DE. So, the Raiders could have had Joe Thomas, who will anchor Cleveland’s line for a decade or more.

Now, because Al Davis is crazy, here’s who he could have also had instead: Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, Darrelle Revis, Patrick Willis, or Jon Beason, So, arguably their pick of two guys that are top 5 players at their position, a shutdown corner that would have made them virtually impossible to pass on, or one of the top 5 best middle linebackers in the game.

Russell was rumored as much as anyone is. No one expected Peyton to be the best ever, but he is. Peyton’s reflected brilliance makes Leaf look worse, but it’s not like the Chargers had a choice. They were taking whoever the Colts didn’t draft.

You can’t disregard the contract. If you disregard the contract, you disregard that Leaf was drafted after Peyton. Also, Leaf’s Chargers teams were worse than Russell’s Raiders teams. The Raiders are a 6-10 win team right now. It’s Russell that’s making them so awful.

We rise. They fall.

Leaf inherited a better team

and had a better defense in SD.

That’s why the Chargers went 8-8 in 1999, where Leaf did not play a single snap. They were 5-11 the year before with Leaf (better than the Raiders in Russell’s first year), and 1-15 the year after with Leaf. They had as much talent as Oakland had.

Also, I can disregard the contract, because even Peyton wasn’t paid as much as Russell as the No. 1 pick. Plus the hype for Leaf was more. Russell was not the best prospect in that draft. Calvin Johnson was. Leaf was arguably the top pick in that draft. Leaf also cost the Chargers two first round picks in the next two years. That is much more costly than Russell.

Also, statistically Leaf is just so awful. 2 tds and 15 ints as a rookie. That’s is worse than Russell, much worse.

also lives in the shadow of Manning…I mean here you have two QBs who totally went in opposite directions…Hollywood couldn’t even make this up.
