BBS' guess at the 2010 Indianapolis Colts 53-man roster

Anything can happen between now and the Week One game at the Houston Texans. Anything. So, this early guess as to the who will be on the 53-man roster will most likely be woefully inaccurate come early September. Even though Pollack has been a bust

I don’t see him getting cut this year, the fact that he was a center makes him pretty valuable. Who knows

See, I still insist that Richard is a great guy to have as the backup center. He did well in the start of his rookie year filling in for Jeff. He didn’t play at all last year but I bet he’s more likely to stay than Pollack or one of a few of those other guys (the other Jaimie, for instance).

I want Tauiliili back so he and Vuna Tuihalamaka can play together.

Day-after draft grades are probably even dumber than mock drafts.

Few changes...

Can’t see us carrying 4 RBs. Baby J misses the cut. Brandon James makes it to split time time with Fisher.

I think Jamie Richard makes the team. Pollack might be given another shot too. Might be at the expense of Jamie Thomas landing on the PS again this year.

I don’t have much faith in Ricardo Matthews. Cut.

…and I’m afraid that I don’t think Mitch King will stick either. Not sure who gets that spot though.

by invisibulman on Apr 29, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

I can’t see Hart and James, both making the team.

Also I don’t remember the Colts ever having 8 LBs.

Also, it’s impossible, that 4, rather SSs make the team, with Bethea again not having a backup.

yeah, that was the biggest thing jumping out at me

Blair White over guns appears to be an upgrade.

However, I see Brandon James making the team to split returns with Fisher. Then, the odd man out is Silva, with either Mike Newton taking a spot or David Caldwell.

Simpson was a cablable backup RB

he had a couple surprisingly good runs in garbage time

Anyone who has a problem with Joseph should stop watching Colts football. It's unfair to expect a back to replace Edge, and Addai has been excellent in all areas when he is healthy.

Except of Tyjuan Hagler in place of David Caldwell. And who knows what will happen with the offensive and defensive line? It’s hard enough to guess year-to-year when they don’t seem so hell-bent on making major changes like they do this season.
And you’re right, there’s no way they leave Blair White on the practice squad for some team to snatch up unless he turns out to be a total dud.

Pretty close to mine

I think they might sign a veteran QB (Marc Bulger…or someone much lower profile). I know the “we’re screwed anyway” philosophy is actually pretty accurate, but Painter is perilously unready.

I think you’re a little LB heavy. I’d like to see our drafted LBs make it along with Hagler. No on Glenn and Humbler. I don’t see it yet with T-Halamaka, but whatever. Most people around here seem to love him.

I’m okay with four RBs, as long as one of them is Brandon James, and he beats out Ray Fisher for a roster spot. I don’t want both, and I want some sort of speed back out of this mix.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they rolled with four WRs to start the year like they did last year.

I’d switch Devan with Richard and add Pollack (not ready to give up on him yet).

I hope one of our new UDFA safeties is better than Silva.

Long way to go yet, though.

And a better starter than Wheeler. My hope is that he can stay healthy by only getting special teams reps and either Wheeler will improve or Angerer can learn the WOLB position, so Hagler won’t have to start.

My attempt

QB – Manning, Painter
RB – Addai, Brown, Hart
WR – Wayne, Garcon, Collie, Gonzalez, Giguere
TE – Clark, Eldridge, Tamme, Snow
OT – C Johnson, Diem, Terry, Linkenbach
OG – DeVan, McClendon, Alleman, J Thomas, Pollak
OC – Saturday, Richard

DE – Freeney, Mathis, Hughes, Mathews
DT – Muir, A Johnson, Foster, Moala
WILL – Session, Conner, Humber
MIKE – Brackett, Angerer
SAM – Wheeler, Glenn, Tuihalamaka
CB – Hayden, Powers, Lacey, K Thomas, Fisher
FS – Bethea, Bullitt, Newton
SS – Sanders, Caldwell

THOUGHTS: Toughest pick was WR5. Competition for WR5 this year is going to be tough. Giguere, Guice, Hall, T Smith, White, Matthews and Sisco all battling for that spot. I had it down to Giguere, Guice and White, but Giguere is the only one I can give an honest NFL opinion about. Wouldn’t rule anyone out though.

This roster is OG and DB heavy and light on DTs, but Mathews @ power DE is essentially a passing down DT anyway so I’m alright with that. Polian said he has special packages in mind for Hughes and Mathews, which suggests to me that both make the final cut. Only three actual TEs might be worrisome, but I don’t know how much longer they can keep Santi given his propensity for getting injured and Robinson on the same roster as Eldridge is entirely redundant.

Would definitely shelve B James, T Hiller, B White, A Tyshonyvsky, B King and either J James or D McClesky on the PS though. Obviously this is really early to project a 53-man roster and just for speculation’s sake.

Some Changes

Fisher is gone. As a Big 10 guy he is not near the returner of Brandon James. Brandon puts baby James on the PS this year. Fisher is replaced by Brandon King who is a much better tackler and played safety as well at Purdue. Also gives them added depth at the safety spot.

I also think Blair White may be the steal of the group. I think he can develop into a decent #2 or #3 option down the road. Sam is off the team.

No way Brandon James doesn't make roster

Only question mark is his size, which we all know is a BS thing to question. Dante Hall, Sproles, etc. are all mini-backs and are dynamic in the return game. James is as well, and has proven as such. He will never be a 15-20 carry back, but he could provide some big time 3rd down sparks for us, ala Kevin Faulk and Sproles. I think we keep 4 RBs on the roster again. The odd man out will be Hart or Javarris James. They are the same type of back (or at least similar), and James (Brandon) separates himself from the two with his return game. It will be Addai (~25 carries), Brown (~15 carries), Hart and Brandon James (who will be third down specialists along with Eldridge). As much as we’d all like to see Baby J make the roster, he doesn’t offer more than Hart and doesn’t offer the same diversity as Brandon James. I’d say it will be between him and Hart, and I think Hart has earned his spot (but you never know, it’s a new season and no one’s job is ever really safe).

I agree about Pollak, but we’ve seen that Polian is not one to give up on a high pick so quickly. Otherwise, Ugoh would have been cut last year.

And adding on to what others have already said

Fisher and Brandon James can easily co-exist in the return game. Fisher can return punts and James kicks.

This is true...

BUT for this to happen, James would still need to prove himself capable at the RB position and Fisher at the CB position. I’m sure I’m not saying anything new there, but Polian wants guys who can hold down their positions well too.

Some of these guesses

Are nuts…

The Colts signed John Chick to a 3 yr deal as a free agent late last season, he will make the roster, as he’s better than any of the guys not named Freeney/Mathis….. I’d be quite shocked if he’s not in uniform…

Bullitt still hasn’t signed his 1 year tender, which means while he’ll most likely be a Colt this year, we still can’t afford to screw around with his position. Not to mention the constantly hurt Sanders, so we need the backups.

Quite frankly, I dont see them carrying less than 4 safeties this year….in fact, with several of the “role players” such as Jennings, Rushing, etc that are gone, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Colts try getting them to play some multiple positions…

Does it happen? Who knows….but I can tell you this…. the Colts will jettison more current roster players…as the new talent is as good or better……and I wouldn’t even be surprised if they tried trading players for a pick or two..

Agree

The Colts will carry four or more safeties, and I’ll go as far as to say none of them will be named Jamie Silva (hence why they’re bring so damn many safeties in to compete this year, Silva is a good special teams guy but just isn’t good at the safety position itself.)

I wouldn’t read too much into Chick. In my mind, he’s like a priority UDFA. I think they like him and want to give him a good shot, but no way he’s a lock if the Colts have indeed designed special packages to utilize Hughes’ speed rush and Mathews’ power DE/inside rusher abilities. Not counting out Chick entirely – obviously they are confident that he’ll have a good showing. But he’s not a lock, and I don’t know how you can necessarily qualify him as “better than” Hughes/Mathews.

by Collin McCollough on Apr 29, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Because

Chick has already proven himself as a commodity at the pro level, even if it is Canadian football. Whereas both Hughes and Matthews still have to show up at the pro level.

And the Colts have to like the guy pretty well to sign him to a 3 yr deal.

For all its worth, Here is my 2 cents....

QB – P. Manning, C. Painter
HB – J. Addai, D. Brown, B. James (RS/RB)
WR1 – R. Wayne
WR2 – A. Collie, A. Gonzalez, P. Garcon
WR3 – B. White, S Giguere
TE – D. Clark, B. Eldridge, T. Santi

LT – C. Johnson, T. Ugoh
LG – J. McClendon, M. Pollak,
C – Jeff Saturday, J. Richards
RG – K. DeVan, A. Alleman
RT – R. Diem, A. Terry, M. Toudouze

LE – R. Mathis, K. Dawson
DT – A. Johnson, D. Muir, F. Moala, E. Foster
RE – D. Freeney, J. Hughes

SLB – P. Wheeler, V. Tuihalamaka
MLB – G. Brackett, P. Angerer
WLB – C. Session, R. Humber

CB1 – K. Haden, J. Powers
CB2 – J. Lacey, K. Thomas, R. Fisher, B. King
SS – B. Sanders, M. Bullitt
FS – A. Bethea, J. Silva, M. Newton

P/KOS – P. McAfee
PK – A. Vinatieri
LS – J. Snow

Anyway, thats just my 2 cents. 53 guys all able to compete for time. I think we carry 6 WRs, because 1 will go down at some point for something (even if its just a week), and I don’t think Caldwell/Polian wants to be stuck needing to resign Baskett to fill out special teams. I also think we carry 6 CBs. 2 are always injured, and we need atleast 4 at any given time, so I would bank on 6 being available at anytime.

wow - no Hart?

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Apr 29, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason I didn't put him in...

Was because our RBs only matter for blocking. Hart is a good player, but to be honest, if there is a position we cut from due to lack of need it would be RB. I think we only keep 3 RBs if one is a dedicated dual specialist. Hart really isn’t a return man, and to be honest we don’t get much total production out of our 3rd/4th RBs, so I’m willing to just say we’ll cope with whatever Brandon James can do (he’s supposed to be a fairly good backup RB, and a great returner).

I think we just need the depth in the secondary and in Linemen more than we need extra pure backup RBs. I think Hart is the first one in, replacing about anyone in the depth chart, but at the very lowest he ends up in the practice squad.

To actually have a backup MIKE this year? Keiaho gave it his best shot, but it wasn’t his natural position. It’s nice to be able to slot that position in case Brackett gets hurt.

For the record, I’m normally a bit on the pessimistic end of the fandom spectrum. But this camp roster is incredible. If there are no significant injuries (can never be assumed, unfortunately), this could rival the 2005 Colts for best Indy-era Colt team honestly. The offense is particularly deep and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Coyer does with a draft class of guys specifically taken with Coyer’s scheme in mind (Hughes, Angerer, Thomas, Mathews. etc.)

Keep a few things in mind though

First off, great post and love the pic of BP on this one lmoa!

When putting together a projected 53 man roster this year it helps to understand the man in charge’s thinking. Given BP’s tempetuous nature, I think it means something when he loses a SB that he believed (me included) the Colts would win. In the aftermath, we all know what happened. He called out the o-line, got rid off Raheem Brock, Ryan Lilja, and released Chad Simpson. Furthermore he elected not to bring back Marlin Jackson, Freddy Keaiho, Tyjuan Hagler T.J Rushing , Jennings and Hank Baskett. What does this mean? He is looking for new role players that can produce in a pinch and help out the game’s greatest qb. I really don’t expect any of these names or others to be back on the roster even if they remain available throughout the year. The point is..those players mentioned are part of the problem not the solution. So, for those of you dreaming of seeing Hagler back on the roster keep dreaming. He has proven that he can’t stay healthy despite flashes of ability. This is why BP drafted 2 lb’s to replace Keaiho and Hagler. He also drafted Brock’s replacement in Mathews. Robinson is a goner thanks to Eldridge and Rushing thanks to Fisher. Notice how the DT and KR/CB are former and present 7th rounders. The only thing about BP is that his 4th rounder McClendon is an enigma and thus a crap shoot. Remember last year – Taylor was the strongest man at the combine and intelligent…now where is he? Also Condren and Gio weren’t invited to the combine in previous years and were 4th round picks but no longer with the Colts. I’m just saying the jury is out before we crown his ass. Finally, White’s best shot is the ps. He is a player and will be good but reminds me of John Standeford. It may take him a yr or 2 before he sticks. Odds are Humber and Glenn are goners too unless they really step up. I really want to see what happens on the oline this year. Anyway, I hope we have atleast 3 return men including Brandon James on the 53 man squad.

So any projection should

What is the most likely starting 5 along your OL for the upcoming season? For the best accuracy, I’d prefer to hear from you guys rather than trust my own opinions or an ESPN depth chart.

Thanks!

by JimmyK on Apr 30, 2010 8:37 AM EDT reply actions

Probably even most of us don't know.

Our O-line isn’t amazing, and aside from Saturday its not like any of the guys are sure fire starters, so the best any of us can do is give you odds on who will start. He is mine.

LT – Charlie Johnson (60:40) over Tony Ugoh
LG – J. McClendon (51:49) over Mike Pollak
C – Jeff Saturday (9999999999999:1) over Jamey Richards
RG – Kyle DeVan (55:45) over Andy Alleman
RT – Ryan Diem (50:45:5) over A. Terry and M. Toudouze

This is ofcourse completely subjective because anyone of these guys could really show up in training camp and get a starting spot (aside for Center). I personally like CJ, McClendon, and DeVan to start, but I’d say each has a backup that matches them in terms of total skill, experience, and ability. CJ and DeVan may be less able than Ugoh and Alleman, but their experience and skill is enough to put them over the top. As for the RT position, I know so little about Terry that I can only give a stat by stat comparison, and it is upon that basis I put Diem and Terry that close. Training Camp will show us more, but ultimately if Caldwell and the line coaches see something in someone, I’m sure they’ll go with someone who’s shown less but could end up putting out more.

If Richards and Pollak are switched...

Then I’m pretty sure that McClendon will get the job. I think Richards did a good job at center when filling in for Saturday, but as I’ve not seen him at a guard spot, I’m not sure how well he’ll do. I think here is the real key to how it all pans out. If our new O-line coach is really serious about upgrading the weight class of the line then I’ve got a feeling McClendon, and Terry get the starts, with Alleman having a good chance as well. If we go with who’s best at protecting Manning’s ass then my guess would be CJ, DeVan, Saturday, McClendon and Diem. It just depends upon philosophy. If we go who is the most capable of protecting Manning then it’ll be one group, if its who is most able to upgrade our line to help us run better then it is a whole other group.
