Crazy idea, but the Colts might want to consider this

As we have often seen, Bob Sanders "Superman" has often met his kryptonite, aka injury. He's one of the hardest hitting players in football and he's for the most part, a real fan favorite. The problem is that when he's not on the field, the Colts are often missing what some call the "nastiness" part of their defense. Just him being on the field makes RB's second guess hitting the second level and his ability to make plays is one reason why he was named 2007 Defensive Player of the Year.

This past year, Bob Sanders barely played in 2 games (thanks for the correction peytonsurdaddy). He was sidelined from shoulder surgery after last year's playoff loss to the Chargers. The Colts defense meanwhile, went on a relative tear and played top 10 football again. Melvin Bullitt had a monster year filling in for Sanders. The Colts defensively still missed that killer instinct that Sanders often brings.

Make Bob Sanders a LB or play him as a 3rd CB/Safety.

Sounds absolutely crazy right? Even I think it does. However, it does make a lot of sense. The Colts practically use him as a 4th LB already in alot of their defensive schemes. When not playing that role, he'll often slide into the "3rd" CB role as Bethea is almost always playing the deep ball on defense.

Now look, I know the guy is 5'9" but he hits like a LB. The Colts want to put him on the field and take advantage of his ability. The fact he gets hurt playing what amounts to a 4th LB role is killing the Colts already anyhow, as it leaves the position he fields with backup players or players playing part time.

Leave Bullitt on the field full time. This gives him the confidence of the team, as well as giving him the chance to shine. Meanwhile, this puts El Senor Hit Stick on the field with only 1 mission in life, kill whoever has the ball.

Look, Sanders has the speed to play coverage. The Colts while playing more man to man, still play a relative zone oriented defense. It's not a bad idea if you think outside the box.

Do I think this will or could happen? Not a chance.....but I think its definitely something I would think of if I was Coyer....
