After reading Bamock's great article disecting the camp battle between Brandon King and Thad Turner, I decided to do a little more research on Turner.
. As noted on Bamock's blog, Turners measurable's are about what you would expect from a corner, as he weighs in at 188 pounds, 5-foot 11-inches, and timed in a 4.51, 40 yard dash. Pretty decent measurable's. Based on the video provided, it seems as though Turner has a reputation as being a big hitter and so support in the run game is not that big of an issue. However, after scouring through the youtube archives, I found a video that really didnt sit well with me in regards to Turners coverage skills.
By watching his first part of this video, where Turner lines up in press man coverage against receivers, you will notice a disturbing trend. He always extends an arm out and grabs a players jersey. In the NFL, that is a big no-no not only because it will draw a PI call, but also because that PI call isn't college style. if you interfere with a guy way down the field, thats where the ball will be spotted. Its not just 16 yards like in college.
In the second half of the video, Turner displays his off coverage skills. He looks far better here, making plays on the ball and not tugging on people's jersey. I know, I know, when you here off man, you receive head trauma;s of Tim Jennings giving up massive cushion, but a closer look shows that Turner gives up a fairly decent amount without being outlandish. He reacts well to the ball and understands routes as he is able to read what is being run, quickkly.
Turner is not a bad prospect. For the most part, I like what he brings in terms of physicality and athleticism. However, he better work on that press coverage if he wishes to crack the roster. I realize the Colts dont use that type of coverage very often, but extending your arm out and grabbing people's jerseys beyond the five yard cushion he is give, is a bad habit. It could end up costing the Colts games (barring that he makes the final roster of course)
