As OTAs end, BBS guesses the 2010 Colts 53-man roster

And now it is time of a totally unnecessary and extremely early guess as to the 53-man roster for the Colts in 2010. If I get 40% of this right, I'm a total Nostradamus:

QB: Peyton Manning, Curtis Painter, Tom Brandstater

RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Mike Hart, Brandon James

WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Sam Giguere, Blair White

TE: Dallas Clark, Brody Eldridge, Jacob Tamme, Justin Snow

OT: Charlie Johnson, Tony Ugoh, Adam Terry, Ryan Diem

OG: Kyle DeVan, Jacques McClendon, Jaimie Thomas, Jamey Richard

OC: Jeff Saturday

Star-divide

DE: Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Jerry Hughes, Ricardo Mathews

DT: Daniel Muir, Antonio Johnson, Fili Moala, Eric Foster, Mitch King

OLB: Clint Session, Philip Wheeler, Kavell Conner, Cody Glenn, Vuna Tuihalamaka

ILB: Gary Brackett, Pat Angerer

CB: Jerraud Powers, Kelvin Hayden, Ray Fisher, Jacob Lacey, Unsigned Veteran

FS: Antoine Bethea, Jamie Silva

SS: Bob Sanders, Melvin Bullitt

K: Adam Vinatieri

P: Pat McAfee

looks good

I would love to have the dual return man threat of Fisher/James. My guess is James will be the primary return guy. Our CB depth is shakey and we may need Fisher to play on dime packages. Adding a veteran CB is a great idea. So who would you like to get for that spot?

Call me a cynic

That cornerback area looks really scary to me. To think that we’re one injury away from having to use 3 players with a combined 1 year of starting time in the NFL is pretty daunting. Not sure why Lacey’s behind Fisher considering how well Lacey played last year, but I guess it’s got something to do with which cb spot they play at. I watched our young guys get shredded at times last year while obviously they held up more than admirably on the whole. I hope a year of experience and an offseason of studying and learning will excellerate the growth of Powers and Lacey. I’d also like to sign a veteran as you suggested. Only change I’d make is bouncing Cody Glenn off this roster. I watched him completely whiff on more plays then he helped on.

Justin Snow ??

I bet we keep him. I’d be surprised if we kept a 4th RB when Ray Fisher can return kicks. Blair White to the practice squad, one less CB (maybe 2 less), one less LB . Add John Chick, Tom Santi, and an offensive lineman (Alleman or an UDFA). LB and CB could see
some new blood during camp.

Ugh

You are right. I’ll adjust. I always forget Snow.

Who'd you cut to add Snow?

I don't really see the Colts carrying 6 WRs...

It’s more likely they carry an extra corner or safety. Also, a lot of mocks I’ve seen have Jamie Silva relatively safe, and I can easily see one of these UDFA safeties beating him out. They didn’t bring in three UDFA safeties for the hell of it. They brought them in because they’re looking to improve the spot behind Sanders, Bethea and Bullitt.

Other than that, looks like a solid pre-camp roster.

WE NEED VERTRAN CBs , Hopefully after Rule of 8 ends we add Free Agent ( s )

Rule of 8

Does that mean anyone can challenge Peyton for rulership of the clan? And that there is only one punishment?

by ActionOxford on Jun 13, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You're thinking of the Rule of 18

And anyone can challenge, but no one ever wins.

THE RULE OF 8 EXPLAINED to best I can

The top 8 teams last year are forbidden from signing restricted & unrestricted free agents,I believe, unless they have lost one, this rules ends July 22 .For each 1 lost they can sign 1 before July 22
All I know is there are CB free agents out there that we can sign only after July 22,
For Example an old Colt, Nick Harper,
It’s one of the rules put in I think due to no CBA or maybe its just a new rule, not really sure

We Were allowed to sign Brandstater, Tom as he was released and not a free agent

The link is for CBs , but u can pick any position along top, at right if noted TBD means not signed

Am i remembering right?

This would mean ‘goodbye’ to Taj Smith, right? I seem to remember reading that he’d no longer be eligible for the PS.

by teej813 on Jun 13, 2010 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

I think he has one more year of eligibility left.

For example, Touduze was with the Colts in 2006/07 and in 2008 still on the PS.

But if cut, I think he would be picked up. Other teams might think, Taj was with the Colts for a long time, I’m interested what they saw in him. Taj could be #3 with the Rams or Bears.

by Ty46 on Jun 13, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Taj would not be #3 with the Bears

Hester, Aromashodu, and Knox are all significantly better than Taj Smith

Anyone who has a problem with Joseph should stop watching Colts football. It's unfair to expect a back to replace Edge, and Addai has been excellent in all areas when he is healthy.

by DontHateAddai on Jun 13, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

hard to sell a guy as being top 3 anywhere

when he was totally claimable on the PS all year and went untouched.

QB

Do you think Brandstater has more to offer to the Colts in skill as a backup or does he just have an edge due to physical attributes?

by 18forPrez on Jun 13, 2010 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

CB Free Agents

According to ESPN’s website cb’s like Lito Sheppard, Dre Bly, Leigh Bodden, Nick Harper and Nathan Vasher as being released or unrestricted free agents. Any idea on if any of these players, or players I didn’t list, would be a good fit for the Colts at this time? I’m rooting for Ashton Youboty just so I can say his name on a daily basis. Too bad he’s a RFA.

by Mr E on Jun 13, 2010 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Ashton Youboty resigned by Buffalo , see my rule of 8 EXPANATION a few comments above for list we can sign using link

Nick Harper

DO NOT WANT

Any of the other guys would be a good veteran addition in my opinion.

I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

Don't think they'll carry 3 QBs or 6WRs

I’d drop Branstater for Santi, Guns for Keyunta, and fill the CB vet spot with David Caldwell as a FS/CB.

you think White sticks while they let Guns go?

many are thinking just the opposite

They will only drop GUNS if hes a failure in training camp and expect him to go on IR

Otherwise I just cant see dumping a proven commodity that Peyton loves if he has a chance to play

I agree with Shake

but I think if Guns can adequately return kicks in the preseason, he stays and White goes to the PS.

by smonroe on Jun 13, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That would disappoint me... but not surprise me.

At the open practice, Guns got a lot of attention, and he looked good. I kinda figured White was a long-shot at that point, but i’m still pulling for him; i thik he’s be a good long-term investment.

Peyton has been working with Guns

waaaay to much for them to drop him. Blair White will go before him.

Our heads may be bloody, but they are unbowed. We will be back next year better than ever!

Chick is going to be a backup DE

Write it down. You don’t give the CFL Defensive Player of the Year a contract to cut him after training camp. He’ll bring the heat, you can bet on it.

by slash196 on Jun 13, 2010 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, I agree Chick will make the final roster and contribute

I am supprised that alot of people on here and other websites have him being cut, or don’t even mention him as being in the running for a roster spot.

The addition of Chick and Hughes gives the Colts 4 guys that can get to the QB from the DE position, it will make the defense better than last year.

Defense is more important than breathing.

Kenton Keith was also a great CFL player.

Chick in place of King and Pollack in place of Richards

King may make it, but he will take Mathews places if he does make it and Ricardo will go to the practice squad.

I think CB Brandon King will be the next undrafted free agent to step up....

Played against elite competition, good ball skills, and was producitve in college….just a thought.

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Jun 13, 2010 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

i dont see DT King making the 53 man roster.

Mathews will make it as a DT. and Chick will be the last DE. IMO Guns cannot play in the NFL. i believe Guice will make the squad instead.

by tenaytiousd32 on Jun 13, 2010 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

Brandon King will make the team

He did it all at Purdue. Safety as a sophomore, gunner, kick coverage and corner.
