Peyton didn't deserve the MVP in 08 and 09?
Maybe someone already posted this, but in my blinding rage I could not find it. This article by Kerry Byrne made me so mad that I didn't even get past the first few paragraphs. I am of course talking about this quote.
"In the NFL, they should just rename it the Peyton Manning Memorial Award since the voters now hand him MVP honors each year merely as a mindless reflex, even on seasons when he clearly did not deserve it, as was the case in both 2008 and 2009."
I can't even dignify this jackass with an answer or rebuttal, but I"d like to hear what you all have to say about it. All I'm going to say is he led his team to a 14-0 start while playing without his 2nd WR and breaking in a rookie and a 2nd year player. in 08 he came back form bursa sac surgery and won 9 games in a row.

So long as they keep the "V" in MVP, and keep it standing for Valuable...
Peyton will have deserved all his MVPs. If you are looking at just the criteria of a player who is the single most valuable member to a teams success, then there is no question its Manning. This past year Brees had a legitimate argument too, but he had his full corps of receivers, Manning didn’t. Thats why QBs are winning it more than any other position. It is difficult for even a Chris Johnson to justify being the single most important key to the success of his team when he is only responsible for or facilitates only half of the offenses production. QBs set up the run plays, and call plays at the line, and no one is more valuable at playcalling, setting up the run, and getting the football where it needs to go than Peyton Manning. If a team like Carolina wins 13 games this year on the back of their QB, then he’d deserve it, but in 2008, and 2009, it was obvious that there was no strong competitor against Manning for justifiably being the, “Most Valuable Player,” on any team.

Well... got to aplogize in advance in LovinBlue and Cass....... but I cannot help it.
I KNOW there is a reason I don’t like Aaron Rogers as much as CH or LovinBlue (she has her reasons…. they are from the same school).
Peyton Manning or Tom Brady? Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said Brady “is the best by far” among current NFL quarterbacks. “It’s not even close,” Rodgers told ESPN Radio.
Welll…. that definitely calls his intelligence into question. We can call out the analysts as much as we can, but from a pre-sumed “great” QB like Rogers?? and oh, it’s not even close…. he must have some brain damage while he was being sacked all those times. During a poll of HOF QBs,
Voting results
For Peyton Manning: (13½ votes)
Troy Aikman (Class of ’06), George Blanda (’81), Len Dawson (’87), Dan Fouts (’93), Bob Griese (’90), Sonny Jurgensen (‘83), Jim Kelly (’02), Warren Moon (’06), Joe Namath (‘85), Clarence (Ace) Parker (’72), Fran Tarkenton (’86), Y.A. Tittle (’71), Charley Trippi (’68). Joe Montana (’00) (second half)
For Tom Brady: (2½ votes)
Terry Bradshaw (’89), John Elway (’04), Joe Montana (first half)
Abstain: Dan Marino (’05), Bart Starr (’77), Roger Staubach (’85), Steve Young (’05)
I don’t know, somehow somewhere, something tells me Rogers needs help…. (cue attacks from Rogers homers).

Peyton's supporters were better quarterbacks...
Elway aside, I bet Brett Favre would vote for himself, after retiring from voting during a tear filled press conference, only to come back right before the vote was to take place telling everyone that he couldn’t just leave things as they are and that he still loves voting, while staring into a mirror and kissing the reflection he ignores the two votes he is allowed and writes in his own name.

I feel like his article is wrong in everyway.
Jared Allen is a very good player, but he would not be the non-OB mvp. I recall a post here that proved Freeney was better than Allen against better competition with more consistency. And how could Peyton not deserve those MVP’s, if you watch any game in 2009, you could tell he was freakin amazing, lead several comebacks. We got so used to it, we expected it to happen every time. And in 2008 after a horrible start he leads us to nearly a division title. Does this guy have an editor? Surely, he would have thought this guy was crazy, like any other sane, intelligent person would.

I understand the underlying premise of his article; he’s just tired of seeing big name quarterbacks always win the MVP award. I can empathize with him on that, except when it’s Peyton winning it of course.
The problem I have with his article is the fact that Jared Allen is arguably one of the most overrated players in the league. If we really were to have a non-QB MVP vote, Allen wouldn’t have won last year anyways because there was this stud named Darrelle Revis ripping it up all season long.
As for 2008, there wasn’t a single defensive player that stood out aside from Asomugha, that I can recall anyways. Besides, Peyton blew everyone out of the water in 2008. If you recall, the person with the second most votes for the real MVP award was Chad Pennington and Michael Turner, with a whopping four votes each. So in my opinion, homer pick or not, Peyton was most deserving.
Again, I understand what he’s trying to say, but glorifying Allen the entire article and saying he deserves to be in the same universe as Peyton when it comes to his impact on a team is lunacy.
Tired or not, the phrase "clearly did not deserve the honor in either 2008 or 2009"
is pretty clear. He is against Manning winning the ward in 2008 or 2009, not because giving it to the popular quarterback was tiresome, but because there were more deserving candidates.
In 2009, Drew Brees was a definitely deserving candidate. I wouldn’t say moreso than Peyton, but had Brees won it, I would not have been all too upset. 2008 is a different story. There really was no other good QB, or even great player around the league. The best teams in the regular season that year were the Titans, Panthers, Steelers and Giants.
EVH+DLR=BFFs........ God I Hope So!!
Hm

Brees were actually better in almost every QB stats, led a winning team with less talent, and less proven players (watch SB odds)

I am a
…Pats fan, but most of all fan of the NFL. I have huge respect for teams like the Colts, Steelers, etc, and I consider as a treat to watch players like Freeney, Dallas Clark etc. I simply can not “hate” teams, not even the Jets. :)
It does not mean I am not happy when they (the Jets) were beaten during the season, but it’s mostly because of the rivalry for the AFC East first spot and every Jets loss helps. (Or almost every loss, remembering 2008, when they should have beaten the Doplphins in the last round. :D)
As for Peyton Manning and Tom Brady: I consider myself lucky to have the chance to wathc 2 of the greatest QBs who ever played the game, watching they games and head to head rivalry. I envy the people who has the chance to watch them week in and week out. I hope they will play for many years. And almost my main reason I really hate a potential lock out year that it would steal a year from this 2 players (and from as fans to watch them). I prefer Brady and will argue for him, but this does not mean I do not understand why people could choose Manning. (For the record: I for one felt really happy after the 2006 SB for Manning having his SB ring. )
As for this topic: i really felt Brees made last year a fantastic job and Warner a year before, I considered them as my MVP candidates for those years. Cardinals were more of target of jokes, almost like a Raiders before Warner, and the Saints were the Saints, with all the burdens of the last years, and the lack of real success for decades. Peyton worked with talented players, many of them were proven winners. You could argue for him in both years(or even for Favre or Rivers in 2009), but for me Brees and Warner were the MVP.
It does not change the fact I consider Brady and Manning as the greatest players of this era.
As for my “view points”: I considered the 2009 Colts team a more talented one then the 2009 Saints team(both, with and without the QBs). Is it really such a crime? :) This Super Bowl the Saints were better, but i thnk in 6-7 times out of 10 the Colts would have win it.
It’s not sure of course, this is just a way I feel it. The only sure thing: there was 1 game, and this game was won by the Saints.
Everything else is our mindplay, It can be fun to build up theories, but noway to prove them. As Dark Hoodie says: “it is what it is.” ::P ;)

I do not know...
…who would be the best QB of all times. I would not dare to compare QS like Bart Starr or Otto Graham who were great players in a very diffferent era with todays QBs. I consider Tom Brady and Joe Montana as the to best QB of the live ball era, but part of this decision is personal taste, I like their playing style better. I undertand the arguments for players like Manning, Young, Elway etc.
And what is this?
. Oh btw, even the blind can see how Freeney made a difference with a hurt ankle – are you blind?
What are you arguing? Is Freeney a great player? Yes. Could have helped more the Colts? Probably. But is it sure they would have win if he was healthy? Absolutly no, You can guess. You will never know.

I agree
But the MVP award is for the most valuable player, which if you had to guess what position it will be awarded to in 2010, you’d most likely guess quarterback (Manning fanhood aside).
If the powers that be want to see another position win it, then change the name of the award. It’s not something that the league can distribute equally or “even out” like it does with scheduling and the draft order. It probably pisses them off about it too.
Keep the faith!
I mean, they have a Defensive Player of the Year, which is essentially an MVP
They even have an offensive player of the year, which just shows that the MVP is for “value” not total production.
EVH+DLR=BFFs........ God I Hope So!!
Manning
Manning is over rated. He is a great QB but he don’t run the #1 offense. Brees does , and he has for 4 years now. Brees has better numbers then Manning every year.Manning has been some what of a playoff bust too. Remember too that Manning has been there 12 years now and has only won (1) super bowl. Brady has won (4) in less years. Brees has (1) in only 4 years. If you go by Percent’s then Brady and Brees are better. Plus , Brees just won the super bowl against Manning. Brees also took the MVP there. Seems like the top 3 are Brady then Brees then Manning. So yes a lot of people think Manning is over rated and they simply put his name on the MVP where ever they make the thing. If they would vote after the super bowl every year we would have a better winner , more fair. But 12 years and one super bowl win ? Thats not that great , see> Steelers,49’s,Patriots for the dominate use to be teams other then the Pats cause they are still up there.
Umm sounds like a Very Bais and not very knowledgeable fan.
Is braes good? Yes, but he isn’t Manning who is better. Manning has the better numbers also and has been better thought his career. If you look at the numbers ousted of your vacuum you will see that Manning has the better numbers.
