Luke Links: The "Help Me Understand" Edition

Lukelinkslogo_medium_medium_medium

Today's edition of Luke Links is a thinly-veiled... ok a not-veiled-at-all... request to you for help understanding the distinction between OTAs, mini-camps, and training camps.  I think I get that OTAs are any activities (workouts, practices) that are organized.  But what distinguishes mini-camps from training camp?

Ok now that that's out of the way...

The difference

OTAs are not mandatory. Players can not be withdrawn any of their salary for not reporting for OTAs.

Training camp and minicamp are mandatory.

"It's the greatest job in the world until Peyton comes off the field and you think his thumb might be broken and there's three minutes left in the AFC Championship Game and you're down by three to New England and you haven't taken a snap all year. Yeah, it's a great job until that point." - Jim Sorgi.

"If I couldn't play for the Colts, I would probably stop playing football." - Peyton Manning.

I've heard them (players and coaches) refer to mini camp

as “summer school.” From that I take it to be comparable to summer school vs. regular school. Plus, it’s shorter.
