Wayne and Mathis shouldn't expect new deals anytime soon
Colts general manager Bill Polian said Tuesday on Sirius NFL Radio that he told the agents for both players, each of whom has skipped the team's voluntary offseason workouts, not to expect new deals any time soon.
"What I told both representatives was that given the current status of both our budget and the labor negotiations, it is not possible to do anything at this point," Polian said on The Sirius Blitz. "I recognize that they are both very good players, that they are great guys, that we respect them highly, that we value their contributions, and when it's time to do that, when it's propitious to do that, when it is possible to do it, we will."

I wonder if Wayne and Mathis will get to the point where they refuse to play.
Because lets be honest, they could probably get away with douching through OTAs, Mini Camps, and Training Camp, then still be starters on the first game of the season. Will their desire for more money outweigh their need to play and be recognized, or are we seriously looking at a situation where we aren’t looking at an epic WR battle anymore, and we get to see what the steal of the draft can do from day one? Things can really get juicy from this point on. I don’t think Polian has ever really screwed players like Wayne or Mathis who deserved what they were getting, and thus far he seems to willingly reward those guys who honestly do work. Will perception of Wayne and Mathis drop if they hold out till the Pre-season or longer? Will they man up now, and work their asses off to show they deserve what they are demanding? Will “next man up,” be a saving grace for some guys looking to prove themselves in primetime? This is getting juicy.

Click the link , fanshot title, article says a no show after aug 10 in year without CBA & another year gets added to ones contract, they would put themselves in a worse position

heres the quote from the article, assume applies to Mathis as well
“I don’t think (Wayne) will stay away from training camp because there is a rule this year in the uncapped year that if you do not come in by Aug. 10, you get an extra year tacked onto your contract,” Polian said. “So, that is the last thing he wants. He’s got two years to run on his contract. So, I presume he will be in.”

That's good to know.
I hadn’t heard that yet. Thanks.

I missed the interview but...
I wonder what the agents said to him in response. They may be looking at it like that was the initial position in the bargaining negotiations.
If I was one of their agents I counter with “Well Bill, here is what you CAN do…”. There’s always room to compromise.
"When it is possible to do it.."
To make it possible, first thing needed is both guys returning to work.

The gauntlet has been thrown down
It will be interesting to see how Wayne and Mathis will respond, to say the least.
High-tech was bound to appeal to us because coping with it, however painful, is a way to seem intelligent without running the risk of being an intellectual, a perfect American compromise that lets us feel brainy when in fact we are wallowing in the primordial ooze of educational regression: Nobody knows anything but we're still inventing lots of great new stuff even though we're collapsing.

As Phil B says,
nobody plays chicken with Polian and wins.

Gonzo, Garcon, and Collie
are the ones doing the work for peanuts. Their pay is so much less than Wayne’s that it’s pathetic. Garcon is at the bottom of the WR pay right now.
Yeah and?
He was a nobody before last season, an afterthought. Some people say, “you sign the contract, you honor it” but why does that only seem to apply to players who make big money?
I’d like to see one more year, at least, out of Garcon and Collie. I like them both, I think they’ll both do well but you can’t start throwing money their way after one solid season. Let’s see what 2010 brings.
"Life's hard. It's supposed to be. If we didn't suffer, we'd never learn anything."
Exactly
The Colts didn’t know that Collie and Garçon would step up the way they did, but it’s not the time to start throwing money their way. I’m gonna need to see more than one more year from them, at least 2, to really see if that can be a decent replacement of Stokley and Marvin.

Agree, 1 year is not a history to base a contract on whatsoever
Now if Grarcon can continue and catch better , and Collie find more openings, that is each be at least as good as last year and hopefuly take a step up in year 2 , that would be telling
