MY Views On Reggie Wayne, And Why They Should Be Important, Front Page Or Not

Did you guys hear?  Reggie Wayne is non-committal about going to training camp.  I don't know if it has made rounds yet...

Reggie Wayne: 4 time Pro Bowler.  2 time All-Pro.  More importantly, he has 82 receptions, 1127 yards, and 9 touchdowns in 16 playoff games.  Compare that to Lee Evans, who has never made the playoffs or the Pro Bowl, Laveranues Coles, who has 1 playoff touchdown in 5 playoff games to go along with his 1 free vacation to Hawaii, and Nate Washington, who has never had more than 6 touchdowns in a season.  What do those three guys have in common?  They all are getting paid more than Reggie Wayne.

Star-divide

Sure, the Colts have a great front office and the Bills, Bengals, and Titans, ummm, do not, but Reggie Wayne is actually underpaid in today's NFL market.  Here's one thing that is being forgotten.  Reggie Wayne is not just a guy who plays a game on your TV every Sunday in the fall.  He's a person who pays bills and has to make a livelihood.  Sure, I'm not going to be crying myself to sleep over a millionaire not making even more money, but it is about being paid what someone is deserved.  Who here honestly thinks Reggie Wayne has not been a fantastic receiver for the Colts?  Hell, just last year he was leading all of the major statistical receivers a wide receiver could.  That's damn impressive.

You may say he has no leverage because the Colts are loaded at wide receiver.  I say, are they?  Let's look at this.  A 3rd year player who has iffy hands and isn't a great route runner, a 2nd year player who can really only excel in the slot, and a player coming off of a season-ending knee injury.  With all of this, there is also a top 5 receiver in the league who wants more money and who has been one of the best playoff players in the past decade.  One bad route doesn't change that fact.

You may say that 5.47 million dollars isn't bad.  I say, is it?  Look at what the franchise tag for this offseason was.  $9.521 million.  The franchise tag is the average number off the top 5 salaries for a certain position.  Reggie Wayne is a top 5 receiver, however he would not be in that group.  I know that you probably want to get paid by how well you perform, and so does Reggie.  He's working when he's out there catching touchdowns, and he knows he deserves that cash that he's asking for.

You might say Reggie helped mess up the Super Bowl and cost the Colts the game.  I can't disagree that he made a big mistake, but what about everything he's done in his first 15 playoff games?  He's been Manning's favorite target in the playoffs, and it shows.  In 16 games he has put up stats that would make him a Pro Bowler and possible All-Pro, and those are in the biggest games of his life.  That's clutch, and one bad route doesn't take away those 9 times he's put the ball into the endzone, including one time in the Super Bowl.

How about the possible lockout coming in 2011.  That would suck for players.  What would happen if you couldn't work for a year?  Reggie wants to make sure he'll be able to make it through this next year with the knowledge that a lockout won't seriously mess with his livelihood.  There was no outrage when Antoine Bethea didn't show up at OTAs.  Why?  He's doing the same thing Reggie did.

I've flip-flopped on this position bunches of times.  I've got reservations about paying a 32 year old wide receiver a lot of money, especially after seeing what happened to Marvin Harrison.  But there is no disputing that Reggie has earned more money.  He feels like he should get paid, and I don't disagree with that sentiment.  He's made big play after big play.  Remember this?

That was pretty cool, and it helped win Super Bowl XLI.  Why is the bad overshadowing the good?  The Colts know what they are doing, and Reggie is going to be playing in Week One.  To be honest, he doesn't need training camp.  He'll be fine.  I'd like to see him there, but I won't worry if he's not.  Because he's a great wide receiver.

Before I hit "submit" to post this FanPost, I asked yourself: "Would I be embarrassed to say this in front of strangers who were physically present in the room with me and could respond to my face?"  I say that I would totally say this, and I would want feedback on it.  I'm hoping to get that feedback and for it to be available.  I want to know what people say even if they think I'm a douchenozzle or if they think I am great.  This is just my opinion, and I like being able to share it.  Others should have the same rights, no matter how long they have been a member, whether it's since the RCA Dome was the home of the Colts or whether they joined yesterday.  That's what creates a community.  Everyone deserves a voice, no matter how unpopular it may be.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out this that I saw at the bottom of my post.

I believe this to be totally true.  I was once a writer here.  Now I'm not.  I don't feel less important at all.  I don't think my word became anymore important once I became a writer, nor did it get worse after I stopped being a front page writer here.  Just a thought...

so professional that he ran a weak route that T Porter jumped to win the SB?

Get the trade value for him now. It will never be higher.

Silly over-reaction.

Wayne is a huge part of the Colts’ offense. We need him.

His situation was far different from Bethea's

Reggie Wayne is under a contract and was obligated to show up at OTAs.

Bethea was not under a contract, but he was under a tender. A tender did not require him to show up at OTA.

I still maintain that Reggie

has every right to ask for more money and try to use his limited available options as leverage. Personally, I think he has a contract that is exactly right. I don’t think he should get more money and I don’t think he will. I actually don’t even think HE thinks he will. I do think he will be at camp on time and this will all be forgotten offseason fodder when August 1 hits.

My take on this whole brunswaggle is that all football players are entertainers.

They perform at a position on the team with a talent that is rare. WRs of Reggie’s caliber can be compared to a great singer. Talent like that is too hard to find. And I doubt if anyone here would like to see Reggie playing with one of the Colts rivals. He represents Colts fans, and the city of Indianapolis and has said that he wants to retire as a Colt. I’ve watched several highlights of his today, and deep inside I was yelling “Reggie, Reggie!!”. The winning TD in the Colts vs. Pats game, worth a million dollars every time. I agree with Colts Homer, and think Reggie deserves an extension of his contract. But after Peyton’s is settled.

by coltsfoot85 on Jul 19, 2010 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

Here's the thing

Reggie Wayne signed a 6 year contract in 2006 for $39.5 million, including almost 14 million in signing bonus money.

At the time, it made him the 3rd highest WR in the league behind only Randy Moss and Marvin Harrison, both proven future HOF WR’s…

How was the guy not paid? I mean, is it the league’s fault that rookie pay scales have gone through the roof for unproven players? Is it the league’s fault teams are so desperate for decent players that they over-pay for them?

Reggie Wayne has been a fantastic player for the Colts, but he has zero reason to be arguing his contract. This is only an issue at all because of all the other guys recently getting new contracts, who Reggie is either as good as or better.

was he not being payed as a number 2 receiver at the time and still is, being the number 1 receiver for the Colts earns him number 1 pay plain and simple.

by Ufanforreal on Jul 19, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to disagree

At the time, only Harrison’s and Moss’s deals were really considered bigger than this. To be quite honest, Wayne would not have gotten much more money out of other teams…

In fact, the truest comparison of Wayne’s talents at the time of his contract, would be Chad Johnson….who’s contract was extended/upgraded to a 6 year, 35.5 million deal.

Johnson has been, as long as he’s been a Bengal, been the #1 WR there.

While I will give you that had Wayne’s deal been one year later, he would have earned more money, I disagree with the whole 2nd WR money bit.

Also, as a further rebuttal of the whole argument in general….

When our beloved QB signed his then record setting deal (6 years 98 million), he was considered one of the top 3 QB’s in the league (Favre, Brady, Manning, and you could possibly toss in Kurt Warner). I don’t think any of us would disagree with the general opinion at that time?

He then watched guys with lesser resumes, albeit a SB win in some instances, get larger contracts. Even new guys like JaWalrus Russell getting massive signing bonuses….

He didn’t whine, cry, or moan about his contract. The guy just suited up, played his butt off, and won 3 more MVPs, a SB, and a SB MVP.

by DevilsReject on Jul 19, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

still he was the number 2 receiver at the time with Harrison being number1 and earning number1 pay.
As trying to compare Reggie trying to get more money to Peyton there is none, Peyton has all the leverage any player would ever have. It is my opinion that Peyton gets more money so should Reggie for they both are valued players Peyton more so without a doubt but to the lesser degree Reggie is too and deserves number 1 pay.

by Ufanforreal on Jul 19, 2010 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

you dont seem to understand

he was the number 2 on our team but he was the 3rd highest paid WR in the whole league. thats not number 2 money. he was earning number 1 money easily. just because his earnings were less than harrisons doesn’t mean it was number 2 money

by skywalker on Jul 20, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand about the amount of money he was getting at the time, but look around at the number 1 position pay scale now, you have to realize that deal was going on 5 years ago.
Being among the top 5 WR in the league he should be getting the same pay as say the other 4 which he is not.
To make it even clearer does anyone think the Colts would of won most of their critical games without his skills, the man deserves to be paid for those skills.

by Ufanforreal on Jul 20, 2010 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice one, Homer.

However, you are not as cool as you think. :)
There are lots of moments we all love from Reggie. Wether it was him wearing a construction helmet, catching last second TD passes to beat the Patriots, catching a TD pass in XLI, or simply having a picture of both him and Clark kissing the Lombardi trophy.
Reggie is awesome, and while I admit I was angry about him asking for more money, now that I look back at all those moments, I kinda agree to give him a new deal.
Sure, he made a mistake at XLIV, but without him, maybe we wouldn’t be playing that game.
As a fan, I have learned to appreciate Reggie a bit more after this whole thing. Not because how he is handling things right now (which isn’t something pretty), but because of the fans. How a simple thing as this contract dispute has made us come out and say things like “trade him!”. After all he’s done for us, then I just say that we at least understand his reasons.
Go Reggie, and mostly, GO COLTS!

Uh

Usually when an admin locks a topic you’re not allowed to immediately make a new post on the same topic. That’s the policy on pretty much every forum I’ve ever been part of. It’s a good policy.

The world won’t fall apart if you don’t talk about Reggie any more today. Cool off, take a break. The topic will come back, I promise.

I had an opinion that I wanted to share. I did through this. That’s what this site is supposed to be for, although that has gone out of the window.

It's not a free-for-all

If a topic gets out of hand and turns into a big ugly flame war, the admin needs to lock it. It’s up to the admin’s judgment because, well, that’s the admin’s job. There’s always going to be someone who thinks that the lock was too soon, was unnecessary, etc. That’s too bad but you have to respect the admin’s decision. If just anyone can re-open the topic then what would be the point of locking it in the first place?

I didn’t get to say everything I wanted either. But it wasn’t sooo important that it can’t wait. The topic of Reggie and his contract will come up again, I’m sure. Until then we should let it go.

My opinion was just as important as BBS's who decided the topic was over by closing threads

If that’s true I don’t see why I can’t write a post on it.

by Colts Homer on Jul 20, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

It's not

If that were true then everybody’s opinion would be equally important and nobody would be in charge.

But that’s not the case and never has been. A few people are in charge of keeping order. That includes deciding which discussions are no longer useful and should end. This is true on any forum with more than five members that isn’t a complete disaster area.

Everyone's opinion is important.

And as long as it is expressed on here respectfully, it has a right to be posted. I don’t value BBS’s opinion over, let’s say, DevilsReject’s opinion just because BBS is the admin. I’ve agreed and disagreed with something that damn near everyone has posted on here at one time or another. As long as they aren’t attacking others, they are fully within their right to post it.

I don't see any flame war in the comments on this specific fan post.

In fact, none of the other stuff was brought up until you brought it up. All the comments here (as well as the fan post itself) seem to be respectful, and NOT aimed towards BBS’s writing. If people have something they want to say, and its within the guidelines posted by the admin, then it doesn’t matter how many fan posts they make. There are people who think it’s an EXTREMELY important matter when our #1 receiver makes threats on holding out and it is a topic that should be discussed as much as people want to discuss it.

When folks go off on a huge tangent about how much of an A*hole this guy is, or how much they hate that guys writing, then its understandable for the comments to be closed and for some to be deleted. Have I agreed with all that has happened? No, but I understand it.

That pass to him in the superbowl

wasnt the greatest ball. The ball was way inside and the corner had the angle on the ball way better than reggie. Peyton shouldnt of thrown that pass in that type of coverage. Reggie might of been able to get it but I consider that play at the fault of Peyton just as much as reggie

Reggie didn't complete the route...

He was not ready for the pass. It was a two-way street on that one at least.

No doubt...

That was an excellent instinct type play for Porter more than it was a mistake by Reg or Peyton.

I wish everyone would let it go. Pretend it never happened. I think that’s why everyone is so bitchy lately – us Colts fans have endured some of the worst disappointments, but seeing our favorite team lose the Superbowl the way they did left the worst possible taste in my mouth. It felt like a kick to the gut. We got beat by 2 scores. Disgusting. We are bitter people right now, us fanatics! Know what we need? A new. effing. start! deconstructing the super bowl makes me sick

getting beat always so simple in hindsight…. I’m with you, though: the off season is torture. Time to roll. I’m going to check out training camp on the 9th-weather permitting- with a couple of friends. (not because it’s the perfect day. It just happens to be the day we can make it). by LovinBlue on Jul 21, 2010 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Please not again

As much as I love Reggie, and I will forever, we can’t forget about the debacle that was the end of Marvin Harrison’s career. Aren’t we still paying that guy? Loyalty is great; I was there when Edge was honored last year against Seattle. I cheered as much as everyone else. But his end of career decision (see you later old-timer) gave us a Super Bowl. Reggie is safely a valuable player for two more years (his length of contract) but no further considering his age.

by Caesar18 on Jul 24, 2010 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

not pointed out yet

If it is only about getting paid like a top five WR, he should welcome a franchise tag. But players hate being tagged despite the high payout attached to it because they want long term contracts for the big bonus (guaranteed money) and security they give the player. In exchange for that security, they give up raises for upping their level of play. They have already banked the bonus so they have no right to tear up their contract and renegotiate imo. They traded that right for security and guaranteed money. That is how I see it, but of course they have every right to try it. Shame on the team if they give in but it is business and that intrudes enough on the game and fans.
