My Questions and Thoughts Heading into Camp

As the Colts head into training camp here in the next couple weeks, there are a few questions that I have thought about.  Some of these questions cannot be answered now or until training camp is over, however, I would like my fellow readers to give their thoughts and opinions on each question if possible.  I apologize if any of the following issues are repetitive or have already been discussed:

1)  Will Dwight Freeney be healthy enough to participate on the first day of training camp or will he enter training camp on the PUP?

2)  In the event Reggie Wayne misses the first week of training camp due to a holdout, how big of an effect will this have on the offense and its rhythm?

3)  Which CB will step up and take control of the 4th spot behind Jacob Lacey?

4)  Who will be starting at the guard spots at Week 1?

5)  Will Fili Moala be an impact player on defense this year?

6)  Will Manning's contract get done before camp starts?

Please follow the jump as I share my thought on each question.

Star-divide

1)  As in the past with Freeney, I believe the Colts will take the cautious approach and place him on the PUP to start camp.  I believe the main factor though will be due to his conditioning and not necessarily his ankle.  As of OTA's, I believe Freeney was still rehabbing his injured ankle.  I could be wrong, but I have not heard anything new since or whether he is completely healthy.  However, this may not be all that bad as this could give Jerry Hughes some reps and experience with the first unit.

2)  I do not think Wayne's possible holdout will have any affect on the offense and its rhythm.  Believe or not, he is already entering his 10th season.  His experience and chemistry with Manning over the years will definitely overcome any time miss during camp.  We all would like every player to attend camp and follow their contractual obligation, however, any time miss by Wayne will not be a huge deal to the offense in the whole scheme of things.   At the same time though, it's not like I would be a huge supporter if he does miss any portion of camp.

3)  I believe Brandon King will win the 4th spot at corner.  Not only did he compete against the highest level at Purdue to go with his 3 ints last year, he also has decent size to compete in the NFL at 5'11 and 195 pounds.  He has the pop against stopping the run to go with his good cover skills.  My concern with King is will he have enough speed to fit with the Colts defensive scheme.  That is something we will have to keep an eye on.  In the case of Ray Fisher, who will also be competing for the same spot, I believe there is still too much rawness in him.  This is not to say that he will not make the team, but I think his primary spot will be returning kicks ala T.J. Rushing.  If the entire secondary is healthy though (with Sanders in the lineup), I think the Colts will use 3 safeties (Sanders, Bethea, Bullitt) with the 3 corners (Hayden, Powers, and Lacey) rather than bringing in King or whoever wins the 4th corner spot.

4)  In regards to who will be starting at the guard spots in Week 1, well I guess that's part of the reason why teams have training camp.  With that said, I will go with what I prefer.  I would not mind seeing Tony Ugoh start at LG (assuming that he does indeed play well at the spot) with Jacques Mclendon at RG.  I really like the size and potential at running the ball with this group and at the same time pass blocking should still be efficient enough.

5)  I really think Moala will be (and I hope) an impact player for the defense this year.  I think the tandem of Foster and Moala during passing situations has alot of potential.  It has already been mentioned by the team that Moala has improved tremendously during the off-season and I really look forward to that 2nd year jump.  In the end though, he will just be a rotational type player like Muir, Johnson, and Foster and will not be an every down player.  But I don't think that's what the team is looking for at this point in his career.

6)  I won't get into too much detail on this question, but I will go with my gut instinct once again and say YES that Manning will have his new contract completed before training camp.  I understand negotiations may be tough until Bradford's contract is finalized, but I will try to be optimistic on this.  Honestly though, I'm picturing Manning's contract getting done within the last couple days before camp starts and then seeing Manning's serious face walking into camp talking about how its time to get back to business as a team.

Anyways, these are my questions so please feel free to give your thoughts on each or if you have any other questions, please ask.  I'm positive someone here can give an answer or opinion.

Manning's contract

I’m having a hard time thinking that Manning’s contract will be officially completed before training camp. I’d like to think that it’s already tentatively finished — multiple versions of it actually, based on the outcome of the CBA terms — but until those terms are released, I don’t think the Colts want to release any figures and potentially screw themselves over for the next five to six years.

Seems likely

… a lot of it is worked out, but is tentative as you say on what happens with the CBA extra. I can’t imagine Irsay leaving Peyton at loose ends.

I don't know

I think it would be smartest for both sides to wait for the new CBA before trying to work through contract details, even at a high level. There are too many variables that are still floating with respect to the CBA – revenue sharing, 18-game season, player health care / retirement – that even a minor change in one could impact player contracts…. especially the mega-contract that is expected for Manning.

How can you not love a team that does this?

corners, freeney etc

Freeney’s ankle issue is scar tissue, at this point. My question is whether or not playing and training hurt at the end of the season last year has made it worse in the off season this year?

Between Fisher and King I thing King has greater cover skills at this early stage of their careers, but Fisher has raw speed.

A different perspective

Regarding the above comments, may I add this perspective;

1). Freeney will NOT be on PUP as it requires him to miss the first 6 games of the season and the colts didn’t even do that with Bob Sanders in previous years given his spotty health history.
2). Total agreement
3). Agreed but I also believe Thad Turner makes it as the 4th/5th corner as well.
4). I have my money on Ugoh at LG and Devan at RG. McClendon’s game tape suggest he is truly an UDFA. Alleman is a bit of a journeyman and Thomas is still a project.
5). I hope so.
6). Nah, Polian is a procrastinator. He always waits til the current deal expires anyway..He did it with Manning, Clark, Mathis, Wayne, Hayden, Sanders, Saturday, Bethea, Brackett and Freeney in the past. I hate this approach because inevitably you will pay mkt value at that time and it squeezes the team’s cap space.

No on # 1, TC PUP is not like regular season PUP

The Colts can move him on the regular roster any time they want.

Regarding Freeney and the PUP...

There are two different types of PUP’s. The one I am referring to is the active PUP where some type of injury prevents a player from starting training camp. Please see below a link that I found. This will actually be handy once camp gets closer and players are placed on the PUP.

Great job in clarifying PUP

I appreciate the distinction and the link. I really thought you were speaking about reserve pup…whew I feel a lot better.
