Precamp Predictions
Ok fellow homers. Let's set the record straight from jump. I know many of you out there have already thought about the SB participants for the 2010 season. But 1st, I want to see who do you think that we will play for the AFC championship this year. I know I know..things can change with injuries, retirement and etc. Just amuse me and tell me what you think. I can't wait to see what the consensus is.

The Patriots are going to make a comeback this season. But it will be all for not because the Colts are going 19-0!!!!!1111
haha - not at all
I’m just remembering last year that there was something around Week 16… kind of a vague memory…
How can you not love a team that does this?
i have no idea to what you might be referring
but please don’t explain
thank you

The Colts remain constant
But I think the rest of the AFC is in for a shake up, or at a least a continuation of last year’s shake-up. I thinkthe pats are primed to make a comeback in their division but I have concerns about their D. I think the running teams in the North and East could eat up the Patriots in the late regular season and playoffs. I picked the bengals in the AFCCG because it seems just as likely for them as the Ravens or the Jets.

I had the Bengals to, and honestly, I would probably have done it before I knew about TO going there
They have quietly had a good offseason. They have adressed all their needs. Maybe they haven’t brought in great players, but solid ones that if they contribute, make a good team that much better.
I don’t love the Ravens. Way too much hype about what was a 9-7 team last year. Flacco still has yet to play well once in the playoffs (despite his 3-2 record). The Ravens crush the bad teams, but struggle against good ones, much like those Patriots. The Jets are also all talk.
The Chargers are probably the least talented they have been for four years. Their defense is in tatters from that unit from 2006-2007. The Steelers could be a darkhorse, because I think they will play well once Ben returns.
Gotta say, the NFC might be the stronger conference right now, or at least it is much more even than before.

The AFC
is far more balanced than the NFC right now, with more teams capable of going 10-6 or better….
Outside of the Cowboys, Saints, Vikings, Giants, and Packers…..you have a bunch of teams that were 8-8 or worse last year…. so I don’t really think it’s all that much “stronger”
In the AFC, you got a 3 team AFC East capable of making the playoffs….2 of whom were in the playoffs last year and one just missed…. the same goes for the AFC North. The AFC South is still the Colts playground, with the Texans just barely missing out last year…..and the AFC West has been the Chargers only because the rest of the division sucked like the AFC East did for much of the Patriots early dynasty years…
Of all the teams in the list, I chose the Bengals….and here’s why…
The AFC West will have some good games, but expect the Chargers to win that one by default. While the AFC South could be won by another team, I expect the Colts to retain their division crown this year.
The AFC North and AFC East are more murky. The AFC East has a potential 3 teams that could make the playoffs, but I expect that one of these teams will end up costing another a spot due to vicious head to head games within the division. The Bengals won the AFC North last year with a convincing 6-0 beat down on the division. This is a team that made good moves over the off-season to help shore up some issues, plus they get Odom back from injury. They are going to be quite good. The Ravens will be in the mix all year with the newly acquired targets on offense, but if they get down, they’ll be out…. The Steelers meanwhile come off a lackluster year with a star QB suspended for the first 6 games. Even if that turns out to be a 4 game suspension, it’s still a heavy obstacle to overcome…
As for a revival of the Patriots, you’re drinking the Kool-aid. Their defense did NOT get any kind of improvement over last year. They have not brought in any kind of help to generate more sacks. Their #1 offensive weapon probably won’t even be ready to go by Week 4 of the year. They will be a tough team as long as Brady is their QB, but you can forget about them being dominant this year….especially in their own division…
They weren't dominant last year
even in their division. People (cough* media members *cough) seem to just assume that Belichick will just develop these defensive players becuase he’s Belichick. He’s done that with the secondary, and each of their three 1st round d-lineman developed nicely, but Belichick’s defense was built on linebackers, and LBs that with the exception of Rosevelt Colvin, were either already here (Bruschi, McGinest) or brought in via FA (Vrabel).
Belichick finally has an all-Belichick defense, with no player dating back to the Parcells era, and that has coincided with the defense slipping.

I am the lone Steeler vote
As soon as Ben starts playin, hes gonna rape his way to the champ game.
But seriously, i think they will surprise everyone (except me)

They’ll still make some noise, this is after all the Steelers. However, unless they magically run off a 3-1 or 4-0 start…. I have a feeling another 8-8 or perhaps 9-7 season and home for the postseason is in store for them…
And that comes from a friend of mine who is as diehard Steeler fan as I am a Colts fan..

I think the Colts will see San Diego in the Divisional Round.
But I think that the Ray Lewis and that Ravens’ D has one last run in them. Don’t think it will be enough for them to overtake the Colts though. Manning still owns them.

For the record
At this point, I see the Bengals as the best threat to the Colts. Thery are dangerously balanced now on offense and defense. They have big targets for Palmer at TE and wideout. Finally, the defense is a little scary and very underrated. The Chargers just don’t get it organizationally. AJ Smith can’t keep up player morale with his antics, way too much dissention and the team assumes that their talent will get them there…NOT! Everyone else has way too many question marks. Get ready to cast your NFC predictions.
Jets don't scare me quite yet.
Maybe next year. They still have a pretty inexperienced QB and their team is loaded with big piles of crazy. They mightaswell see if Ron Artest wants to come play tight end for them. Status quo gets maintained. We’ll play the Steelers or Chargers in the AFCCG.

I predict
Jim Caldwell will use the term ‘and things of that nature’ exhaustively between now and the Colt’s SB win next Feb.
