Colts DE John Chick- A player on Paul Kuharsky's radar
From the article: But Chick looks to fit the Colts’ mold and is the kind of guy they like to coach up and give a chance. Mel Kiper had him as his 45th-rated defensive end coming out of Utah State, where he was a four-year starter who also saw time at linebacker. If he comes along, he could compete with someone like Ervin Baldwin for the team’s fifth defensive end spot.

Chick has been an intrigue to me since they picked him up....
I mean, he was a star up north…..granted, that’s not NFL caliber, but still interesting. Somebody saw something.
This could work!
They had a guy from the CFL on Sirius today. He said since the field is wider and it’s a passing league the D players are smaller and faster than the norm in the NFL. They make good situational players, which is all we’re asking of Chick.
If he’s nearly as good as Wake, it would be a real upgrade over our #3 or 4 speed rusher in 09. Especially since we didn’t have a #3 or 4 speed rusher.
Agreed
In fact, I think we only keep 4 TRUE DEs, Freeney, Mathis, Hughes, and the 4th, who I think will be Chick. The other DE duties will fall on our DT/DE “tweeners” (aka Foster, King and Mathews). Heck, Wheeler can even get in there at DE if necessary and would be coming out for nickel packages anyway, so he could stay in and rush the passer if necessary.
I see the Dline roster shaping up as follows:
DT: Muir, Johnson, Moala
3 Tech DT/ Run DE: Foster, King, Mathews
DE: Freeney, Mathis, Hughes, Chick
The only change I'd make...
I’d add Baldwin and put Mathews on the practice squad. We’ll see how it goes with Mathews but I’ve never seen such certainty over a 7th Round draft pick. It seems like everyone, just about, fully believes that he’s a shoe-in to make it.
Based on his collegiate production, collegiate competition, and possibly a need for physical development, I see it as a decent chance that he could either get cut or be a PS player in his rookie season. We’ll see.
Mathis………………..Muir………………………Johnson……………………….Freeney
Chick………………….Foster…………………..Moala……………………………Hughes
…………………………..Mathews(PS or developmental 10th man)….Baldwin
Totally legit
I like the flexibility in my lineup a bit more, but I’ll admit I was making assumptions. I think the Colts see something with Baldwin, and we did as well when he was in last year. With a full offseason with Teerlinck and the Colts staff, he could certainly develop into a contributer!
Either way, I’d be happy.
