Time to re-visit BBS' depth chart prediction for the 2010 Indianapolis Colts
OK, we're a week-and-a-half into training camp and the Colts have had fifteen practices. We're also three days away from the team's first pre-season game. With the Colts releasing their first depth chart of the 2010 season yesterday, I think it's time to revisit that little depth chart prediction thing I posted way back in June after the end of OTAs.
As we all know, this is done purely for fun. Injuries and other unexpected variables always have a way of making the Colts final cuts to the 53-man roster an interesting experience each season. Who predicted the team would out-and-out cut Terrance Taylor last year? Who had the Colts signing Aaron Francisco?
You just never know. But, because guessing rosters is fun, here is my attempt...
QB: Peyton Manning, Curtis Painter, Tom Brandstater
RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Mike Hart, Brandon James
WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Sam Giguere, Taj Smith
TE: Dallas Clark, Brody Eldridge, Jacob Tamme, Justin Snow
OT: Charlie Johnson, Tony Ugoh, Adam Terry, Ryan Diem
OG: Kyle DeVan, Mike Pollak, Jamey Richard
OC: Jeff Saturday, Jacques McClendon
Notes: Back in June, I had the Colts keeping Blair White. Now, Taj Smith supplants him. This is not to suggest White has had a bad camp. He's been quite good. However, Taj Smith has been better. White might be practice squad material. Pretty much every other person and position is the same since my June prediction. The only changes are I replaced Mike Pollak with Jaimie Thomas and moved McClendon from guard to back-up center.
DE: Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Jerry Hughes, John Chick
DT: Daniel Muir, Antonio Johnson, Fili Moala, Eric Foster, Mitch King
OLB: Clint Session, Philip Wheeler, Kavell Conner, Ramon Humber
ILB: Gary Brackett, Cody Glenn, Pat Angerer
CB: Jerraud Powers, Kelvin Hayden, Ray Fisher, Jacob Lacey, Deshea Townsend
FS: Antoine Bethea, Mike Newton
SS: Bob Sanders, Melvin Bullitt
P: Pat McAfee
Notes: A few changes on defense. Vuna Tuihalamaka is gone and replaced by Ramon Humber. Jamie Silva is out and replaced by Mike Newton. "Unsigned veteran" is gone and replaced by Deshea Townsend. Finally, Ricardo Mathews is toast and John Chick has his spot.

How has Newton been in Special Teams drills?
Because to me, that’s where Silva shines (punt returning excepted). He’s been one of the reasons special teams have been more respectable recently.

Looks good
But I doubt both Guns and Taj make it. Silva’s experience should help keep his spot.

nice roster
cool game ..i play it myself. i think Blaire White will make it over gunz just because of his size. if gunz does make it, Smith will not.(he likes the night life too much) or…..B.James makes it as a wr and they keep Moore. kinda sucks that Guice has had the dropsies. and i’m not sure how they work it but mathews will be on the 53.
Roster Tweaks
Nice job…however, given Sanders history, the colts always carry 5 safeties. Therefore, I think Caldwell makes it and Brandstetter goes to the PS. Also, I think Mathews sticks and Taj or Guns is released to the PS. I think Taj may be relegated. Finally, I question whether Humber makes it..I would love to see Anderson take his spot and be a standup pass rusher in Coyer’s scheme.
Taj and Guns
Neither are PS eligible, right?

"Who predicted the team would out-and-out cut Terrance Taylor last year"? Not me, that's for certain.
Hell, I damn near had him penciled in as the primary backup at tackle. Then he goes and stinks the place up so bad he doesn’t even make the team. I didn’t just have egg on my face, I had a whole damn omlet.
That’s why I’m not into these prediction games. I’m still having to live down my comments in ‘98 about the Colts blowing it by getting that skinny kid from Tennessee who probably couldn’t survive an NFL sack… yeah, I’m a real genius at predicting the future, lemme tell ya.

Ok, so who gets the #5 WR spot?
I want to know who not to put my money on.

Care to take a shot at the PS?
Just passing this on.
Buccaneers great, and one of the last holdovers from the Dungy Era, Derrick Brooks will officially announce his retirement today.

Fisher and James are in the same boat
Both will make the roster as the kick and punt returners, respectively. Fisher has a much better chance at seeing time at corner than James does at rb IMO.
Only change I would make is to axe Taj or Guns for Mathews at end.

How is he not?
Gonzo is coming off a injury pal. Both Collie and Garcon more then proved themselves last year. Guns in my opionion is gonna give Gonzo a hell of a run at 4th WR spot.
Fisher
Fisher will most likely be a PR or KR and used for depth at CB.
Colts usually keep 4 TEs
Either Gijon or Cloherty likely makes the team. Doubt they’ll keep 6 WR’s, especially if none of them are returning kicks – even though probably 7 or 8 deserve it. Wouldn’t be surprised if James loses the return spot to someone who can also play at WR. I also suspect Brandstater ends up on practice squad – Colts seldom keep 3 QBs active.
Dont need 3 QB's
Colts definitely don’t need to keep 3 qb’s, especially ones as bad as Painter and Brandstater. The Painter train-wreck has continued. Don’t really know a thing about Brandstater. I keep Taj Smith before I keep Giguere, and certainly put Smith ahead of Giguere on the chart.
My roster prediction
Offense: 24
QB: Peyton Manning, Curtis Painter (2)
RB: Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Mike Hart, Brandon James (KR) (4)
WR: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Sam Giguere(PR)(5)
TE: Dallas Clark, Brody Eldridge, Jacob Tamme, Gijon Robinson (4)
OT: Charlie Johnson, Tony Ugoh, Adam Terry, Ryan Diem (4)
OG: Kyle DeVan, Mike Pollak, Jamey Richard (3)
OC: Jeff Saturday, Jacques McClendon (2)
Defense: 26
DE: Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Jerry Hughes, John Chick, Erwin Baldwin(5)
DT: Daniel Muir, Antonio Johnson, Fili Moala, Eric Foster, Mitch King (5)
OLB: Clint Session, Philip Wheeler, Ramon Humber (3)
ILB: Gary Brackett, Cody Glenn, Pat Angerer (3)
CB: Jerraud Powers, Kelvin Hayden, Ray Fisher (PR), Jacob Lacey, Deshea Townsend (5)
FS: Antoine Bethea, Mike Newton (2)
SS: Bob Sanders, Melvin Bullitt, Jamie Silva (3)
Special Teams (3)
K: Adam Vinatieri
P: Pat McAfee
LS: Justin Snow
PS (8)
OT: Chris Marinelli
OT: Jeff Linkenbach
DT: Ricardo Mathews
