Colts coach Jim Caldwell lists several players out of first preseason game against 49ers
If you are a reserve player and are fighting to find a spot on this roster, then Sunday is your day. Colts head coach Jim Caldwell listed ten players as pretty much out for the team's first preseason game of the 2010 season against the San Francisco 49ers. One of the players who will not play is tight end Dallas Clark, who 'tweaked' his knee on Friday during an afternoon practice.
In addition to Clark, seven other Colts were declared out by Caldwell, who added there is only a slim chance of safety Bob Sanders playing. Defensive end Dwight Freeney and wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez didn't practice Saturday and also might not play. The list of players who will not play includes defensive tackle Keyunta Dawson, wide receiver Pierre Garcon, linebackers Clint Session and Ramon Humber, offensive tackle Charlie Johnson, center Jeff Saturday and offensive lineman Jacques McClendon.
Expect to see a lot of Taj Smith, Tom Brandstater, Mitch King, Javarris James, and many other third and fourth string players.

Not taking one chance
If there is one thing I desperately want to see, it is the team come out week 1 with all starters ready and healthy. Obviously, with CJ’s week 1 status in question, that may not happen, but I like that we are not taking any chances with the other guys, particularly Bob Sanders. I am so pumped to see this guy at full speed again, but I admit, it scares the crap out of me every time he steps on the field. It would drive me insane if he were to get hurt in a meaningless preseason game.
Preseason for the Colts is getting to see what backups are capable of making an impact, and which guys who are on the fence will make the team. Backups are obviously incredibly important to this team, who have suffered devastating injuries which have cost us postseason games.
Of course, if you’re Jim Trotter of SI, it is all Peyton’s fault we have lost in the postseason. Apparently he is responsible for the health of the team, the defense, the blocking, and the hand eye coordination of his wide outs. Seriously, I’m surprised you haven’t highlighted this in one of your bad journalism pieces yet. It shocks me that morons like this that clearly do not understand the fundamentals of football get paid to write their opinions about it. (If no one saw it, and I envy you if you didn’t, Phil B retweeted Trotter’s top 5 QBs of all time, which did not include manning, but did include Brady. Trotter then argues horrible points against all the people calling him a moron on his twitter page)

Yeah, i saw that idiot's tweet...
i thought about it and tweeted him back……
@SI_JimTrotter – not even worth hating you re: Peyton ranking. really who cares about what u think?
there are a whole lot of Peyton hating…. and i finally really don’t care…. as long as he plays well and win a couple more rings, those all all gibberish… it still got me mad at 1st sight ….. but seriously arguing w/morons really don’t make sense. He is entitled to his idiot-ness on his tweets…. what i hate most are those who come into Colts Blogs and write stupid stuff…..

no worries
i think caldwell is the polar opposite of bellicheat, he’s probably resting player because of mosquito bites. overly cautious is an understatement. but given our history who can blame him.
I wouldnt care
if none of the starters didnt play. These preseason games are so meaningless that I dont know why they even play the starters this much. there are enough preseason games to let the starter rest and let the guys who are trying to make the team and the rookies to get experience and learn the system. Let the starts rest until the last and second to last preseason games and even then let them only play until they feel comfortable. Im all for BOb sitting and a few others until its go time
me too....
It will be nice to have capable backups that can win….. so let the pre-season games show us who can help the Colts win it alllllll…….

Back in the Swing
Ya, I agree with the posts. Preseason doesn’t mean much. But the part it does play is getting the starts back in the swing again. As this article pointed out, I guess you have to get used to getting hit each year. Don’t want to start doing that Game 1 of the regular season.
All of this injuries worry me, but I’m a worrier. Gonna try to watch today, but being in Florida, there’s no TV coverage.
Oh, and I watched the Jags play and they were terrible. So that’s good news. Didn’t get to see the Texans or Titans plan. Texans, I read, looked pretty good.
(by try to watch, I mean find a streaming source for the game)
Wanted to by Sunday Ticket without paying for Direct TV (just streaming), but not sure I can do that.
Pre-Season
Game 1 , sit all of them if there is even a nick or twitch, but remember you can’t duplicate game speed in practice. The offensive line needs to play and work together or Manning will be running for his life in the regular season.
NFL Network is showing the game live

For all the talk about being safe,
I think there are still a few areas where you want to have your best men on the field, at least for a while.
The preseason isn’t just about analyzing UDFAs and such, it’s also about easing into the regular season. It’s the first opportunity in several months for Peyton to establish rhythm within the passing game in a real-game situation, and, while he’s out there, you can bet that I don’t want to see a bunch of third-string OL trying to protect him from the rage of the opposing first-string DL.
On a related subject, I think it’s kind of hard to accurately judge how good our backup receivers are when Curtis Painter is overthrowing them (or being sacked) on what seems like nearly every play…
'... at least for awhile...'
The preseason isn’t just about analyzing UDFAs and such, it’s also about easing into the regular season.
Of course it is… that’s what Games 3 and 4 are for. Today’s game is much more about the 3rd and 4th stringers.
