NFL Preseason 2010: Colts drop first preseason game to 49ers 37-17

INDIANAPOLIS IN - AUGUST 15: Curtis Painter #7 of the Indianapolis Colts fumbles during the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers at Lucas Oil Stadium on August 15 2010 in Indianapolis Indiana. (Photo by Scott Boehm/Getty Images)

I've got a ton of notes from this game, and while many in the comments are bemoaning the final score, most of the notes are good. Obviously, the person who is most certainly going to 'hear it' in the film room tomorrow is Curtis Painter. He was awful. Three INTs and a fumble led to 34 unanswered points by the 49ers. This picture above says a thousand words about Painter's afternoon.

The silver-lining though is this is preseason. The game doesn't count. So, relax. Chat amongst yourselves while I try and make sense of all my notes.

Special thanks to David Fucillo at Niner's Nation.

Good game guys.

Manning is relentless. Glad that our first team D could stop him, glad this was just the preseason and we didn’t have to see more of him, though.

And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

I only watched first quarter and half the second

Didn’t get to see any of Hughes, Moala, and very little of Brandon James. Can someone fill me in as to how each of them looked?

Hughes showed some good speed

even though he didn’t register a sack… I thought he looked very Mathis-like on the field.

My live feed died at about the time Moala came in, but he registered a handful of tackles and a sack… and from what I DID see of him, he looked improved, and much more comfortable.

Brandon James didn’t have much in the way of ST blocking all day, but he had one return (that ended up being nullified by a penalty) that was very nice in spite of poor blocking. It’s clear that the guy has some serious speed.

My thoughts...

The first team defense, without a few key players, looked very impressive. They seemed to have a knack for creating turnovers. Antonio Johnson may have been right when he said this d is faster than last year. Powers looks like he could blow up this year. Bethea is reminding us why we locked him up long term. The first team offense on the second possession was unstoppable. They were getting a td on that drive. Gonzo seems to healthy and shifty. The running game is the same. Although this may not be our starting offensive line, that run blocking “push” isn’t there yet. The pass protection sure looked good though. Peyton is still pretty awesome, duh. Eldridge looks very good. I have high hopes for him. Addai’s td was a thing of beauty. Showing quickness, hands, elusiveness and strength. Brandon James may be a star returner with some more experience. Mails seems to be taking strides forward. Getting penetration. I certainly didn’t like to see Hughes get lit up with a stiff arm but hey, this is his first outing in the NFL. Hea got a long way to go. Curtis Painter has no idea how to play qb in this league. I’ve said that when he was in Purdue and I stand by that now. I’m certainly not going to hang my head on this loss because the Colts use preseason for depth analysis only. They aren’t trying to game plan to win these games. These games are for talent evaluation only.

I share most of those sentiments.

I was really disappointed that the offense couldn’t get a TD with such good field position on the first possession. You’re right about the line getting zero push on running plays. The defense did look good. Still, just the first preseason games without several key starters.

Also, I missed most of the second half but saw Angerer had a couple sacks which is good.

D - Except for Wheeler

He looked out of place all day. I hope it’s just opening day jitters.

Me too

but I don’t think it is because he looked that way most of last season also. I just think that will be a position the Colts will want to upgrade in next season’s draft, or at least I hope so.

everything metallicolts said except

angerer is going to be a huge contributor by season end. i just believe you are not going to keep this guy on the sidelines all season long. unlike painter who is clueless at his position, angerer is only going to get better and better. the guy was a big time player for iowa but got overshadowed by adrian clayborns phenonmenal play, which by the way, was very much deserved.

im sorry but curtis painter doesnt deserve a roster spot for holding a clipboard. id put addai at qb before painter

Just listened to 1070's interview with Bill Polian

Bad News: He said that Silva was in a lot of pain and that a MRI was about to be done. It doesn’t sound good…

Good News: He said that Bob Sanders WILL play in next week’s game against the Bills! He said that he could of gone today and he was warming up before the game as well.

Did I really see the Colts today?

Oh I’ve had my say throughout the game. It goes with everything, especially our “second” string QB. What is going on with the Colts? We know Saturday will be out for hopefully less then 6 weeks, what’s up with Freeney, Sanders and is Gonzo just rusty or not healthy enough to play? It’s pretty well known that the Colts rarely win a pre-season game however this was pathetic! Are Mathis and Wayne playing up to their abilities or should you a-holes/management talk to them about their contracts at least to give them some respect!! This is not the Colts team I’ve admired for many years. You need your leaders…whether they’re appointed or not. You know who makes the team fall together and don’t screw with them! It’s so crappy and not what I believed Polian or Irsey would every do. Get this team to become a team again because they certainly didn’t look like it today! LET’S GO COLTS FANS, support the team not the management!

settle down

This is the first preseason game. We look horrible every preseason and then rarely lose a game when it matters. Other than looking at borderline roster players fighting to make the team, this is a meaningless game.

That being said, I wouldn’t be opposed to cutting Painter and having Peyton as the only QB – let’s face it, if 18 gets hurt we should just give up because Painter isn’t any good at all, so why even waste a roster spot?

by Jamison1 on Aug 15, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you're exaggerating a little bit

Manning and Gary Brackettplayed, so did Wayne and Mathis as you said. Gary Brackett, Antoine Bethea, Kelvin Hayden, Melvin Bullit…those guys played too. They are great leaders too! I don’t have any problem with the team resting Dwight and Bob. Anthony Gonzalez did play a little bit.

GO COLTS!

Me again

I’m a huge fan however what is happening? Yes I know never judge by one lousy game, I am smart enough to know that. I want to see the enthusiam I saw when watching the NE vs NO game. Tommie is out for another ring and he showed it along with Moss. I’m working my way thru the games and I didn’t see the attitude the Colts needed. I’m obviosly just a fan but if there is dicord amongst the team for whatever reasons………..ie: contract disputes that should’ve and should be spoken about to those select players that are disgruntled, they should be taken care of in one manner or another so we—-the fans can see our great team come together and play with finess! THIS IS FOR MANAGEMENT——Hello, please listen! Your fans know and are quite aware of those that are a tad disgruntled. It shows……..good god it shows……..be the management team you’ve been written about. Show you care about ur players and make this right. They are professionals, showed up for camp, have done their job…….time for you Polian and Irsey to do yours. I don’t know about any other fans but once Peyton is gone, I will never follow the Colts again if they don’t treat their players right. Who am I? No one but you will lose fans little by little if you pull crap………or you’ll only lose me and as I said before, who am I???

You say you're a "huge" fan..is that of the Colts or the Pats?

Because from your comment, it’s difficult to tell. My opinion is we saw some good play today, and some bad. But I didn’t see any “disgruntled” players on the field. Really, it’s been said that winning all the preseason games is unlucky. So, I’m happy with today’s result, except for run blocking and CB play in the 2nd half.

I am a very big Colts fan and you are correct. I didn’t see any disgruntled players however I know because they are Colts players that they would never show that. We have too much class. I’m just wanting all the playeres to be happy and come together like they always do. It’s a special thing for an NFL team to do this. I will never turn against them, just want the best and want us to be in the Superbowl again.

You must understand

This was not a game where we try to score more than the 49ers. If that happened as a result of their efforts, great. If not, the team still accomplished their goal of getting reps for all of the right players — getting the Mannings and Waynes and Bullitts in for a few drives to shake off the rust, then allowing the Mitch Kings and Dudley Guices and Tom Brandstaters to show their value to the team and prove they’re worthy of a final roster spot. If you’re a true Colts fan who has been around for more than a few weeks, you’ll know this is business as usual in the preseason for Indy.

If the outcomes of these preseason games have no bearing on playoff positioning, etc. at the end of the regular season, then it makes the most sense to use them to help assemble the best possible team to compete in the 16 games which do. Simple as that. Calm down – by September 12th, you’ll see why this team plays preseason games the way they do.

You have a great point. I do love the Colts and perhaps the wait of football to start again since our loss in the Superbowl has made me jaded and anxious. I love football. I will never give up on the Colts and I also enjoy watching great football players from other teams. It’s something I’ve grown up with and I will always yell for Peyton but I also enjoy other amazing talented players.

whoa dude... chill.

Colts’ management is sticking to the plan. Keep the players healthy if possible. Freeney & Sanders will get playing time. The coaches are more concerned about evaluating the 3rd and 4th stringers.

Verry little after starters. Angerer looks like a player but he’s little. Safety’s look bigger. Hughes showed nothing but it’s only first game. O-line, GOD help us, Polian does’nt seem to be able to.

Preseason

I think the Colts should release TV 4 from local (Indy) coverage of games….very amateur production. Replays are very slow, graphics are terrible, there was even a close captioning at the bottom which was also very delayed…I don’t understand why that channel is so bad at doing Colts games.

I agree with you about TV4. I'm deaf and actually tried to read the captioning.

It was mostly useless. Words chopped in half, two spliced together. Really irritating when the announcers couldn’t tell J. James from Devin Moore. And half the time the name would wind up “ore” or van Moore. I thought who is van Moore?
