Pat Angerer

I couldn't help but notice during yesterday's game that Pat Angerer did pretty darn good.  He got back to back sacks nd seemed to always be where the tackle needed to be made.  He even ran down the running back that should have been stopped in the backfield from behind.

I saw linebacking abilities from him yesterday that we don't really have on the team right now.  Is it possible that he breaks through into the starting lineup this year?  I know he is slated as Brackett's backup, but I like the idea of Angerer-Brackett-Session being the starters.  I know this moves Angerer out of his normal position, but, I am sure he could adjust.

Thoughts?

I think

He will play a lot of middle linebacker during times when the game is out of reach. He’s in no way ready to run the defense, yet. I don’t think he’s going to play the other positions unless injuries force it.

Next year, Gary Brackett will be fighting for his job.

I actually like the idea of moving him outside.

Looked like a true football player

he just flew around and made plays. I’d love to see an Angerer, Brackett, Sessions LB corp.

just said this in response to another fanpost

Angerer had a great individual day, but the entire D’s performance suffers when GB’s not in there making the calls. I agree that Pat Angerer is a freaking beast, but maybe he’s got a lot to learn

Who does he replace?

Nothing's complicated if you understand it.

Wheeler

Unless Wheeler improves a whole lot this year!

I believe Pat will take Phillip Wheelers spot

I based my opnion on two things. 1) Bill Polian said the day he drafted Pat, that Angerer will be Gary Bracketts back up at MLB and they would look at him in other positions. Im not as high on Phil Wheeler as most on here. I like Pat’s style, he brings thump and atheticism to the position. Not that Wheeler isnt athletic. 2) Pat was a 2nd round pick. Why in the day and age would you draft a player in the 2nd round and have him sit the bench. I understand, Pat is a rookie, I also understand LB is a tough position to learn. But, I think he is a perfect fit. Only time will tell for sure.

Angerer is a MLB

As much as you guys would like him to replace Wheeler (which isn’t a good idea, for many reasons), its not going to happen. Angerer is a middle linebacker, thru-and-thru. You might not think there is much different between playing inside and outside, but I can tell you from personal experience that it is night and day.

Outside linebackers must cover the flat, athletic TEs, slant routes, and run sideline to sideline. Middle backers must cover the A and B gaps, which exposes them to crashing linemen, leading fullbacks, etc. Considering Angerer has always played the middle, it would be a tough transition for him. Especially in our Tampa-2 scheme, I don’t think he is athletic enough to play outside.

I was also surprised

by how BIG he is… he seems better suited for playing the middle where – as you mention – he’s exposed to crashing linemen and leading fullbacks.

How can you not love a team that does this?

he just looks big, despite his size

Indy is listing him about the same as Iowa did. 6’0" 235lbs. Combine h/w was 6’0 1/4" 235lbs.

Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.

Angerer looks to be a good find

But don’t sell Wheeler short yet. I think we will see improvement from him as preseason progresses. Angerer will be a good one, but seasoning for him at this point is essential.

Good problem to have

I think we all would agree having to decide where your stud 2nd round MLB plays is a good problem to have. Before we lost Silva you could say everywhere other than offensive line and back-up QB our team is stacked and our 2010 draft picks were for depth not starters. GB is good but with some experience I see Angerer taking over as MLB next year. Some size in the middle will go a long way towards the Colts stopping the run.
