Ask A Packers Fan - Preseason Game Edition

As many of you know, I'm a Packers fan.  On Thursday night, the Packers and Colts will play each other in a preseason game at Lambeau Field.

This is usually the game where the starters play the most, though I don't believe Aaron Rodgers will play very long.  Use this thread to ask any questions about the Packers, and I will try to answer them as well as I can.

Best of luck on Thursday night!  Let's hope for a nice, clean game, with no injuries to anyone.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

I think it's more the secondary.

Last year, the Packers gave up huge passing yards to Pittsburgh in December and then again to Arizona in the playoffs.

I was hoping the Packers would draft a DB in April, but they waited until the third round to do it. I was hoping they’d use their first-round pick for a DB, but they selected Bulaga instead.

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Does the fact that the Packers secondary got destroyed by both the Cardinals and the Steelers last season

(both are like the Colts in that they have, or in the Cardinals case had, a great QB that overcomes deficiencies in his offensive line) going against Peyton Manning and the Colts offense? And will this be a concern going into the season? Hasselbeck also seemed to have success as well in last week’s game.

Not really.

The Packers haven’t really played with their full defense yet in any preseason games, so I’m not worried.

Manning may have a good game, but I think a lot of it depends on how long he’s under center. You can bet it’s not going to look like the Packers-Colts game in 2008 at Lambeau Field this time.

A lot depends on what kind of offensive line he has.

It really gelled toward the end of last year, and Grant posted some breakout games. In the game against Seattle, it was not just Grant—the team as a whole rushed for over 200 yards.

Oh,

And Brandon Jackson’s been improving every year he’s been in the NFL. In that Seattle game, he scored three touchdowns.

So tell us a bit about the Packer's draft success over the past 10 yrs

The Colts tend to build through the draft and develop their talent in-house. They rarely sign free agents. What about the Pack? What’s their success rate through the draft? Were most of their better players (who are they, by the way?) drafted or signed off another team?

I would guess about 2/3 through the draft, the remaining were free agents.

Al Harris and Charles Woodson, who compose the Packers’ cornerback tandem, were free agent signings. Ryan Grant was a free agent, too—he was picked up off the Giants’ practice squad and nearly rushed for 1,000 yards in ten games with GB.

Driver, Jennings, and Rodgers were all draft picks. Everyone knows Rodgers’ story—he fell all the way to 25th overall and the Packers picked him then. It was widely suspected that Rodgers would get drafted by his hometown team, the San Francisco 49ers, but they selected Alex Smith instead.

Last year, Rodgers outdueled Smith in a 30-24 Packers win at Lambeau Field. The two quarterbacks will match up again this year, again at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

Er, Ryan Grant arrived in 2007,

And the nearly 1,000 yards is his rushing total for that season.

Woodson is a beast...

He was awesome at U of M. I grew up in Michigan, so I followed Michigan and Mich State. I remember being sad for the guy when he went to Oakland. But despite some injuries, he’s done well for himself. Sounds like he’s found a home in GB.

Could be interesting, Manning against your CBs.

favre or no favre by end of the season, id like to pick Green Bay NFC north champs

one thing i noticed was how often A. Rodgers was sacked. am i just imagining this or was it a big weakness last year. does Baluga* (im sure i spelled that right) step right in and fix this?

by skip2myluke on Aug 23, 2010 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

I think he will help the line to some degree.

Clifton gets injured a lot and was out from time to time last year. His backup, Allen Barbre, was AWFUL.

The O-Line got their act together as the season went on. They did it against some good teams, too, such as Dallas and Baltimore.

No real question

but just a shout-out to the Packers fans. While I don’t follow them too closely, the Packers are my NFC team, in large part because I’m a Cal grad and a huge Aaron Rodgers fan. In fact with my husband being a Pats fan, the only football memorabilia we can agree on is a dual photo frame with one picture being Rodgers in his Cal uni and another in his Packers jersey.

Good luck for the season! And for either team on Thursday night, NO INJURIES!!

it's so hard!

I actually like the Lions, too, because I kinda feel bad for them AND they have TWO former Cal players on the team

Good news is I don’t like the Vikings, well except Ryan Longwell, who used to be a Packer.

Surely every team has either a Cal player...

or someone who knows a Cal player or at least visited the campus.

She likes everybody. You can’t be a football fan if you like everybody, can you? That just seems wrong to me.

/heh

Unfortunately

Cal did not pay its players year over year like U$c, so they weren’t able to entice the number of talented players that that school did… and that shows in the numbers in professional football. Still, I chose to be a Colts fan in the early 90s when they were the team with the most number of former Cal players, and I’ve stuck with them despite the ebb and flow since then.

I do root for any former Cal player individually except for if they play for a certain team in the northeast.

What do you guys expect out of Finley this year?

I grabbed him in almost every fantasy league I’m in.

by Aerostar193 on Aug 24, 2010 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

I think he'll get worked into the starting lineup more this year.

In preseason, he’s run some routes with the starting offense. He really stepped forward at the end of last year and helped the Packers in December—in particular, the game against Baltimore, when he scored two touchdowns.

Just in case anyone is wondering,

Al Harris (CB, for GB) is out for Thursday’s game.

His injury, it seems, was more than an ACL tear.
