Mike Lombardi Working Hard To Piss Off Every Colts Fan In Creation
Mike has an article about the NFL in GQ magazine this quarter. The article names the 11-or-so smartest players in the NFL. Oddly, Lombardi does not list Peyton Manning, and provides a very shaky reasoning as to why he was excluded.
"Peyton Manning is too obvious, so let's start with Schaub."

That's like giving a list of the best comedians and saying..
well Richard Pryor is too obvious, lets start with Carrot Top.

Nothing wrong
With this article…..he’s pretty much stated that Manning is the smartest guy in the NFL….. so he’s trying to involve more people.
I really don’t have a problem with what the guy is saying, but I still think you can’t have a smartest nfl players list without Manning…
this
He is saying that P.M. is so obviously the smartest guy in the NFL, let’s talk about the other “smart” guys.
"Hey, quit callin' the f@&%in' plays, alright?...When we call pass plays, BLOCK!" - #18
But would it be too much...
…to just state the obvious? Especially considering his roster is exactly one player short of a typical top-ten list. If the guy’s #1, give him some credit for being #1 and give him the top honor instead of saying it’s an obvious pick.
Seconded
I read that as Lombardi saying “Everyone who’s smart and who’s not Peyton Manning”. It in no way, shape, or form reads to me like it’s saying “All smart players, Manning is excluded”. A person actually has to go out of their way to spin the line that way.

Disrespectful
What is with the rampant disrespect for Peyton Manning? Or is it jealousy? The guy is obviously the best player to ever live, yet people (in the media) consistentlyavoid talking about him like hes the plague. It seems like everyone outside of Indiana/Tennessee/New Orleans is tired of Mannings face dominating and destroying their teams.
Everytime awards season rolls around, the established media seems to grimace whenever Manning wins the MVP award. If any other player (brett fav-rey) won MVP 4-straight times they would talk about it non-stop and crown him king of the world. When Peyton does it, they just go “meh… Peyton’s Peyton again.” Meanwhile, guys like Matt Schaub are “more interesting”… whaaaaaa????
Wait til Manning retires… maybe then the media will give the man his due.

obviously the best player to ever live ... um no
That distinction belongs to Walter Payton, sir.
nothing to see here...
wow. any colts fan that is po’ed about this is waaaay too sensitive. as others said, the manner in which manning was excluded demonstrates the recognition of his intelligence.
besides...
the list is lacking in offensive linemen. those guys are the brainiacs of the league.
I think the list is kind of silly as well, but not because he excluded Manning.
The reasoning he gives to justify calling these players intelligent is just kind of silly… He classifies hand-eye coordination, quick reaction times, and things of that nature as intelligent… I feel like if he wrote this list in the 90s Michael Irvin would land on it just for being athletically gifted…
Manning is the best quarterback in the NFL, and is certainly intelligent, but he isn’t the smartest player in the league. That’s absurd if you look at what some other players have accomplished in their time at college or besides that. Is he even smarter than McClendon on our own team? Or Pollak? I’m sure he’s one of the smarter players on our team but THE smartest? I kind of doubt that.
Peyton isn’t even the smartest Manning. Eli outscored him on the Wonderlic by a fair margin and if I remember correctly I’ve read that he was always the better student. Unfortunately Eli isn’t quite the footballer his older brother is.
There’s no QB I’d rather have; Peyton is far and away the best QB in the league but credit him for what he is and not what he isn’t. I would attend Peyton’s church if he ever got the idea to start one but some of the comments on here seem a little fanatical even for me.
i think you can start your smartest list now....
and maybe you can do a better job than Lombardi…
in pissing off “most” colts fans…. just saying……

Lombari was talking football IQ not overall IQ which I believe Peyton would score high on that too.
I would challenge anyone to go one on one with him on football knowledge.

I understand what Lombardi was trying to do I just think he did an exceptionally poor job. I think what he attempts to quantify is pretty tough to quantify to begin with. My problem with the list is that he doesn’t successfully isolate football IQ. He conflates it with physical talent and the ability to play football at a high level. You could have a high football IQ and be a slow WR or a LB that just doesn’t have the ability to shed blocks and make tackles…
Why is Miles Austin on the list for his ability to… concentrate? Don’t all top quality WRs have good concentration? I just don’t see how Miles separates himself from other WRs in terms of this ability, for example. I just don’t understand what justifies Lombardi’s choice of these particular players versus other WRs that share the skills Miles apparently makes the list for.
And as far as Peyton’s football IQ… the best I can give him is a maybe, honestly. He’s definitely the best QB in the league but is he the most football smart? He’s only ever had to learn one offensive system his whole career, which undoubtably has helped him develop a masterful hold of his offense. Is he really more football smart than a Campbell or a Chad Pennington? Those players are of lesser ability and have a lesser skill level so they’re less football intelligent? If Chad was more football intelligent than Manning, for example, how would he ever have proved it with his shredded shoulder and low velocity passes? He can be as smart as he wants to be but he throws a more interceptable ball for reasons related most strongly to his physical strength. Maybe there’s a backup QB who can’t hit the broad side of a barn but has a deep, nuanced understanding of the game and will eventually be a HOF coach. There are players at the QB position that won’t get a chance to ever really show their stuff and there are players at positions like RB or FB who may very well be intensely football smart but who would think so from watching Addai or AP or CJ run the ball… They don’t get the same opportunity to display their football IQ as a QB, Center, or MLB who gets to adjust plays and protections…
I’m certain Peyton is up there and his ability to read defenses is impressive but not all positions have the capability to showcase their ability in this regard. Someone like Reggie Wayne or Dallas Clark only needs to read his particular matchup but maybe they could do what Peyton does if that was what they had to learn to do coming into the league.
To me the article is vapid and lacks substance much like the attacks on Lebron’s character following his business decision this summer. There isn’t much meat there and it’s a harmless entertainment piece.
Does that make sense? I don’t know why it would piss off Colts fans if I thought that there was a chance that Manning isn’t the #1 football smart player in the league or that there might be some bench warmer or marginal starter out there that will eventually make a fantastic coach or maybe a better coach than Manning if he does go that route (This is even likely. Who talked about Dungy’s football smarts during his career? Or Jeff Fisher’s? I’m sure the league was QB centric then too).

Smartest Player
I really don’t see why some of you are so upset with Lombari and the article he wrote.
It’s clear as day that he was saying Peyton is at the top of his list “Peyton is too obvious”.
You're too sensitive, BBS
If he’d talked about the players with the highest football IQ then maybe you’d have a beef. I’ve not seen anything about Manning that would indicate he’s exceptionally smart. Did he distinguish himself academically in college? Is he well-read? Politically active? Verbose? No. He’s simply an idiot-savant when it comes to football. There are Rhodes scholars who play in the NFL and last I heard, Manning simply got a BA in Speech Communication, not that there’s anything disreputable about it, but it’s hardly an elite branch of learning.
I take it back
I looked at the article and it DOES seem to be about football IQ, but like he said, Manning is too easy and he doesn’t want to argue a point that’s not really debatable. Clearly, Manning has the highest football IQ; it goes without saying.

Exactly, but...
… this is a growing trend. It goes without saying that Jerry Rice is the best WR ever, but people still bother to say it. Imagine if everytime there was a debate about who the best WR was, people consistently didn’t mention Rice because “it went without saying.”
But no, people don’t do that. They say his name anyway. Media members are tired of Manning’s boring (from a media standpoint) personality, so they refrain from mentioning him whenever they can. Its just getting to the point that the national media almost ignores Peyton.
Unless you’re just a lazy journalist, you mention Manning when discussing best/smartest/etc. If you don’t, you lose credibility.
