Indy Star: Colts Waive Mike Newton and Colin Cloherty UPDATED

Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star reports that the Colts have cut safety Mike Newton and tight end Colin Cloherty. Both players looked impressive in training camp, but when 'the light were on' they underwhelmed in preseason.

Speaking of underwhelming in the preseason, the Star had a pretty funny Tweet when they announced that Curtis Painter had won the back-up quarterback job despite playing poorly in comparison to Tom Brandstater, who was released today:

Can you hear the groaning yet? #Colts waive Brandstater, which means Painter remains backup QB.

[UPDATE]: For those that care, multiple reports saying Matt Leinart and T.J. Houshmandzadeh were cut by Cardinals and Seahawks, respectively.

Sad to hear Cloherty got cut...

another year of me lamenting about why Gijon Robinson is on the team I suppose

+1 million

it isn’t over yet though…..Gijon is terrible and Eldridge looked pretty good in preseason. Gijon reminds me of Giguere – slow, usually out of place and can’t catch a cold.

I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

I wouldn't mind Gijon so much if he had one quality that made him valuable...

Like he was an exceptional receiver or blocker but he is neither of those things. I’ll just have to be happy that Eldridge is taking his snaps.

In what I would love to see:

Painter also cut, Colts scoop up Leinart.

Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.

Me like

That would be good. Esp since you know Painter is just another Sorgi: someone to plug into the position when winning doesn’t matter. The Colts won’t draft Peyton’s replacement for another five years or so.

Check it to Pancakes! Pancakes!

absolutley

go get matt leinart……he’d certainly be an upgrade over what we got which with all due respect aint worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin it on

NO Fing WAY

The dude sucks. Worse, he doesn’t care. He has a sense of entitlement. He’s not a leader. He’s a primadonna better suited for reality TV than the Colts.

And he costs almost 3 times as much as Painter.

If you want a no talent hack to ride the bench and make a million bucks; I’m available. On Sunday, though, I have class Monday and Thursday.

Jim Sorgi part two essentially

Very little arm strength. Only true difference was that Sorgi was careful, Leinart is reckless

by metal_militia on Sep 4, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Super disagree

People just look at him as the guy who isn’t good enough to beat out Warner. Honestly, few people could have beaten our Warner.

Leinart could be a quality QB easily. The fact that Leinart is also a friend of the Mannings makes it work well too.

Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.

by Sir Sci on Sep 4, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya, more so just because the Cardinals coaches don't like him for whatever convoluted reasoning

He out performed Anderson in the preseason. It makes NO sense that Anderson is starting.

Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.

by Sir Sci on Sep 4, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

But yet he is.

Your logic is flawed. Leinart sucks, deal with it.

by KingRichard on Sep 4, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say he's going to be Manning' replacement

I’m saying he’d be better than Painter.

Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.

by Sir Sci on Sep 4, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I look at him as the guy who isn't good enough to beat out Derek Frigging Anderson

He sucks, but he refuses to accept it. He doesn’t work hard. He has an attitude. Not Colts material.

If Peyton is truly friends with him, I respect Peyton slightly less.

Apparently Leinart is friends with Archie.

Thing is, he is good enough to beat out Anderson. Look at their preseason stats. Leinart is better. It’s just like how Painter somehow beat out Brandstater. Just because Anderson won doesn’t mean he’s better.

by Sir Sci on Sep 4, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh

Are you really this stupid?

Anderson started and played against starters. Leinart played against scrubs.

His stats aren’t that good. He looked disinterested. He has shown to be uncoachable and unwilling to work.

But hey, he was good in college when surrounded by a bunch of paid athletes and juicers against inferior competition. Let’s sign him!

Apparently I am

A complete and total idiot because I have the opinion that is Leinart is better than Anderson.

Geez.

Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.

by Sir Sci on Sep 4, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

well

it has pretty obviously been proven that your opinion is wrong.

Unless you think Whisenhunt is just deliberately tanking. Maybe that first super bowl was all he really wanted in life.

Cookie Cookie Cookie starts with C!

by willyduer on Sep 4, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

No, it really hasn't

I simply think two things: Leinart is better than Painter, and to a lesser extent, Anderson. I don’t think Whisenhunt is deliberately putting a lesser QB before a greater one, just like I don’t think that Painter was chosen over Brandstater just because Caldwell and Polian want a lesser QB as the Colt’s backup.

I in no way am advocating that Leinart is even a good player, or even a mediocre one. I am saying he is better than Painter…and he is.

Dallas Clark: Some tight ends catch. Some block. Clark just owns.

by Sir Sci on Sep 4, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Where’s your evidence to support this claim?

by KingRichard on Sep 4, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

You're right, to a point

Leinart’s better than Anderson – in every department except the one where it counts.

His head.

Leinart’s never going to make it in the NFL as long as he maintains his sense of entitlement. He’s not willing to fight to play and he’s got zero leadership. You might be able to get away with that in college, and you can get away with it in the NFL at any position other than QB, but Leinart’s a backup at best, CFL fodder at worst, until he shows he can lead a team and get guy to play for him.

by eltharion_doa on Sep 4, 2010 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You know what?

Why not? I would love to see that piece of garbage get the league minimum and carry a clipboard for a far superior QB. Also, he is far better than Painter. But then again, it would be hard to watch Leinart in a Colts uni. Ooooohhhh…..tough one.

was this reported???

(CKAC Sports) – The Quebec Receiver Samuel Giguere was released Friday by the Indianapolis Colts.

That’s the first time I’ve seen this info…wonder if he was really hurt from the Bengals game or just cut, either way good news for Blair White.

IN POLIAN I TRUST

Dont think any of us reported that

but Its no surprise. He failed to produce here in Indy

by metal_militia on Sep 4, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If it's true

I’m excited. I want Blair White on the 53-man roster.

by mtfearin on Sep 4, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

White is a better receiver...

than 1/3 of current WRs on other teams. If the Colts release him, he’ll get scooped up in minutes.

Leinart

I’m not saying pick him up, but $$ isn’t an issue if he clears waivers, right? I doubt he’d come here for vet min. He strikes me as a ‘give me my money’ type of guy.

We’d probably offer him less than what he got at USC.

by smonroe on Sep 4, 2010 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

He'll probably go to USC North

with Mike Williams and Pete “The Douche” Carroll. Hell, they even traded for LenWhale briefly.

Titans release Chris Simms.

I’d rather have him over Painter, Leinart, Quinn, Brandstater or whoever.

Simms could be

the worst quarterback to ever play. I witnessed his awful play first hand in Tampa. Brandstater is who they should have kept.

Housh is a huge cut

Wherever he catches on, he’ll be a huge #2 receiver. He’s not got the skillset to be a #1 wideout, but he’s as good as any #2 in the league.

The Colts braintrust

love horrible back-up quarterbacks. Idiots.

by Ayrshire on Sep 4, 2010 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Painter's da man!

Hey, its hard to find a replacement for Jim Sorgi, but you know, Painter is the next best thing. Scratch that, Painter has even exceeded Sorgi’s side cracks from the opponents. Can anyone explain the rational behind having the NFL’s absolute worst back up QB? I know it hasn’t costed us, but it’d be nice to have somebody competent, capable, don’t you think.

by prayerwalk on Sep 4, 2010 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

Housh got cut?????????

WOW!!!!! I love how much of a moron Pete Carroll is!!!!! I’d take him in a heartbeat, yet we have plenty of talent at WR. Yet if he really had his heart set on the Colts, I’d be pumped to have him.

Also, cutting Cloherty is a no brainer. Dude could not block anyone.
