NFL Roster Cuts: Colts Cut Brandon James, Retain Devin Moore

TORONTO - AUGUST 19: Donovan Woods #50 of the Buffalo Bills looks to tackle Devin Moore #45 of the Indianapolis Colts during game action August 19 2010 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto Ontario Canada. (Photo by Brad White/Getty Images)

It seems former-Indianapolis high school standout Devin Moore has beaten out both Ray Fisher and Brandon James for the special teams return duties. It was reported yesterday that Ray Fisher was released. Today, the Colts parted ways with Brandon James.

James' fate was sealed when he muffed a punt return against the Green Bay Packers in the Colts third preseason game. James, an undrafted rookie from Florida, is eligible for the Colts practice squad.

B. James may make the PS

get a little seasoning. He has some potential.

Im not gonna be shocked if Blair White ends up as a return man.

If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?

by whardiek on Sep 4, 2010 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

idk.. but

he seems a lil slow to return.. he has great hands for sure and good awareness and size… good slot receiver imo

by thebossuzzi on Sep 4, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree with everyone's assessment of Blair.

I wonder what the return depth chart looks like?

If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?

by whardiek on Sep 4, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

No way

No way Blair White returns. Devin Moore can handle both KR & PR duties, I don’t see why not.

Right now, I look at Devin Moore as a slightly better version of Chad Simpson. He might take 2 TDs back to the house and maybe give us 10 extra yards on average in the return game. I will take that, if that helps Manning and the O.

by chad72 on Sep 4, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too.

I look at White as insurance for injury. If he makes the team he’ll be inactive every week unless one of the top 4 WRs get hurt.

by smonroe on Sep 4, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Right now I want to look at backup OTs released

For the love of God, let some running team release a pass protecting backup OT (wishful thinking here :-)).

Kyle Calloway

Bills cut him yesterday.

by Brad Wells on Sep 4, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know.

He was cut because he wasn’t doing well. I guess I’d rather take a chance on him then get Terry back who we know already sucks.

by ActionOxford on Sep 4, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree

At least, he is young and can be coached up on the PS.

Jacob Bender

Giants. Don’t know anything about him.

Blair

at 6’2" with awesome hands and body control.. i can see him being a Colt for a long time, we have speed in garcon and wayne, i can see Blair as a big red zone target with great hands and the catch he made the last game dragging his feet ala harrison won me over

by thebossuzzi on Sep 4, 2010 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

I'm thinking the same thing.

He’d be a great addition for spreading the field on 3rd and short and the red zone. A guy that will force a mismatch and that can just flat out catch.

by ActionOxford on Sep 4, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup... you got him pegged.

Good point about endzone target. I’ve even seen him leap and make great catches. He’s a few inches taller than Garcon & Wayne, as i recall.

ummm… not sure i believe that, but whatever.

you may be right.

Seeing Wayne on the sideline next to other players, he looks shorter than six-foot. I remember one pic in particular where he was standing next to Marvin and was barely taller. But perspective can make a big diff.

If we can trust the perspective of this pic, he does look about 4" shorter than Peyton.

Blair has pretty good arm length too

long arms good jump and a couple of inches taller than most CBs + Peyton throwing to him = endzone TDs and 3rd down conversions IMHO

Well Oakland is stacked at QB

with the castoffs and unwanted riffraff of the other teams. Hey, if you can’t draft a QB yourself someone else has got to able to right?

by ActionOxford on Sep 4, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

another 2nd draft pick gets cut

Buffalo Bills just cut former IU standout James Hardy; Colts, Browns & Bears said to have interest

by thebossuzzi on Sep 4, 2010 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

He never did anything, though.

He has a total of 10 catches, but 2 of those were TDs. Reminds me of Carter “all he does is catch touchdowns.” Maybe if he had a real QB throwing to him he’d be better.

by ActionOxford on Sep 4, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

do you think colts could get him on thre P squad?

by thebossuzzi on Sep 4, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

I’m not sure he showed enough for other teams to have too much interest, but you never know. I think if he clears waivers we P squad him. Moore had some injury issues in PS and James with some practice might show some of that explosiveness from college in the NFL.

by ActionOxford on Sep 4, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Hardy's cut??

Wow… someone needs to pick him up. I think Buffalo’s making a mistake there.

Granted, I don’t think the Colts need to grab him. What would they do with another receiver? But I’m guessing someone else will.

I saw Hardy at his best when he was in school, and have been following him heavily since. He has nagging injuries, and I believe he just ran into another injury a few weeks ago and was expected to miss most/all of this season.

I remember when Porter was drafted just before Hardy, thinking “well, I’m happy to see two IU kids picked early, but I think the Saints will regret that pick”. I wish I was right :\

Ravens waived, amongst others, QB Troy Smith, RB Curtis Steele, T Devin Tyler and WR Demetrius Williams.

Troy Smith!

Now there’s a guy I’d love to have as our backup QB. Completely different aspect to the game. And he may even help us win if we sit PM again.

by smonroe on Sep 4, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe we could get Smith and Pat White!

We could put them both in and they could run around, bump into each other like a couple Patrick Ewings then throw a long bomb pick 6. Touchdown!

Back in reality, if it were anyone but the Colts and a few other teams, the idea of a change of pace QB might work. But that’s just not the philosophy or game plan here. Bringing in a guy that different of a player and that less talented is just doom.

by ActionOxford on Sep 4, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL!

Who do you think is more talented, Painter or Troy? Wait, I’ll give you Painter and 3 seconds just to make it even.

I was thinking the same thing, I wouldn’t mind if he became a Colt

OL and some DBs in similar systems waived so far

Vikings – OT Chris Clark, OG Adrian Battles

Giants – OL Guy Whimper on trading block

Titans – OL Michael Toudouze

Bears – OL James Marten, OL Levi Horn, OL Tim Walter, OL Edwin Williams

Panthers – OG C.J.Davis

Giants – OL Jacob Bender

Steelers – OG Kraig Urbik

Bills – OT Kyle Calloway

Ravens – OT Joe Reitz (former TE, has Indy connections)

DBs waived from teams playing somewhat similar systems to the Colts prior to this season (since next season is no certainty):

C.J.Wilson & Brian Witherspoon – CB, Panthers; Tyrone Carter – FS, Redskins; DeAndre Wright – CB, Vikings; Aaron Webster – S, Bears;

Oakland fielding trade calls for a very good coverage LB that I liked (not good in run support) but gave Manning fits when we played in Oakland last – Thomas Howard, LB

Of course, add Myron Rolle to the above list as well.

2 more safeties

Quintin Demps, not sure if he did not get along with the Eagles, he just got released. Another SS that Colts fans wanted in the draft, Kyle McCarthy, got released by the Broncos as well.

I liked Toudouze, he was average at pass blocking but excelled at run blocking.

it's been a horrible week for former colts

stokley, brock, sorgi, simpson to name just a few getting cut by other teams this week or going to IR.

I noticed that former Colt Dan Klecko was cut by the Eagles, and the NFL transaction page listed him as a RB!!!! Jeez, a guy catches one TD from Peyton Manning and everyone suddenly overlooks that he’s 275 pounds and slooow. Way to reinvent yourself, Dano.
