2010 Colts Depth Chart: Anthony Gonzalez Returning Punts

INDIANAPOLIS - SEPTEMBER 02: Peyton Manning #18 of the Indianapolis Colts watches from the sidelines during the NFL preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Lucas Oil Stadium on September 2 2010 in Indianapolis Indiana. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Guess what the Colts playfully released today at 3:47PM. The new depth chart:

After the jump, come interesting points...

Star-divide

All in all, it's a very good depth chart. Lots of talent in all the key area. Weakness area is o-line.

If this is the final product

im not too thrilled with the prospect of seeing gonzo returning punts

Me either...

Where did that come from?

I'm thrilled with the proposition of gonzo getting extra touches

plus, it’s a sign that special teams are more important this year than in years past.

It's a good point

A year ago the return game (Kicks and Punts) were stuck in the mud! The Colts had made up their mind they would just leave well enough alone and hope there weren’t too many disasters. At least this year there is movement to try to improve this aspect of the game.

Imagine...

Peyton consistently starting with good field position! What a concept: starting on something other than the 15 yard line.

And as for Pollak

you have to remember he was originally a drafted as a Center. Like Ugoh, a switch of position may help his career.

by metal_militia on Sep 6, 2010 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

That's not what I remember

I recall many of us fans saying “But he played center in college; he’s got to be Saturday’s backup and replacement”. Thing is, the Colts said from the get-go that they were drafting him to be a guard. Phil B. Wison heard that too, and in his blog at the time noted this in a couple of different threads. Also, the Colts site notes that both Polian and then coach Dungy openly stated that he’s in competition for a guard, not center spot.

He may have played center coming out of college, but Polian and others are on record as intending for him to be slotted as a guard from the time they drafted him.

Of course, the open question is, would he have developed differently and perhaps better as a center? I really don’t know. As I said in an earlier thread, if he’s finding it hard to be successful at his current position, I can’t see him improving when you drop the additional responsibilities of identifying blocking assignments and snapping the ball on him. Playing center adds responsibilities, it doesn’t merely change them. Plus, he’s still got to block, but at center he’d be facing serious big uglies i.e. titanic 3-4 nose tackles on the 3-4 teams Indy faces. So I admit, I’m not really high on the possibility of him improving with a reassignment. But, the coaches see enough to give him a chance; I guess I shouldn’t naysay that.

Well sure

they said that because they had just re-signed their Center to a new deal.

Of course, they drafted THREE centers that draft. So they needed to soothe him a bit.

Interior linemen, at least for a guy like Mudd, were always interchangeable. So it was neat to see Richard playing and Pollak getting some time as well. Now, though, it seems they’ve shuffled it a bit to give Richard more of a chance.

Which is cool with me. He showed some real heart and aggressiveness in the first four(ish) games of his career, then disappeared. I’m glad to get him on the field, and I also like that, provided Jeff and Charlie are healthy, it ends up being 4/5ths of last year’s line. Continuity is important.

So, an injury-prone WR is returning punts

and we’re only keeping 4 WRs on the 53-man roster?

by mtfearin on Sep 6, 2010 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

I called it yesterday

I knew they were going to try gonzo at punt returns.. He is WR4 no need to overprotect him now.. and with a promising rookie in white at our P Squad just in case.. I think is good way to put gonzo in play more often.. welker did it for the pats.. gonzo will do great

Four months ago...

I wrote that Gonzo was the #4 receiver, and people absolutely lost their minds. I look back on that silliness and still wonder WTF people were so pissed off about.

You were right

I got the clue when james and fisher were cut … I guess thats why we got james and blair on the P squad .. if gonzo gets hurt ,, guess they’ll need to activate them both .. but boy we could have one of the best return games in years gonzo/moore

I was one of the folks pissed, I will admit it. I still believe he is a threat, a great slot wr and has the great hands.

Eh I think people were pissed off on how you approached your side of the argument...

and not necessarily that you believed that Gonzo would be the #4 WR. Either way, its a dead argument now…its a deep group and I’m glad the Colts had this “problem” to somewhat resolve.

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Sep 6, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn't you also say that we should cut Addai and sign Darren Sproles?

While you’re gloating, maybe you should mention that.

And we haven’t even played a game yet, so who’s to say you were right. If Garcon can play like he did in the playoffs, I’ll keep him. If he plays like he did in the Super Bowl and the entire regular season (I’m talking about drops), then I hope management gets him out of there and puts in somebody w/sure hands.

by Naptime! on Sep 6, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's my problem with it (yes, seeing it in print still bugs me)

Statistically, Gonzo is worlds better than Garcon (catch percentage, FO advanced stats, etc), and more seasoned, and (not to denigrate Garcon) smarter, which is a premium in this offense. Garcon is more physical, and possibly more fiery. Speed? I THINK is is/was Gonzo, but not sure. If he recovered, I really did not see it as that close. I saw Gonzo as having put together a few solid seaons while Garcon put together a few solid games—particularly one HUGE one in the playoffs that was skewing people’s perspective.

Correction:

People lost their minds simply because you stated the Garcon was better than Gonzo when Gonzo was healthy. Stop patting yourself on the back, here. NOBODY said Gonzo would beat out Garcon to start the season. As I recall, most of us – including myself – said we expected Gonzo to start somewhere in the middle of the season.

And here I thought my memory was bad…

White catches the ball, but...

…he’s slow! He runs good routes, but he doesn’t have near the speed as Gonzo.

Gonzo's hands are also GOLDEN.

I'm withholding judgment

until I actually see Gonzo back there fielding a punt. It didn’t seem that he practiced it much in preseason games (though I hear he caught at least a few at TC). And if he IS there fielding punts, I’m going to cringe every single time until the play is over.

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Sep 6, 2010 8:02 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Still don't like Richard starting over Ugoh

but I’ll believe it when I see it. I wouldn’t be shocked if the team was awaiting final word on CJ to announce the starting OL. Maybe Richard will be better at guard, but seeing as he was just horrendous at center, I find it hard to believe he starts over Ugoh.

I think you're taking that depth chart

way too seriously. Or literally.

Obvioulsy Wheeler and Diem have backups. And I’d bet the mortgage that Richard fills in if something happens to Jeff.

I wouldn’t even bet that’s our starting O. I think they let one of the janitorial staff put that thing together.

by smonroe on Sep 6, 2010 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Gonzo

Good hands and an ability to shed tackles – sounds like a good choice for PR. These guys aren’t paid to sit on the shelf to admire from afar and handle with kid gloves…I say if he can consistently help get good field position for Peyton, then put him in as PR. There’s a reason he’s #4 on this deep squad, and as for the ‘worst-case’scenario’: losing him isn’t going to necessarily sink the offense (see: last season). Every one of these moves comes with a risk…this one is worth the risk. Besides this roster isn’t set in stone, once Moore gets more experience (or the WR unit gets thin), then they reduce or end his returning.

I can tell this isn't the final roster

look at the number 2 TE! He’s the one of the 4 TEs who shouldn’t even be on the team. And I’m with those thinking that there is no way Ugoh is not on that starting O-line next Sunday, but I guess we shall see.

by MachoColtsFan on Sep 6, 2010 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

Another interesting thing

is that Jerry Hughes is dead last on the depth chart on defensive end. Ricardo Mathews has shown at times he can make plays but idk how a feel about him and Hughes spots on the depth chart. Again its probably meangingless right now so oh well lol.

What's your problem with Gijon?

He’s delicious. You just need to eat more ham sandwiches. You’ll be begging for more Gijon. Oh, football, I don’t know nothin’ ’bout that.

by ActionOxford on Sep 7, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

look more carefully -- they list a starting HBack/FB as well as a TE

Dallas is the Starting TE, Brody is the starting HBack. Gijon, it would appear, will start from the bench.

Hey, Colts fan living in the ATL. I don’t get to see my beloved Colts much since I moved to Atlanta. What’s the deal with Jerry Hughes. I would think a first round pick would be higher on the depth chart. How’s he looked in pre-season and does anyone think he’ll end up being very good?

he did not even played well on preseason, pat had like 3 games leading the colts in tackles and he is listed as third MLB… im pretty sure that from a year or 2, pollina will cut bracket ang give angerer the 1st team… just as how barret ruud did on tampa

Angerer

I believe if Bracket gets hurt (please not!), Angerer will replace him. It’s just formality, Cody is a decent ST player anyway.

I still hope that Angerer will take over Wheeler’s spot, but I’m not too optimistic about this.

Sound decision

to ask Gonzo to return punts. First of all he has the skills to do it, and second, if he is the 4th WR for the time being they should at least fill his list of duties with something useful.

And if he needed to take a bigger offensive role, I’m sure they would pull him off of special teams. But for now, why not?

Gonzo returning punts

After what Gonzo has been through I bet he’d do any job that got him out on the field. He might win his job back, but he might not. You can’t play football like you’re scared of getting injured. FANS are scared of him getting re-injured. Gonzo and his coaches are not. He’s fast as hell, he can catch a ball, he’s practiced punt returns… Go get’em Gonzo!
