Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

The Heisman Trophy Trust is expected to strip former University of Southern California star running back Reggie Bush of college football’s top honor by the end of September, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Bush would become the first player in the 75-year history of the award to have the trophy taken away. The NCAA found major violations in the Trojans’ football program in June and levied serious sanctions against the school.

Good. He cheated. Cheating has consequences.

"Cheating"

A little harsh there. I agree he needs to live with the consequences of his actions, but it’s unfortunate how hypocritical and broken some of the NCAA rules and regulations are.

I Agree

I know he needs to be punished but taking the Heisman away isnt the right way. The Heisman is given to the best College Player. Taking gifts and money didnt make him play better. that year, hands down the best player and thats why he won it. Had he taken steriods then yes take the Heisman but he didnt. Wanna get back at him? Hit his wallet.

by gmitch23 on Sep 7, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

He wasn't the best player that

year either, as Vince Young outplayed him. The only reason he got the Heisman was because he played for USC. I can argue that all day….

by DevilsReject on Sep 7, 2010 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

No way

Hands down, no reason to even argue that. If he wasnt then why was it the biggest landslide vote in Heisman history? One game doesnt determine whos better, they werent even on the field at the same time to compare them in the championship game!

by gmitch23 on Sep 7, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

Bush played on the #1 rated offensive team in the country, on top of which sharing time in the backfield with another +1000 yard rusher in LenDale White. The Trojans play in the worst defensive conference in all of football. If a 2nd player for the same team as Bush can rush for almost nearly as many yards as Bush did, what does that say for Bush?

The Trojans were in most cases the better team personnel wise across the board versus any team they faced. Almost every starter from that year’s team made the NFL.

The only reason Bush won the Heisman is because of his performance against Fresno State, where he accounted for over 500 total yards in offense returning punts, kicks, and playing RB. Both teams couldnt play defense to stop a Pop Warner team in that game.

Bush was overhyped and overrated, I’m not saying Young was the better player, only he played better competition and continually played well…. Bush merely played on a juggernaut and was the beneficiary of that…

by DevilsReject on Sep 7, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

He doesnt control who he plays

Texas had just as good a team around young as bush had with USC. Having two backs with 1000+ yrds means nothing about how good he is or isnt. Young had great WR and Great RB and Oline and still was an average passer. No use to argue, like i said, the entire country seen how much better Reggie was (landslide vote) and u say cuz of what he did against Fresno is why he got it? You just said in the begining Young should have because of the Championship. You are being a hypocrite in your own arguement

by gmitch23 on Sep 7, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Wrong, Wrong Totally Wrong About Young

First off, it was obvious to anyone who wasn’t a USC homer that Reggie Bush benefited from an outstanding college OL and passing game and would struggle running between the tackles in the NFL. (And not only is Bush unable to run between the tackles, he also can’t break tackles, make the first guy miss, or get to the corner.) Did you WATCH those college defenses against USC? Their OL would totally destroy front sevens, and the secondary would have their hands full trying to defend Jarrett and Smith. All Bush had to do was run straight ahead full speed, or at most make one cut. Now in the NFL, he averages 3 yards per carry despite a good OL and Drew Brees at QB.

And as far as Vince “Young had great WR and Great RB and Oline and still was an average passer” … who was this great WR? What was his name? Who was this great RB? No RB on that Texas team had more than 800 yards rushing that year. Young led the team in rushing yards with 1050. (You must be thinking of Cedric Benson, but he left Texas the prior season. Or of Adrian Peterson, who played at Oklahoma, not Texas.) And this great OL … who were those guys? Where are they now? And “was an average passer”? In what universe is 3000 yards at 65% and 26 TDs “average”? The guy had a 164 QB rating!

Now you may have some animus against the guy because he plays for a team in your division. But that is no reason to rewrite history. The Tim Tebow fans are doing that plenty enough.

Lurking

Let me buy you a proverbial online beer….Rec’d!

by DevilsReject on Sep 7, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

ha!

Your defense is because he had an outstanding oline? Ok so then lets take Emmit Smith out the HOF because he wasnt really any good either it was just his oline. O and dont get it twisted, i know who he had around him. Im an Oklahoma fan and hate USC and Texas equally. Young had stars all around him. Just becuase they didnt turn into anything in the pros dont take away thier college accomplishments (another ignorant defense) So many college stars have turned out to be nothing in the NFL, everyone knows that. And Jamaal Charles wasnt a good RB?? Young couldnt even beat OU until his senior season. Go ahead and take that drik Reject offered, both of you need it.

by gmitch23 on Sep 7, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Wrong Again

The only reason why Young didn’t beat Oklahoma until his redshirt junior season was 1) Mack Brown and Greg Davis didn’t switch to the zone read option until halfway through Young’s redshirt sophomore season (when he had to decide whether to change offenses or move Young to wide receiver) and 2) because Limas Sweed, THE ONLY HALFWAY DECENT RECEIVER ON THE TEAM, was injured. You guys barely got by Texas 13-0 that season, and if they either had Sweed or were running that spread option offense, it would have been USC versus Texas for the national title two years in a row.

Yes, Jamaal Charles was on that team … but like third on the depth chart due to being a freshman. Bottom line: no one on that team rushed for more than 800 yards that season but Young.

And where did I say that Young had a bad team around him? Of course it was a great team. They wouldn’t have won the national title otherwise. The issue is that Bush had much more talent around him than Young did. Take Bush off that team and they still go 12-1 because they still have Leinart, White, Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith, Dominique Byrd (TE who was drafted in the 3rd round), and all the future NFL players on that OL. But take Young off that Texas team, and Texas Tech wins the Big 12 that year and Mack Brown is forced into retirement.

Look, in big games against good front sevens, Reggie Bush didn’t even get the most carries did. LenDale White did. White got most of the carries against Texas in that title game, and White got most of the carries the previous year against Oklahoma. (And White was actually having a better NFL career than Bush was.)

Young had much less talent around him and was way more important to his team. Case in point: Matt Leinart won the Heisman the prior year. LenDale White would have been a leading Heisman contender had he stuck around for his senior year. But who were the other Heisman winners or contenders for Texas? That would be, well, Colt McCoy. Except McCoy was sitting out his first season as a redshirt. Get the picture?

So you are an OU fan and a Colts fan. That gives you 2 reasons to belittle Young for not coming to Norman and playing wide receiver for you guys. Well, hate Young all you want, but Bush in 2005 was a total fraud.

Glad to see they did this

Look, we all know the NCAA is a crooked, two-faced farce of a deal. We all agree that a multi-billion dollar industry should be doing more for the players than they are.

However, the players do get paid in the form of free education, which on average, can go for about $100k over the 4 year tuition. That’s a pretty hefty freebie for anyone. I sure as hell would ride the pine for a free college education…..as I’m sure most of us would…

Here’s this thing though, you can’t cheat the system. Whether you agree with it or not, countless other players do it the right way. Bush didn’t. It’s that simple. You cannot uphold the dignity of the sport (that the Heisman says it represents) if your player’s integrity and honor is tarnished. This is why I am happy to see that they are revoking his trophy.

It’s not different than players who use steroids or other methods of cheating. Ultimately, you have gained an advantage over other players in doing so. That’s the bottom line…

Riiiiight

And if the difference between a team giving me a free car and a team such as say… BYU where I can’t even have sex…..or I can get booted out…..

Yeah, I’ll take the free car…

If that analogy don’t work…. just think NY Yankees vs. the rest of baseball…

Anthony Gonzalez should be symbolically stripped of this Heisman as well

To show how big of a Cuban communist he is.

If he is a communist...

Absolutely.

What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game.... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity and his mother's respectability. ~George Bernard Shaw

This post is down right insane, what in the hell does ones political choice have to due with him getting a Heisman taken away.
Is said communist a legal resident of the USA, has said communist committed any crime to void his right to accept said trophy.
Thank GOD there still some rights left in the good ole USA and practicing one choice in politics, religion and speech is still a right by law.
When it comes to Bush he voided his right to that trophy plain and simple.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...

It’s always Bush’s fault! oh wait… sorry… wrong forum. :D

Soaring, is this allowed?

by Colts Homer on Sep 8, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I glad they're

acknowledging Bush’s complicity in in breaking the rules. He would’ve been just as good with out taking money, clothes, cars, whatever. It’s embarrassing for him I guess, but it’s in the past. The Heisman’s been in the tuff shed with the riding mower ever since he got that Superbowl ring
