Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

The Gonzo Bashing

Is straight up idiotic..before there was a Garcon and Collie, everyone was so high on this guy.  He was a stud in college and was a stud with the Colts before his freak injury...he makes a comment about not getting a chance to win his spot back and everyone tweaks out.  I am not defending how he handled it, but seeing that Garcon didn't really play much this preseason, I have no idea how a game time assessment could have been done; I understand it could have done in training camp and behind closed doors, but really, when is practice and game time situation the same?  We also need to consider that Gonzo hasn't played meaningful football for an entire year and getting back into that rhythm is pretty tough (See Tom Douchebag Brady from a couple years ago).

But really?  Everyone is calling for his trade for an O-linemen?  Are you kidding me?  Garcon shows flashes of brilliance for a year and we all want to hail him as an undisputed #2?  There is no way I am ready to accept that until Garcon can prove he can stop dropping passes in big time situations and show consistency...and in that respect, Gonzo was money.  Garcon will give you the flashy touchdowns but Gonzo will give you the clutch receptions.  I understand that all WR will drop gimmes from time to time, but Garcon did this way to frequently last year.  He got better for a period, but then it came back to haunt him later on...and I will never get over that 3rd down drop in the Superbowl.

Yes, I am a die hard Ohio State fan...and yes, I do love Garcon's feel good story coming from D3 school and having a good year...but in our offense, I will take consistency over flashiness any day of the week...we are not a team who struggles to score and solely rely on big plays..we have the best QB ever and he is able to methodically drive us down the field, play the clock management game, physically and mentally exhaust a defense and then punch it in for 6.  This cannot be done when we can't A) Complete key 3rd down pass plays and B) Pick up 3rd/4th and inches on a consistent basis (don't get me started on that).

With all this being said, I think Gonzo should be given a chance to get his spot back and putting him as a #4 receiver and Punt Returner is a slap in the face...and I truly believe that Peyton has more confidence in Gonzo than he does with Collie and Garcon, and based on the pressure it looks like #18 will be facing this year (thanks to what seems to be a garbage O-line), I think he's gonna want someone who is near 100% on the same page as him when it comes to hot routes and blitz beaters. Based on the repetitions that Gonzo and Manning took this summer and they way in which Peyton speaks of Gonzo, this is his guy.

This is a great problem to have...5 stud receiver (Dallas included) and I truly believe the heated competition to win/keep the #2 job is going to make our WRs that much more hungry and determined.  But the last thing we need is someone to kill the team chemistry, so Gonzo should pipe down and go out there and try to claim his job back...he said what he said and he can't take that back, but we all know that he is a decent guy with awesome skills at WR...the bashing has to stop, it isn't like he pulled a Vanderd*ck

Wel

I know that I certain still feel that Gonzo is the second best WR on the Colts. Give it a few weeks, he’ll have shown he’s back.

Garcon's earned the right to start

With all due respect to Gonzalez, he lost his chance when he was injured. It’s harsh, but that’s the way the NFL works. I have little doubt he’ll perform when given the opportunity, because he’s a talented player, but so is Garcon, and Garcon has put in a full season as a starter, performed admirably, and to bench him for a guy who’s never proven the ability to start in the NFL would be a far bigger slap in the face than anything Gonzalez will suffer.

If Gonzo gets his head down and performs to his ability, he’ll get the chance to start in the NFL one way or another. But he has to earn it. Like Garcon has.

i agree with you, but without taking a position on who's better among Gonzo & Garcon/Collie

Gonzo bit his lip ultimately, unlike a many many receivers in this league. I’m actually glad to see he’s got plenty of fire in his belly, and I agree he’s got great chemistry with Peyton. As I’ve said before, a knock-down drag-out showdown in the PS among those WRs just wasn’t called for — we have an embarrassment of riches at WR, so why squander them in a macho competition to see who’s 2% better?

A team is more than the sum of it’s parts when employed correctly. The Colts did what was best for the team, and Gonzo’s smart enough to know it and has hushed.

Punt returner is not insult

I’m sure he wants on the field ANY way he can get there. He MIGHT be good at it. I agree with everyone who commented on your post: he’ll be back, one way or another.

I'd love Gonzo to start, but Garçon earned it.

I have a lot of faith in Gonzo, and whatever his role is this year, he will be an important contributor to the Colts, no question about it.

You mispelled Garcon.

People want to trade Gonzo for a stud LT because Gonzo has higher trade value than either Garcon or Collie and we need a franchise LT. Nobody (that I’ve read, but I don’t read every post either) is bashing Gonzo for being bad, but people are bashing Garcon for being bad. Some people do think Garcon could be better than Gonzo, but that’s not saying Gonzo sucks it’s saying Garcon is really good. However, your post basically says, “Garcon sucks, Gonzo’s awesome. Game.”

You want Gonzo to have a chance to win his spot back; he’ll get it. We’re not like other teams that you never see the 3rd or 4th WR. Gonzo will get his touches and if he makes the most out of him he’ll get his spot back. Some people act like we’ve put Gonzo in the shed never to see the light of day.

Maybe we should just dump Garcon so you guys can quit whining about him. We get it; he can’t catch. You should start a letter writing campaign to let the Colts FO know about it.

Gonzo was upset he didn’t get a real chance to compete. I can see that, this preseason was weird. It didn’t seem like any spots were really open, but on Sunday there will be competition. I don’t care which one “wins.” As long as they’re both putting up big stats I’m happy.

You misspelled Garçon.

And “misspelled” for that matter.

No...

I never said Garcon sucks and Gonzo’s awesome…I said Gonzo is more dependable than Garcon is. But lets look forward to the season…I don’t care if Hart is in there running the wildcat, just score and win (right, imagine Peyton on the bench in a meaningful game?).

Everyone?

The 200+ comments to the posts that dealt with ‘the Gonzo issue" didn’t all call for his trade…as a matter of fact, I think most weren’t even criticising him but rather questioning how what he said (and didn’t say) was being interpreted and reported by BBS. Of the comments that did deal with Gonzo, it appeared to me that most thought that whatever “opportunities” he may have had (or didn’t have) during the pre-season, he’ll definately have a chance during the season to prove himself worthy of the #2 or 3. If there was anything close to “bashing” it was what you yourself wrote in the last paragraph…he should “pipe down and go out there and try and claim his job back”.

I think a lot of Colts fans are looking forward to watching him do just that!

Where was Gonzo bashed here?

I must have missed it.
About his comments, all he needs is a TD or 2 and a couple of critical 3rd down conversions and he’ll be happy again.
