My Aaron Rodgers Rant.
Before I begin I'd like to say this is a post that welcomes people that disagree. I want to have someone present a solid case that will help me "see the light" and begin to agree with seemingly every other football fan.
For now though, here goes.
Am I the only one that thinks Aaron Rodgers just isn't that great?
His stats are nice. He is a superbowl champion, and wins a lot of games. Still, I am not ready to put in him the second tier of Quarterbacks.
When I see a Packers game, Rodgers does a lot of good. He throws a great long ball, has poise, and doesn't make crucial mistakes. However, what I also see is that he has a tremendous amount of help. His offensive line gives him a lot of time to throw. His running game is sub par at times but always gives him key 3rd downs or sets him up with easy 3rd downs. His defense is absolutely phenomenal, and he always throws to WIDE OPEN receivers.
Don't get me wrong, I am not punishing the guy for having a great supporting cast. That is not his fault. I am just not ready to put him in that next level because I have never seen him grind out a win. I have watched many, many Packers games. And Rodgers does not impress me incredibly because he never seems to thread the needle into triple coverage. Whenever he has those drives where the secondary covers his receivers and he is getting pressured, they always go 3 and out. He never overcomes true adversity.
How many times do we see a game where Peyton is rushed incredibly? He gets 3 seconds to throw, and has to throw into a sea of defenders, not to mention he is getting hit every other play and out running game isnt working? Yet Peyton grinds out touchdowns. How many times do we wear Brady out? We sack the shit out of him, hit him constantly, and cover his receivers well? All the time! yet that talented s.o.b.(I hate him, but I also respect him) finds a way to thread the needle and kill us!
I just dont see this in Rodgers. He has great games because he throws to wide open receivers. Half his passes could be made by high school quarter backs. And once again, I am not blaming him for having a great supporting cast. All I'm saying is on the drives he does score, it is because he had wide open receivers and great field positioning. Of all the Packers games I watch, he always seems to come up short when the defense is playing well. So what do they do? They punt, and surely 1 or 2 possessions later his great defense will get him great field positioning, and his wide receivers get wide open and he scores.
I am just not very impressed... I want to see him grind out a win in a game where his defense is shit and his recievers are covered and often dropping the ball. The Packers do have games where they play like shit, and they never seem to win them because Rodgers doesnt step up when his team is playing like garbage.
PS: I wrote this while watching the Falcons-Packers post game highlight reel. All of his highlights were to open recievers who gained a LOT of Yards after the catch... Once again, I want to be proven wrong. I want to see the light...

lol
as a Bengal fan who watches the Colts, isn’t what you just described in your article exactly the same trats that has put Peyton in the upper tier…just my opinion. and I do think both are upper tier…btw
No
Peyton has little to no time in the pocket, And because he has to get rid of the ball so quickly every team plays press man coverage so no receivers are wide open. We’ve had possibly the worst Oline in football since 2009. the lack of sacks is based purely on how quickly Manning throws the ball. In 2010 mannings average time in the pocket was 1.8 seconds…1.8, I think Rogers is top tier but id like to see any other QB lead the league in passing yards with that kind of pressure.
I agree with most of your points, but...
I think they apply to Tom Brady, not Aaron Rodgers.
His (Rodgers) running game isn’t great, his offensive line isn’t great. Yes, he has one of the best receiving corps in the league, but Rodgers is also deadly accurate with most of his throws.
Brady, on the other hand, is afforded with a great running game, the most protection in the league, and a system that gets small, quick players into open space. People are quick to point out the weapons that Manning has had to throw to, but they don’t realize that guys like Welker, Branch, Woodhead, etc. are absolutely ideal for a Y.A.C. system like the Patriots. Seriously, Welker turns so many 5 yard out patterns into 20 yard-ers. It’s quite frustrating.
And don’t get me wrong, Brady is amazing. He’s deadly accurate, one of the quickest decision makers, and an all-time great. But his last 20 games or so are being blown out of proportion just a tad…

This.
Rodgers had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL last season. In fact, Football Outsiders had then ranked 23rd- and the Colts were ranked 22nd.
Brady is offered a tremendous amount of time because the Patriots focus their offensive salary cap on the offensive line and not the offensive weapons. There’s some give-and-take.
Rodgers is that good.

Yeah
This is the same system that has IND ranked number 1 in pass protection for 2010? And i saw the chart your referencing and your right it lists IND at 22 and GB at 23, it also states very clearly above the chart that its a chart for Run blocking showing a teams teams success in each direction. I also states that the pass chart previously mention is based purely on sacks allowed and the adj sack rate.
FO has admitted their passing OL rankings aren't worth much.
So their running ones are as close as you can get for seeing an OL’s strength. PFF had the Colts 25th and the Pack 19th, so they’re both in the bottom-middle tier of the league.

I agree they are both aweful, stats or not.
Mannings quick release prevents sacks, but hes still on his back the second the ball leaves(love to see them work that into one of these charts) and Rogers mobility saves him(and makes his Oline look better on stat sheets).
Still if Manning had rogers mobility id be happy with 19th or even 25th. Since hes the definition of a pocket passer, I wont be happy Until we have atleast 2 Logan Mankins on either side of Saturday.
The Welker/small ball/YAC argument is ludicrous.
Seen Welker play this year? He’s getting downfield. I guess Moss in 07 was taking a lot of screens to the house, too. Gronk and Hernandez…
As for the running game, that’s why teams consistently put 8, 9 in the box, right? Or say to Brady “we’ll let you throw it, if you’re good enough you’ll beat us”?

Seriously?
I’m trying to find the source (can’t right now), but I saw a stat that showed Patriots WR’s being top5 in Y.A.C. in 5 of the last 7 seasons.
I’m sick of hearing Patriots fans complain that Wayne/Harrison/Clark make Manning’s job easy – when lower profile players like Welker, Woodhead, Branch do the exact same thing for Brady.
Did I suggest that Brady doesn’t throw the ball down field? Of course not. But you or I could complete 1/2 the passes that Brady throws underneath – mostly 3-7 yard passes that turn into 15-20 yard gains because of the quickness of these players. It’s part of the system, and Brady runs it to perfection, but things come easier for Brady than just about any other QB in the league. Great running game? Check. Crazy amounts of pass protection? Check. Genius Head Coach? Check. Y.A.C. system? Check.

They don't have a great running game.
Not if a different QB were taking snaps.
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
Last year...
They ranked 9th in rushing yards (10th in ypa).
This year, they rank 6th in rushing yards (7th in ypa).
All with a very lackluster group of running backs.

But with Tom Brady at QB!
No-one’s throwing 8 in the box even if it was Walter Payton standing in the backfield.
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
LOL
Look at how successful the Colts have been at running the football over the past 3 years.
It’s not all about the QB genius.

Like the record determining how good a missing player is,
Just means they have a better run game than the Colts.
Better line, and a QB that actually realises running is useful, not just something you need to do once every 15 snaps.
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
First off...
“Just means they have a better run game than the Colts” – Is mostly my point. Brady’s usually been afforded with a very good run game, usually (not the past 2 seasons) a great defense, and a master-mind HC….A.K.A. a better team around him. A.K.A. it’s a better situation. A.K.A. He should win more than an equal QB in a worse situation…Catch where I’m going?
And nice cheap shot at Manning.

You think if a defense can shut down Brady,
They’re still worried about losing the game?
That’s the exact situation the Colts have been in since James was injured. NE is no different.
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
And also...
Welker has scored 3 TD’s this season in which a 3 yard out turned into a 12+ yard TD, without being touched. Does Brady deserve all the credit for that?
I don’t recall that happening on a regular basis around the league. Brady’s awesome, there’s no denying that. But take off your Patriots glasses and you’ll see the amount of separation/Y.A.C. that the Patriots WR’s accomplish.

They rack up the YAC. Not denying that.
But is that because they’re taking 4 yard passes and weaving through 5 or 6 players, or because they have a one on one matchup in space and the ball delivered in stride, where they can run away from their defender before the safeties close in?
If you want to credit the receiver for everything, you’re forgetting why the receiver drew that one on one matchup in the first place.
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
Because the Patriots run a spread offense?
And you can’t double cover 5 WR’s?
www.Coltsider.com

Spread offense?
I believe you think this is 2007, my good sir. The Pats offense is as far from a spread as you can get nowadays. The Packers run a spread though.
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
I'm sorry...
They’ve replaced a 3rd and 4th WR with a dominant TE (Gronkowski) and essentially another WR (Hernandez).
The Colts run primarily a 2-2-1 and 3-1-1 look – does that mean they’re a ground & pound team???

Agree
I wanted to stop reading after the first line as well, but also wanted to give the poster a chance to opine. Having said that, outside of a healthy Manning, Rodgers is by the far the next QB I would take. He is the best fantasy and real-life QB in the game. If you watch him, he throws bullet passes that are right on the money. He makes throws that maybe one or two other QBs in this league can make and he makes them CONSISTENTLY. On top of all this, he is actually very athletic. Most people do not credit him for his athleticism, and that may be because he is a white QB, but make no mistake, he is very athletic. He is very hard to sack and his ability to throw on the run is second to none (example, that pass to Jennings against the Falcons where he was flushed right was like something from Madden).
Yes, he has a great supporting cast. But do not forget that not too long ago and even somewhat recently, Manning had a similar supporting cast, except for the defense. Would you have or have you ever accepted that as a valid reason why Manning is not the greatest. Because based on what your reasoning, you would have to.
When you add all that he can do, Rodgers is the best QB in the game. There is a QB who shares many of the traits that Rodgers possesses and he will be the #1 overall pick next April. Rodgers is what I hope Luck will become, and that’s why I think it will be very hard for the Colts to pass him up.
I apologize if this sounds like gushing, but this post is bordering on ridiculous. Rodgers is my favorite QB, and second favorite player to Calvin Johnson, that is currently playing in the NFL so even though I rarely post, I felt compelled to squash this silly diatribe.. He is a treat to watch and I am envious of Packers fan that they lucked into him when he fell in the draft. We could only be so “Luck” – y.
I forced myself to read the whole thing - but I also drive ahead past my turn to see what the emergency lights are all about too
All of his highlights were to open recievers who gained a LOT of Yards after the catch.
Gaining a lot of years is often the result of where the QB placed the ball and not just that he hit the target. It also means he likely checked down to the player mose likely to gain better yardage. Important skills of a great quarterback.
"If they want me to be a crazy, emotional, frenzied fan in section 603, then they can't expect me to be reasonable about the business of football"
brett favre doesn't like think rodgers is great either
“He (Rodgers) just kind of fell into a good situation. And on top of that, he’s a good player. I don’t think anyone would question how the talent around him is even better than when I was there. So I really was surprised it took him so long.”
" Mike Brown is the owner that Cincy doesn't deserve, not the one it needs..."
I think Rodgers is the best QB in the NFL at this point.
He has the mobility which sets him apart from Peyton, and his arm is absolutely ridiculous on the run. An absolute rifle. His physical attributes set him up to be the best there is and possibly one of the best there has ever been, should he continue at the rate he is going.
I don’t however think he’s anywhere near to Peyton in terms of cerebral quarterbacking, and as he gets older that might be the thing to hold him back. If we give Peyton a few more weapons (e.g. should we not get Luck, I’m looking at Alshon Jeffery or Justin Blackmon) then I’d think Peyton would reestablish himself as the premier QB. O-Line looked alright pre-injury.
Antoine Bethea - the most underrated safety in the NFL.
Give credit where credit is due...
Rogers has climbed his way up to the top. He’s playing some good football. You have to give him his credit and respect, even if you don’t like the guy. I have that problem with Brady, hate the dude, but I respect him as a player because he’s pretty damn good.
The media needs to stop making such a big deal of him an the Packers
Heres how it goes:
Type one: In the running for G.O.A.T, will go down in history with names like Joe Montanna and Dan Marino. Only Manning and Brady are in this type. With another 1-2 SBs and another 1-2 MVPs I believe Brady could be called the G.O.A.T, while Manning needs to get playoff wins and get them fast.
Type two: Type two QBs are notable in their time, but will be forgotten within 5-10 years. The space between type one and type two is large enough that I find it unlikely anyone will ever jump from type two to type 1. In this category is Rodgers, Brees, Rivers, and Roethlessburgher (sp).

Disagree about Rodgers
He’s still young, has put up crazy good stats, and is already a SB MVP.
Barring injury, I don’t see any reason why Rodgers won’t finish with a few MVP’s, and probably another SB MVP. Coupled with crazy-good stats, what else do you need?

He's the 2nd or 3rd best (asterisked for obvious reasons) QB in the game now.
To not have him in the second tier, above guys like Roethlisberger, Rivers, Schaub, Romo etc is ridiculous.

You’re Brett Favre aren’t you?
Show yourself!!
But seriously – Rodgers is the best QB in the game right now – They WILL win the Lombardi again this year and he will be the league MVP

I really doubt that
Last year they barely made it into the playoffs. No team since the Pats went back to back has even won a playoff game after going to the SB, much less go to it again. Its too early in the season to decide and history is not on his side.
