RE: Regime Change

Before we all call for the head of Bill Poilan, I'd like to look at the fall-off that teams experience after Bill Polian leaves a team:

Buffalo Bills, with Polian: 7 years, 69-42, .625 Winning Percentage

6 Playoff Appearances, 5 Division wins, 4 AFC Championships

Bills, without Polian: 17 years, 124-148, .455 Winning Percentage

4 Playoff appearances, 1 Division win, 0 AFC champs

Carolina Panthers, with Polian: 2 years, 19-13, .594 Winning Percentage

1 division title, 1 playoff appearance

Panthers, without Polian: 14 years,  98-110, .471 Winning Percentage

2 division titles, 2 playoff appearances

My conclusions after the jump.

Overall, with Polian, the Bills and Panthers were 89-55 (61.8%). After he left, the two teams combined for  a 222- 258 record (47.1%). Don't think about this on a quantitative level, though. Think qualitatively. In the past decade, what have the Panthers and Bills been? The laughingstocks of the NFL. Constant losing seasons; automatic wins for the perennial powers, i.e. the Colts.

But when Polian was at Buffalo, the Bills WERE a perennial power, recording one of the most dominant periods of all time, with 4 consecutive Super Bowl appearances. With Polian in Carolina, the Panthers were also on their way to dominance, recording the best 2-year start for a new franchise in NFL history.

With Polian, these two teams achieved record accomplishments. In his absence, both have fallen into sub-mediocrity.

One day, the Polian reign will end, and I pray that the Colts transition is a brighter one than both the Bills and Panthers experienced. But history is not on our side. Appreciate the man who has produced a 131-61 (68.2%) record for the Colts.
