Robert Mathis

When is the nfl trading deadline?  I believe this is Mathis' last year as a Colt.  He wants to be paid like an elite pass rushing DE, but he is not without Freeney on the other side.  So, the Colts will not over pay him.  To me, it seems logical to trade him right now when his value is highest rather than just watch him walk away.  A team in the hunt for a championship in need of another pass rusher will certainly overpay.

Am I wrong?  Does Mathis ever really produce without Freeney?

You could trade him, but I doubt you get more than a 4 or 5 rounder. Might as well let him play out his year. I do agree. I don’t think he’ll be half as good without Freeney on the other side.

I dunno...

I think he’d merit something like a 2nd rounder. Pass rushers are hard to come by, and surely some team would overpay for him. I believe he’s 30, which means he has another 3 or 4 years of productivity left. That’s worth more than a 4th round pick.

Mathis will produce without Freeney

Most likely not as much, but he will still be a top 10 DE in the league. He has a lot of value, and to be honest, I think he deserves every cent that he asks for, unless it’s outrages like what Chris Johnson did. Colts don’t have pressure from the interior, and they don’t blitz, then they better get pressure from the outside, keeping Mathis & Freeney is a must.

No.

Having just an outside pass-rush is a recipe for disaster. You need more than 2 speed rushers to run a successful defense. Most offenses in the NFL can gameplan around speed rushers. 2 TE sets. Keeping your RB in to block. Having your TE chip the DE’s on their pass routes. Roll out from Freeney and double Mathis. Run the ball right down their throats.

Mathis and Freeney do this team a lot of good…..when teams are stupid enough to let them.

Um....Yes

Look at the Colts, what else have they done well? There’s almost never any blitz coming after Bob Sanders left, Mathis and Freeney are the only weapons the Colts have, it’s not like the Colts have BJ Raji or Vince Wilfork to bring interior pressure, it all comes from the outside. It’s not the best thing to do, it would be great to have some strong LBs to help out the run game, like Angerer & Conner are doing now, but nonetheless, even when the Colts were weak on defense, Freeney and Mathis could always get to the QB

Mathis

still got his sacks when Freeney was injured. Having Freeney without a doubt helps Mathis but Mathis is a beast. He is relentless but is not worth Freeney money.

We must have Mathis

He is one of the best defensive players that has ever played for the Indianapolis Colts. We have to lock him up. We can’t let him go.

But...

If they FO knows they are not going to be able to resign him, shouldn’t the Colts get something out of him now since the season is lost?

Winning requires hard decisions

As a team, we’re getting old and while experience wins, old does not win Super Bowls, They (Wayne, Clark, Saturday, etc.) are still good but they are not as good as they were last year and a whole lot less than two years ago. Also, old gets hurt far more easily than young.

Our window with this group has closed. While I love these guys and am grateful for what they have done for us, for me, everybody should be on the block. What’s Dwight AND Robert worth to a team in the hunt for a SB ring?
