The Colts are the worst team in the league...and they shouldn't be

It’s been obvious the whole season and what I’m going to say will not come as a surprise, but this week’s embarrassing performance for which the Colts should secede from the NFL, it’s time to put it out there in the open. The Colts are the worst team in the NFL…and they shouldn’t be.

Look at the Colts opening day roster, only one major player is missing from the lineup, known to us humans as You-Know -Who. Peyton is the best QB in the league, maybe ever, but that is no excuse for how this team has performed. Other teams have lost key players for periods, some longer then others. Arian foster, Mario Williams, and Andre Johnson have missed time in Houston. Peyton Hillis, Antonio Gates, and the entire Chief’s offense have been out and yet their teams compete week in and week out. Even if they are not winning (which they are), they still are in games. The Colts are not, because the Colts stink…and they shouldn’t.

Doesn’t this team still have Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon? Isn’t the O-line still anchored by Jeff Saturday? Where did these guys disappear to? Have we been fooled all these years into thinking these guys have any talent outside of having Peyton Manning as their Quarterback? I believe that they do, can’t these guys still get open, run routes, beat below average defenders? I have not been a huge fan of Reggie Wayne over the years, I feel his success as a receiver stems from Peyton and being opposite Marvin Harrison, but he should still be able to make plays! Is Dallas Clark nothing but an average TE? Is this the same guy whom we have seen make incredible catches, find the open space in the flat, jump over DBs and outrun LBs for years?

But the blame doesn’t even begin with the players. Jim Caldwell is in his 3rd season as Colts’ head coach. Does anyone remember one instance when we looked at Jim Caldwell and said, ‘That was a brilliant coaching move!’ Now, there might not be that many coaches in the league today that you can say that about, I’ll admit, but the coach of one of the top three teams in the league since he became coach, a team that has been on national TV and in so many big games over that time, we should remember something that tells us he’s brilliant! Let me ask you Colts fans, what do you remember?!? I am not a Colts fan and I can tell you that we remember Jim Caldwell for all the idiotic mistakes he has made! Definitely not something you remember about every coach in the league, but with him, we do.

One thing I’ve noticed is that Peyton doesn’t respect the guy. I’m a Ravens fan and I remember during the 2009 season (when we played the Colts twice) at least once in each game against the Ravens where Peyton refused to take the offense off the field to kick a field goal while Caldwell screamed at him from the sidelines. It happened on an even bigger stage in the Super Bowl against the Saints when Caldwell even had to call timeout to get Peyton off the field! You would think that the star QB and face of the whole league, let alone the franchise, would be on the same page with his head coach. But the blame doesn’t end there.

The Colts can’t run the ball, they don’t have a backup QB, their secondary is like a sieve, in fact so is the rest of their defense (I really do not want to kill the Colts’ D so much since they really got killed by injuries this year. The only thing I really want to say is whoever is out there wearing Antione Bethea’s jersey, watch out whoever you are, we are on to you! You won’t get away with it forever!), but that starts from the top. I don’t know what’s happened to Bill Polian over the years but this can’t be the same guy we have admired over the years. He built an entire team to revolve around the insane play of one player! No wonder they can’t win Super Bowls, one bad play by Manning and the game is over, no one else is going to make a play! The last time they drafted a first rounder who did anything was Dallas Clark in 2003 (preceded by Dwight Freeney and Reggie Wayne), which also happens to be the last time Polian found a player who no one else could find (what I’m referring to is Clark’s insane path to the NFL where even by the draft, no one was going to take a chance on him). And going back into the vault, the last good picks I find in any draft is Pat Angerer in last year’s 2nd round, Pierre Garcon in the 6th round in 2008, and Antione Bethea (see above for further analysis) in the 6th two years earlier. Not a whole lot to show over the past 5, count them five drafts. Maybe we have been duped all these years. Has Polian built a legend out of a fallacy?

The Colts just gave up 62, read that again, 62 points in a game. According to what I’ve looked up on the internet, the last time that happened was in 1989. No, I’m wrong, that was 61 points. For 62 you have to go back to 1985. That shouldn’t happen…to ANYONE!

Let me at this time take this opportunity to forget the Colts’ ineptitude and focus on how valuable Peyton Manning really is. This week’s game, and this entire season, should show you that. And before some team goes and throws a whole bunch of money at Jordy Nelson and James Jones in Free Agency, please read this.
