I want to go on record and say that at this 0-4 juncture that the importance of Peyton Manning to this team is no longer debatable. So I thought I'd throw this out there, that personally I prefer Robert Griffin (Baylor) as a QB prospect to be drafted in the 1st round this year, if we don't get Andrew Luck.
I simply would rather hope Manning has 3-4 more years in him than draft Landry Jones or Matt Barkley, who I see as downside-to-upside range type QBs as somewhere from Alex Smith to Mark Sanchez to Sam Bradford to Carson Palmer. I really dont see us getting anyone better than a Carson Palmer with Jones or Barkley. I think Luck could be the next Rodgers or Elway, and those are the generally closest comparisons I can see to his upside (and yes this is no lock).
Robert Griffin on the other hand, seems legit to me. This guy is 6'2", runs a 4.40 at worst, is currently leading the NCAA in passer rating and passing TDs while completing 82% of his passes, and just seems level-headed. For some reason I just see him as a Newton (smaller, faster), or Vick with a sound delivery and much more accurate coming out of college -- not as a Vince Young or Tim Tebow type dual-threat QB, both of whom had just enough in the skill set to dominate in college but are definitely not elite skill set NFL QBs.
Sure I'd rather have a Manning than a Vick -- a Luck type prospect than a Griffin type prospect. But my point is that I'd take either way ahead of a Alex Smith to Carson Palmer type, which is what I see in Jones and Barkley.
