NFL Week 5: Colts Inactives Include Castonzo, Nevis

TAMPA, FL - OCTOBER 3: Quarterback Curtis Painter #7 of the Indianapolis Colts sets for a play behind center Jeff Saturday #63 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers October 3, 2011 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)

Phil Wilson of the Indianapolis Star tweets that Anthony Castonzo, Ryan Diem, Drake Nevis, Kevin Thomas, Mike Tepper, Kerry Collins, and Peyton Manning are OUT. Jeff Linkenbach will start at left tackle while newly signed linemen Quinn Ojinnaka will start at right.

This means that all top three picks for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2011 NFL Draft will not play today. In addition, the third round pick in 2010 (Thomas) is a healthy scratch for the second straight week. Seriously, a third round pick can't beat out the ''immortal' Stevie Brown or Terrence Johnson? Why the hell was this guy drafted again? Do we chalk him up to yet another draft pick bust by this front office?

Seriously, with all the injuries in the secondary, and with the team being 0-4 with corners who seemingly give 20+ yard cushions on 3rd-and-ten, why not play Thomas? Maybe head coach Jim Caldwell wants to, but (once again) is getting overruled. Thomas wasn't on the injury report this week, and even if he were the talk of 'draft bust' would still be relevant. Thomas was a walking band-aid at USC, and pretty much every pre-draft article written about him in 2010 had the words 'injury prone' in the evaluation column labeled 'negatives.'

Today's starting right tackle, Quinn Ojinnaka, was signed just last week. Tepper, who was signed off the practice squad last week, is out for reasons I don't know.

Side note: Remember the Colts decision to not re-sign Charlie Johnson and to cut Kyle DeVan? Yeah, looking pretty stupid right about now.

The Indy Star is also reporting that the Lucas Oil Stadium roof and end zone window are currently open and are expected to remain open for today's game.

Explain to me again

why Charlie Johnson and Kyle DeVan were not resigned-released? While not world beaters, they were solid.

Charlie was way overpaid b y Minnesota. My friend, you’d have gone ballistic, possibly even cannibalistic, if we paid CJ $8M or whatever it took to keep him.

stats

One of those football statistic websites had Charlie Johnson in the bottom 5 of the league statistically throughout the 1st 4 games. I think you need to quit talking about him. He’s not that good.

seth olson and Toudouze are the back-up OL. Brody Eldridge would step in in an emergency

Sometimes the colts do just go with 7 OL, but 8 is more common

If the Colts do get the #1 pick....

with this front office, what guarantee is there they would pick Luck? He’s not a Big 10 guy.

Good Drafts

Aren’t just about drafting the “right” players. You have to “coach up” the players too. This is why some teams consistently have successful drafts. It’s not so much about getting lucky or choosing the right player as it is a combination of coaching, player choice, and a pinch of luck.

With the Colts current lackluster coaching staff, expect many more draft picks to turn into busts until things change.

SERIOUSLY?

And if Tarik Glenn and Wil Wolford hadn’t retired we wouldn’t have to start these tackles after the top 4 options got hurt. Seriously, how many offensive linemen did you want them to keep? 30?
Second guess much?
