Recap Of The Bill Polian Show: Week 8, 2011
After Bill Polian's meltdown on the radio following the Colts now-infamous handling of the Week Sixteen game against the New York Jets in 2009, the Colts have blocked the call-in radio program named 'The Bill Polian Show' from Internet listeners. This show features Colts vice chairman Bill Polian, and it allows regular Colts fans to call-in and ask him questions which he, frequently, gets annoyed answering. It is the only Colts content that is not streamed live on the net. Thus, because Colts fans outside the Indianapolis area cannot listen in on the show, we provide highlights from the program, which often include Bill Polian saying things he later claims he did not say. However, since the Colts and Mr. Polian do not provide fans or media with recordings of the show, you'll just have to take our word that what we write below is indeed what Mr. Polian actually said. Hope you enjoy.
Stampede Blue live-tweets the highlights while the show is happening. You can follow Stampede Blue on Twitter at @stampedeblue.
Unlike previous shows, where Bill Polian seems content to torture his listeners with generic platitudes and useless jargon about how the winless Colts just need to 'get back to fundamentals,' this week's Bill Polian Show was actually informative.
We already posted the news, via Polian on his show last night, that the Colts plan to bring back Peyton Manning late in the year so that he can practice with the team, not necessarily play in a real game. It's for this reason that they have kept him on the active roster. Should they need to I.R. Peyton, he would not be able to practice with the team this year.
We also got some interesting info on the future of the Colts Tampa-2 defense along with Bill's surprisingly honest perspective on why the Colts are the worst team in football. Here are the highlights from last night's show:
- Polian said he is frustrated and angry that the team is so bad. However, in a very un-Jedi way, he said that anger can lead to positive things.
- Despite being in last place, Bill Polian said the Colts talent and the quality of the head coach are not 'at the bottom of the barrel.'
- Polian praised Jim Caldwell several times during last night's show. He even channeled former president George W. Bush circa 2005 by saying Jim Caldwell was 'doing a heckuva job.'
- For Polian, the loss to the Titans was a 'microcosm of the season.' However, he felt the running game was good and the passing game was 'decent.'
- Polian said the Colts DTs played well and did not 'wallow around' like they did against Saints two weeks ago.
- Polian said the losing now, and the reasons this team is losing, can be traced back to the playoff loss to the Jets last season. He also called out kick returner Joe Lefeged, though not by name.
- Polian took shoots at someone (a reporter, I think) who wrote recently 'you don't get credit for playing hard.' Polian also dedicated some time to say that media draft experts 'have no standing' with him.
- Polian thinks his team's front seven 'can play with anyone.' [Side Note: Bill wasn't saying this after the team's 62-7 loss to the Saints two weeks ago]
- When asked by a caller about Curtis Painter, Polian answered that the Colts 'have no complaints at all' with him.
- The subject of the draft came up on the show, and Polian decided to dedicate a portion to making a bunch of generalizations about the old Manning v. Leaf debates in 1998. He then went into a tirade about how media draft experts suck. 'Those people, in my eyes, have no standing,' Polian also said the Colts made the final decision to draft Manning roughly two weeks before the 1998 NFL Draft.
- As previously reported, Polian said the Colts are keeping Manning on active roster in case he can PRACTICE at end of year. They almost IRed him last week after Seth Olsen broke his hand.
- A caller asked about the Tampa-2 defense and if it no longer works in today's NFL. Polian answered that the Tampa-2 should get the opponent's offense off field on 3rd and 6 or greater '75% of the time.' Colts are no where near that percentage.
- Polian stated he is 'open' to changing defense away from Tampa-2 after this season based on the Colts current personnel.
- Polian: Many of the Colts young CBs are breaking down and not making plays because of bad technique. Re-iterated from last week that he is 'baffled' by the play of the corners.
Hope you enjoyed this week's recap. Remember, Stampede Blue does a live tweet event every Monday during The Bill Polian Show. Follow us at @stampedeblue on Twitter.

i just looked at our passes defended stats since 2002 and the results are shocking *maury povich voice*
passes defended #/nfl rank;
2011 28/23, 2010 54/31, 2009 68/21, 2008 48/31, 2007 62/29, 2006 149/32, 2005 166/31, 2004 193/22, 2003 168/32, 2002 180/30
what does it mean? we are like last every year is this a reflection of teams not passing against us or our CBs SS/FSs being terrible??
Funny, Maury Povich

"Baffled by cornerback play."
Are you serious BP? You honestly thought that Terrence Johnson and Jacob Lacey are better than Justin Tryon? This by far is the dumbest thing he’s said all year. Wow.
Oddly enough
I find some of this reassuring. Well, as reassured as one can be after losing half a season. It seems like maybe Bill can’t stick his thumbs in his ears and say “nah-nah-can’t hear you” forever.
The fact that he is willing to accept what his eyes are telling him makes me feel a lot better.
I quit reading the post at this point.......

So now he's open to the defense changing
I wonder why the team went away from what was working all season long in 2009. They absolutely went back to the Tampon 2 in the SB and it cost the Colts a ring. Coyer was not running soft zone bullshit in 2009. It was an attacking 4-3. Maybe they should’ve stuck with that since it was working.
It is at least nice to hear him be somewhat honest and realistic with his assessment of the team. Though I’m guessing that when media draft experts look at Polian’s drafts from 2007-2010, they decide he has no standing with them.

Tampa-2
It is a good type of defensive coverage, if you have the right personnel, as for the Colts, they never really had the best personnel to play Tampa-2. Wishful thinking Bill. The defensive strategy needs to be changed, a guy like Powers and Thomas can’t play Tampa-2. Especially without a good starting SS. If only Bob Sanders stayed healthy.
And calling out Joe Lefeged? That ain’t fair. It’s not like he’s Devin Hester or Ted Ginn Jr. The hell are you looking for? Plus, the blocking for Lefeged sucks just as much. From now on, I’d just knee every kick and fair catch every punt. The punt returns are just as bad and I’m always afraid of a fumble since no one seems to block the gunners.

And him running from the back of the endzone
is on coaching. A rookie returner is doing what he’s told. He’s not out there showboating trying to get on SportsCenter.
I'm confused...
Lefeged consistently ran the ball out from 8-10 yards deep in the end zone the ENTIRE game. Never once did he even sniff the 20 yard line. I’m cool with saying the first two are on the coaching staff for telling him to give it a shot. After that, I don’t buy the whole “he’s just a rookie” defense. Don’t get me wrong, the coaching staff sucks for not having a little sit-down with that fella… but a professional football player (rook or otherwise) should be able to figure that out that it’s not working.
And...
What’s his 40 time? Like 5.2? Not the fastest KO retuner in history that’s for sure. But to me that’s on Caldwell for letting him do that game after game and/or not replacing him with anyone else. I would be willing to sign for league minimum to take a knee on every KO and start the offense on the 20 every drive.

Blair's generally been the punt returner this year, when healthy
Lefeged replaced Blair on PR duty this past game when Blair went out

I think the Colts D-Backs
Have simply stopped jumping patterns. Nobody has enough confidence to play aggressively, we used to be a defense that bent, but also was near or at the top of the league in takeaways. This year, that particularly is NOT so. This defense is playing scared. Period.
One exception to the above....
The linebackers are not playing bad ball.
the middle is still wide open far too many times

that is a result of the soft cover 2 that the Colts play....
MLB has deep middle responsibility, which leaves the short middle open.
Takeaways
They’ve been near the bottom of the league for a few years straight, haven’t they?

Ominous
The comment by Bill P. that is most revealing is that he wants to see PM throw the football in practice by the end of the season. What does that tell a discerning fan?It tells me that Colts are contemplating not having PM back at QB.That 28 million $ bonus may not be given to PM.If they get the 1st pick AL is coming to INDY.PM will be gone.He will be traded or let go.Did anyone think that was even possible?
I think if Manning cannot perform he will retire.
He won’t get cut, he won’t get traded. He either can play or he can’t play. He’s not going to half-ass anything, and he’s not going to come back if he can’t be effective.

This has been speculated on plenty
Lots of writers and fans have brought up the possibility that Manning won’t be back. He had 3 neck/spine surgeries in 15 months and will be 37 in March. Of course it is a possibility.
I think this too....Manning knows what happen to Unitas
He idolizes Unitas. I don’t think he would a) like to tarnish his image like Unitas did or Farve did by ending their years with other teams and b) I feel that he really does care about this team, city and franchise and would not to hamstring Irsay with his contract if he can’t play.
Of course I hope he can come back. But in an odd way by NOT playing this year, he may actually have elevated his status as one of the best based on the theory that this team has been a pile of shit for so long and that he covered it up. So he can comfortably retire with everyone thinking this. The demise of the franchise was solely related to him not playing……(that’s what the history books will say maybe….)
Dear Diary, Kevin is so hot. Today he was raking the yard. God I wish he'd throw me into that pile of leaves.
Rolls Royce
You don’t get rid of it because it has a scratch on it. If PM gets released due to a disability and the Colts Draft AL, PM might stick around for a year or so to teach.

Retirement
Every QB thinks they’ll handle retirement well, and it always hits them before they think they are ready. The look in Manning’s eyes are not those of someone who will go quietly in the night. I’m saying he will try to play even if he isn’t 100% whether it is for us or against us.
Does anyone know of a good article that breaks down what we need if Manning does NOT come back? I know we have talked a ton about what we need if Manning comes back 100%… just wondering.
If Peyton doesn't comeback....
Well, I figure the next logical thing to do is gut the team and start fresh. Dallas Clark, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Gary Brackett, Ryan Diem, Reggie Wayne, Jeff Saturday, Joseph Addai, Melvin Bullitt, and of course Peyton Manning would all be gone. These are the oldest and highest paid players likeliest to be traded or released. After that the youth movement would begin and we start all over again.
And a fresh perspective from coaching staff
You never like to see a guy get fired, but Caldwell and his assistants are not the right coaches to lead this team moving forward. Player development has been lacking since Caldwell came in, fundamentals are now even poor, special teams is getting even worse (didn’t think it could, did you?) and the general conservative in-game decision making and in-gane adaptation and game planning has been garbage since SB XLIV too.

Agreed, they would gut the team and attempt to go with a QB in the first round and probably run painter the next year until the new QB was up to par. But what I mean is, we have good defensive ends, so it would make sense to keep Mathis. Build the line between them. Our secondary has been horrible for years, go after that position and improve. Obviously, with Manning gone, we would let Wayne and Saturday go. Resign Garcon and go after a stud receiver the following year.
I guess I am just curious, where we ‘suck’ the most and in what position… and if Manning were gone what would be the best course of action to making this an ‘elite’ team.
Next tough man up
If PM comes back, there is one name for a
Man like that: el Cid.
Players along the offensive have to toughen up. Players on DL the front seven, have to go for it even more. One losing season is enough. Two is unforgivable. Bill and the others have to tell them to get on their horse like el Cid and ride into Sunday to keep PM upright.

Trading Manning?
I don’t think the Colts organization has it in them to trade Manning. Let him go, maybe, but definitely not trade. There is too much pride in this organization. If they can’t bring themselves to cut busts like Hughes, Brown, and Painter (regardless of this play this year), how can you honestly think that the Colts organization will let Manning just go? We have a better chance of him retiring and returning as a coach.
Polian
Is really missing the boat when it comes to this team. The DBs are poorly coached and it shows in the games. I hope the entire coaching staff plus polians are sent packing. Hopefully, they can convince Ozzie Newsome to come run the organization!!!
In other news...
polian mentioned that WWII was just a “minor” issue and bragged how he instilled the cover 2 defense which won the war.

Playoff Timeout?
“Polian said the losing now, and the reasons this team is losing, can be traced back to the playoff loss to the Jets last season.”
I think he refering to Jim Caldwell calling timeout with less than 40 seconds left which allowed Rex Ryan and Sanchez to regroup the team, complete a pass to Braylon Edwards (who made a great catch) and kick a fieldgoal to win the game.
As I was driving home from that playoff loss I was listening to Polians post game comments and he said something to the effect that he would correct the problem.
Maybe if there was not a lockout Caldwell would be gone before the season started, as looking at the teams body language, he lost the locker room that day.
