When I look back at the Peyton Manning era of football in Indianapolis, I feel sorry for our beloved quarterback. It is apparent to me now more than ever that we have been a one man show in Indianapolis for a long time now. I had heard rumors and grumblings that this was the case before this season, but wrote that off largely in part because I felt those things were being said out of hate and discontent.
Look at how awesome Peyton Manning is. Look at how hard he works, what he sacrifices, and how many NFL players praise his abilities. I can really only think of one NFL player who sincerely thought Peyton was a bad quarterback, and that was a kicker who couldn’t handle his liquor.
ave had a good quarterback and that is it for a little while now. Don’t get me wrong, we have had some really good players on this team, but look at what those good players are doing without Peyton this year. He has even affected our defense, we have been nonexistent in all three phases of football this year. Where does this come from? What has caused this problem?
To me, when all three phases of a football team fall apart for ten games in a row and fail to shine in any real way for at least a minute or two, it screams leadership. What have our coaches, management and front office been doing? Have they been sitting back and enjoying the success a draft pick made thirteen years ago brought them? Do the really feel like they have been doing a good job and are very surprised with the performance of the team this year? Whatever the case may be, we do not have the recipe for any kind of success right now.
hy would you draft Andrew Luck after this season? What did he do to deserve that? This college player deserves not to be thrown into a house that is threatening to fall down all around him. We did that to Peyton and he didn’t deserve it either. One Super Bowl win with our quarterback? Look at how many first round eliminations we have had, it is sickening. I love Tony Dungy to death, but he was not a good fit at head coach for our team. I am not saying he is a bad head coach or anything derogatory about him in any way shape or form. I am saying that he was not a good ingredient for our teams recipe for success. Case in point, look at our current head coach, Jim Caldwell. He almost never shows emotion and when he does it is so rare that people make a point to make it known that he actually does show emotions occasionally. Tony Dungy was a little more emotional than that but not by much. He made it a point to keep his cool and not put anyone on the spot. Don’t get me started on Jim Caldwell, he is just the residual that was left behind from the Tony Dungy era. He is a nice guy too, but again, not a good ingredient for our recipe.
We are in disaster mode and no one wants to say it. Instead we focus on the future of our quarterback position. It doesn’t matter. If we have Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning playing for us next year, we won’t have success because our system is broken. One man should not be accountable for almost all of our success. We should have a football team in Indianapolis not a singular football player. Again, I am not saying the players currently playing football for the Colts are bad, I am saying that they have been failed by the coaches and management of this team.
hat I am not sure of is whether or not the team needs new coaches or new coaches and a front office. I like Bill Polian a lot, he has done amazing things for this organization. Have his picks done well the past five or six years? No, they have not. However, if you are not Peyton Manning, then you really haven’t been successful the past few years anyway. With the coaching we have now it is really horrible to determine who is not a talented player and who is a talented player being led nowhere by a bad coaching staff. Wouldn’t it be amazing to get a new coaching staff and some of our recent “busts” take off? I know that is far fetched but a fan can dream.
My point is this, we need to focus on leadership in the front office and on the coaching side of the house in Indianapolis. We have to have the right players for the right coaches to have success and right now, we do not that perfect match. I would love to see Jeff Fisher come coach our team. Does anyone else remember him wearing a Peyton Manning jersey? Talk about a match for success.
