Recap Of The Bill Polian Show: Week 14, 2011
After Bill Polian's meltdown on the radio following the Colts now-infamous handling of the Week Sixteen game against the New York Jets in 2009, the Colts have blocked the call-in radio program named 'The Bill Polian Show' from Internet listeners. This show features Colts vice chairman Bill Polian, and it allows regular Colts fans to call-in and ask him questions which he, frequently, gets annoyed answering. It is the only Colts content that is not streamed live on the net. Thus, because Colts fans outside the Indianapolis area cannot listen in on the show, we provide highlights from the program, which often include Bill Polian saying things he later claims he did not say. However, since the Colts and Mr. Polian do not provide fans or media with recordings of the show, you'll just have to take our word that what we write below is indeed what Mr. Polian actually said. Hope you enjoy.
Stampede Blue live-tweets the highlights while the show is happening. You can follow Stampede Blue on Twitter at @stampedeblue.
Welcome to this week's installment of Bill Polian's foot meeting Bill Polian's mouth. This week, the Colts vice chairman decided to use his weekly call-in radio show to take a shot at his punter, praise the play of his 32nd ranked defense, admit error in thinking Curtis Painter can play quarterback, and say that his 'fervent hope is that Jim [Caldwell]'s job is not in jeopardy.'
All kinds of Polian silliness was on display this week, folks, and because I've been late in getting you updates the last two weeks, we present you the recap... now!
- Polian said that, against the Ravens, the Colts showed 'marked improvement' on defense. All players, save the defensive tackles, played well on D. Polian also repeatedly praise new defensive coordinator Mike Murphy.
- Playing rookie tackle Anthony Castonzo one-on-one with Terrell Suggs was a mistake, Polian said.
- As banged up as secondary is, Polian said he was proud of how well defense has played.
- Polian praised the Colts effort and hustle against the Ravens. Guess he watched a different game than the one Baltimore Sun writer Mike Preston saw.
- Polian praised rookie safety Joe Lefged for his coverage and his return duties.
- The Colts have 'a lot of good young players.' - Bill Polian.
- Polian said both Robert Mathis and Pat Angerer should get voted to the Pro Bowl.
- When asked by, I believe, host Bob Lamey as to what the team needs to do to improve, Polian said the offense must clean-up the offensive line play and they must run the ball more. Offense does not have 'big play' type players, like in the past.
- As part of the 'what needs to improve,' Polian singled out punter Pat McAfee and said he must get better as a directional and strategic punter. McAfee didn't seem to take kindly to Polian's criticism, and his response is here.
- Another week, another show where Bill Polian said Donald Brown played well. He had 28 yards at 3.1 a carry against the Ravens.
- Polian: I'm 'heartened' by how well the defense played. Polian then noted that the coaches apparently weren't so happy. The defense did surrender 24 points before the Ravens offense let up in the fourth quarter. Polian also said the Colts 'won the second half.' For him, this shows that the team has 'good young players.'
- Answering a caller, Polian said he expects Darren Evans to play more, though not as a kick returner. Polian thinks Evans is too slow to return kicks.
- A caller said the Polian himself was the 'No. 1 reason' the Colts are 0-13.' He then asked if the Colts planned to change their back-up QB policy going forward. Polian answered that the front office thought Curtis Painter could step in and do the job if Peyton went down. However, the Colts made a 'poor judgment' on Curtis Painter. 'I take responsibility for that,' Polian said.
- FYI, back in October, Polian was crowing about Painter's play.
- Polian: It makes me feel bad that good players and good coaches are suffering on the Colts because of decisions we made in the front office.
- Polian said that had Colts known Peyton would miss the 2011 season, they would have drafted a QB in the first round in the 2011 NFL Draft. Polian chose not to say the name, but added if he did say it, fans would recognize the player. To me, it sounded like he meant Andy Dalton.
- Polian: The next backup QB CANNOT run same offense Peyton Manning does when he plays.
- Polian said the Colts were planning to draft T.J. Yates in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The Texans took him earlier. Polian said that the Colts should have taken Yates earlier. Ironically, Houston drafted Yates in the 5th Round using the draft pick the Colts sent to the Washington Redskins in the trade for Ben Ijalana. Ijalana has bee out since Week Four with a knee injury.
- Polian: 'I'm confident that this season is an aberration.'
- Polian: I'm happy with our 2011 draft. 'We got five really good players.'
- Polian praised the play of Colts linebackers. Said Philip Wheeler, Kavell Conner, and Pat Angerer are 'as good as any we've had' in Indy. I guess that's nice knowing you, Garry Brackett.
- Drake Nevis might be 'keystone' to build defensive line around, said Polian.
- Polian said the Colts need to get better along the front and need more efficient play at corner.
- Polian said that if the Colts draft a QB in the first round next year, and that QB plays, the Colts 'will struggle.' FYI: The Colts are currently 0-13.
- Interesting moment occurred when a caller asked Polian if a 'healthy Peyton Manning' was the 'ideal situation' for the Colts in 2012. Polian then chose not to answer the question. Instead, he said that, 'We don't know what all the options are.'
- Polian refused to comment on Andrew Luck even though Luck even though A) He's commented on Luck before on his radio show, and B) Luck has announced he will enter the NFL Draft. Polian also chose to take a few shots at 'draft gurus.'
- Bob Kravitz tweeted this during Polian's show: Yo, Bill Polian, Andrew Luck is coming out. He announced it. Signed, a guru/wiseman. Sorry, he's such an ass.
- A caller asked Polian if Caldwell will be fired and then asked why it took so long to go with Dan Orlovsky at quarterback. Polian responded, 'My fervent hope is that Jim's job is not in jeopardy because my fervent hope is that we don't go 0-16, and we're doing everything we can to try and avoid that.'
- Polian then said the coaches made the decision to bench Painter. For Polian, Painter's play was 'really pretty good' in his first four games
Thanks to all those who followed along tonight. You can follow along too @stampedeblue.

he praises painter and you get mad
then later he realizes painter wasnt good enough to run the offense which means hes admitting he was wrong before and you hate on him some more
pick a side there are plenty of reasons to hate him stop bullshitting stuff. If you hate him for praising Painter you cant turn around and hate him for admitting Painter isnt the right guy.

Polian can do no right in Brad's eyes
so don’t expect any praise

Im not asking for praise of Polian of any sort
just dont crucify him on both sides of the fence. If youre mad he thought Painter was good you cant be mad when he agrees he was wrong about it all BBS has to say is:
“Polian finally admits Painter wasnt the best option and couldnt get it done”
Not FYI let me link back to my own story where i bash him for thinking Painter was a good option
So going 1-15 is good enough for Caldwell to keep his job?
Sky high expectations in Indianapolis!

Another brilliant edition of the Bill Polian Comedy hour
Has anyone heard the who is projected to fall in line for the Colts second round pick? (assuming the comedian doesn’t trade it for crap talent)
Dear Morgan Burke:
I'm cold on gamedays.

For once, I think I'm in complete agreement with BBS on something
Not only has Pat McAfee been consistently great at sparing us TDs on kickoffs by getting touchbacks, but how many TDs has he saved on punts by making the tackle? How many punters do that? Never mind the fact that his punts are great. The only ones guys are able to return is when he has a hopelessly long field.
Didn’t care to comment about a healthy Peyton Manning?
Defense played well?
Colts won the 2nd half?
He’s either a moron, senile, figured no one was listening or he’s completely lost his mind.
I can understand not saying anything to add fuel to all the QB nonsense. There is too much yet to be determined to say anything about that. And Jacob Lacey played well yesterday; as well as he could within his capabilities/deficiencies.
Just about everything else sounds like he hasn’t been watching the same football games as everyone else.

Oh yeah...
I forgot probably the biggest dumb assed comment of them all. The Offense does not have ‘big play’ type players, like in the past.
That’s all the offense has! They’re not making any big plays, but they’re ’big play ’ players!
Just to note
McAfee is still pretty young for a Punter, the younger guys generally get stuck in with tackles and then drop off when they get older. Not saying he’s not doing a good job, just pointing it out that it might not last for much longer.
Hank Baskett IS A WANKER
Polian: It makes me feel bad that good players and good coaches are suffering on the Colts because of decisions we made in the front office. FINALLY BBS can give the victory finger at those on here that kept saying otherwise.
Polian said that if the Colts draft a QB in the first round next year, and that QB plays, the Colts ‘will struggle.’ Someone needs to tell BP that we cannot go 0-17.
Polian singled out punter Pat McAfee and said he must get better as a directional and strategic punter. First liquored up kickers now liquored up non directional punters I guess.
Polian said the Colts were planning to draft T.J. Yates in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Yeah he would have saved the season.
My fervent hope is that Jim’s job is not in jeopardy because my fervent hope is that we don’t go 0-16, and we’re doing everything we can to try and avoid that.’ Yeah because his job is safe if we go 1-15. Sounds a lot like BP setting the stage for the call of General Caldwell.

I don't understand
the dislike for BBS. Its not like he is telling lies. He calls out the inept front office. Also, does anyone know how I can get running updates on my phone? Is there a way to get new posts from this site to my phone??

One option
Download an RSS reader and subsribe to this feed
Depends on what you consider a lie Dito29
BBS says Luck wont want to play behind Manning
Luck says he’d like to play behind an established QB
He says Manning doesnt want Luck (or to draft a new QB)
Manning never said anything of the sort
He says its a fact Manning wont be on the team next year
Obviously thres no way to know that and to say its already true is incorrect
and BBS also commonly states that people that dont agree with particular opinions of his are idiots or stupid or morons
I doubt that is true as well
those are just some recent things that stir up the dislike

I am relieved to hear we are much better than I thought
as I was thinking we were not even putting an NFL worthy team on the field.

Polian recap
Thank you for publishing the recap of Polian show again. I used to listen via my computer prior to 2010. I think Polian should be given credit for A/ having a weekly show
B/for continuing show in a year like this one. I am also gratified that he at least shows some remorse for his players and coaches due to his poor performance. However, its my belief he should apologize to the fans, weve been cheated out of at least 3 years of high quality football. I would like to put this in a different perspective then has been stated on this site. The primary responsibiity of a GM, whether in sports or any business is to ensure their plant(s) are operating efficiently enough to carry out the business plans of their owners or board of directors. The GM accomplishes this task by assuring the companys greatest asset is well protected and maintained so they can operate at peak efficiency. In football most of the time, that is the QB, and the protection is offensive line. For years the Colts had a top offensive line and Manning stayed healthy. Not only were the starters good, but when one got hurt, the line didnt miss a beat when players like Peko or Frietas came in. The didnt have a power line like the old Raiders or Steelers, but they protected as well as any, and would open some huge holes on stretch plays or counter plays at times. After the 2006 season, for some unknown reason to me, the offensive line became less of a priority. I dont blame Polian for Ugoh, after all he was projected by most to be a future star player. However I do blame Polian for the rest of the line, trying to fill with low draft choices or undrafted free agents. This degradation of the line resulted in Manning throwing more passes instead of throwing less. Obviously he aborbed many more hits then he had previously.
Mannings injury is not bad luck, if it wasnt neck, it would have been something else.
By failing to protect their most important asset, the Colts FO has robbed the fans of at least 3 years of high quality football. If Manning retires as I think he will, I would like to see Polian apologize for playing a major role in shortening his career.
Our system
Look, Polian spent a decade building a team around Tony Dungy’s defensive specs and around Peyton Manning’s offensive brilliance. The players matched the scheme and we won a lot. W/o Dungy and w/o Peyton, it is impossible to win with the players we have. Polian said that the next QB won’t play the same system as Peyton and we are proving that NOBODY can play the same system as Peyton. I think Polian did his job well and he is taking an awful lot of criticism from this fanbase, from the media and from other teams. I think it is sad that hemight go out like this instead of going out a winner. Some of you say that it is his fault, but I think teams don’t stay great forever and they eventually fizzle out and then eventually retool. I think that’s where we are.
How
is it impossible to have a backup plan? Polian on this show even admitted the next backup will have to run a different system. The backup qb should’ve been running a different system all the time then. They are paid to know this and have the contingency plan in place. I don’t subscribe to the idea that they are just learning now that they can’t throw anyone in there behind Peyton and expect them to perform the same.
thanks
for publishing this so i don’t have to waste an hour of my time listening to his crap… now I just waste 3 minutes of my time reading it instead =)

I'm beginning to believe this more and more
A. Irsay will not part with Manning if Manning can still play
B. Polian wants to have a guarantee at backup and a QB of the future.
C. New rookie wage scale makes it much easier to carry both.
D. Colts will begin to shed high salaries over the next few years and will have an influx of young talent which will be paid at rookie wage scales to allow for Manning’s large contract.
Manning may even restructure his deal if possible although I doubt it.
Most importantly, Caldwell needs to be replaced by an actual NFL caliber HC that can bring in elite coordinators and get this thing rolling again.
I don't always drink beer....but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
