Back to basic Colts football . . .my mock draft 2.0 with trade of 1st pick to Cleveland

I am sticking to my guns that Peyton returns and we trade the #1 overall choice to Cleveland. In return, we get their two first rounders, their 2nd rounder this year and QB Colt McCoy. Colt becomes an instant upgrade over Painter, but isn't necessarily the heir apparent to Peyton (although he could possibly develop into that). Besides, with a name like Colt, it's just good Karma that he IS a Colt.

Okay, my picks (note: I have referred to Draft Scout and Walter Football to make my choices):

1(7) OT Riley Reiff Iowa 6-6 300 4.94 A left tackle, allows Castonzo to move to the right side (Ijalana to RG)

1(21) CB Chase Minnifield Virginia 6-0 185 4.49 Immediate starter and huge upgrade

2(33) SS Mark Barron Alabama 6-2 218 4.56 Immediate starter at strong safety, helps Bethea a lot in run support

2(39) OG Kevin Zeitler Wisconsin 6-4 312 5.21Competition or upgrade at LG for Reitz

3(65 NT Josh Chapman Alabama 6-1 310 5.21 An upgrade over Mookie Johnson

4(97) QB Nick Foles Arizona 6-5 235 5.01 Never hurts to have a quality QB as third teamer to develop

5(129?) RB Vic Ballard Miss. St 5-11 215 4.60 Another tough hard-assed running back

6(161?) CB Tashaun Gipson Wyoming 6-0 195 4.49 A sleeper who is one tough cookie and very athletic, good value

6(comp) Center Grant Garner Okla. St. 6-3 292 5.19 A Jeff Saturday clone and competition for Pollak

7 Kicker- Caleb Sturgis Florida 6-3 198 Big leg. Insurance in case Adam V decides to hang 'em up.

My focus was on the secondary and offensive line, while looking for size and toughness (aka. durability). Peyton automatically upgrades the offense, but I would make sure to provide him with an outstanding group in front of him. I look forward to your comments and input. Fire away fellow Colts Fans !!

I like it.

I like Colt McCoy, I liked watching him play at UT, but I don’t see him going anywhere as a NFL QB. I want him to succeed but I can’t see it happening.

I’d like Matt Kalil or Jonathan Martin over Riley Reiff, but I think Kalil mnight be a top 3 pick and Martin might go before the 7th pick. I like all the rest of the picks, except Nick Foles. I’d rather have another CB taken. I like this mock draft, but I think it’s unlikely the Browns are willing to give up two 1st rounders, a 2nd round and Colt McCoy. It’d be more likely for them to give their 1st round this year, and a 1st round of next year.

Kalil

Won’t make it to #7. He’ll go to St. Louis at #2

wow

that was horrible

1) colt mccoy is horrible

2) not drafting luck is horrible

3) drafting that ot is horrible

anything that doesnt get us andrew luck is horrible

I can see something like this happening

minus colt mccoy or a third rounder instead of second round pick with mccoy. The only thing I think will be different is that they will take a WR in the second round instead of the SS. I’d also look for them to take Ball State’s Sean Baker in a later round for their safety. He might be a sleeper and definitely worth taking a look at. He’s made the All-Mac team (I know, probably not that hard) the past two years.

Just a bit of clarification about Colt

I really do not see him as a viable heir to Peyton’s throne, but for sure he would instantly improve the backup QB situation over Painter and/or Orlovsky. Also, while I attempted to improve the d-line as well as secondary on defense, I feel a GREAT o-line in front of Peyton controls a lot of clock and does to other teams what they scheme to do to Peyton (keep him on the sideline). Noles, IMHO, has more upside than McCoy and is a possibility to groom as 3rd string. But, thank you guys for your insights so far. I’d much rather discuss this stuff than who needs to be fired.

Good mock wrong picks

If you trade the pick you have to take RG3 at that spot not a linemen. Oh and we don’t need Foles either.

by ahops18 on Dec 14, 2011 7:22 PM EST reply actions

RG3 . . .really ?

Do you truly believe that his skillset transfers well to the NFL ? I guess I haven’t bought into that as yet, but am open to be persuaded. Also, I gotta admit I have never watched the guy play a single down, so maybe I would see him in a better light should I do so.

by oldecoltsfan on Dec 14, 2011 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

he looks legit.

But… I still don’t see why Cleveland would even execute the trade. They still have a shot at RG3 or Barkley and they still need plenty of non qb talent on the team.

Sorry colts fans, I really don’t see us being able flip Luck for a top 3 QB and a bevy of picks.

colt mccoys

skillset doesnt transfer to the nfl. so your 1st trade is horrible

by omahacolt on Dec 14, 2011 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

nope

we have no idea if manning will ever play again

take luck and keep him. its the only option

by omahacolt on Dec 15, 2011 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yes he is legit

RG3 has MORE passing yards thsi year then Luck more pasing TD’s, albiet one more, and he had 7 more rush TD’s them Luck at nine,

RG3 is form a military family, his dad served in Iraq, so hes DISCIPLEND! AND hes ALREADY graduated from college,(or will at end of this semster) so hes more than smart enough

no

RGIII does not fit into our scheme.

I’d say this trade is possible but I doubt it happens. We don’t make major moves (trades/free agency)

I agree. I’d love RGIII over Luck.

nah, draft Luck

New FO if irsay has the balls and definitely a new coaching staff.

by mlc2656 on Dec 14, 2011 9:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I say if...

…we can’t find a partner in the top 4 that wants to move up to get Luck. Then we draft Luck. If we can pick up a 2nd (or future 1st) and some other mid-round pick and still be a lock to get RGIII, I’m very, VERY happy with RGIII. Plus it might be easier to swallow him sitting behind Manning for a year or two.

F*ck the scheme, RG3 throws a better deep pass anyways

so whats teh difference, schems can be changed AND WILL be chagned if we get a new QB, doesnt matter if its Luck or RG3

I'm not so sure that's true.

Stafford can throw deep. RGIII actually had some recievers to throw deep to. Luck really didn’t.

Mock Drafts

are so hard becasue once you get past the first couple overall picks things can go any which way. Theres no way to predict whose going to be there. About all you can do is hope for a player in a certain position.

With that said, theres no reason to waste a pick on another QB and Kicker. Those would be a waste. Pat wants to eventually do all the kciking and as for QB…in your mock here, we’d be getting another QB.

by Coltsfan8000 on Dec 14, 2011 7:48 PM EST reply actions

Mock Drafts . . .are so hard @Coltsfan 8000

You are quite correct. I wholeheartedly agree with your well-taken point. While I have posted specific names, they mostly represent traits at positions on the football field as well as the draft process that I wish for my Colts to bring into the fold.
Not sure it’s wise for Mcafee to handle ALL kicking chores. Lots of eggs in one basket.

by oldecoltsfan on Dec 14, 2011 8:00 PM EST reply actions

TERRIBLE

This is awful. McCoy has career back up written all over him. Kalil has already announced he is returning to USC although it is not yet official. Luck is the best QB prospect in 30 years and this is what we get?

Take Luck and be happy for the next 15 years.

by javen on Dec 14, 2011 9:30 PM EST reply actions

depends...

If the FO believes he will be a top 5 qb, they have to take him. Winning now isn’t the only factor.

by mlc2656 on Dec 15, 2011 8:08 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Winning now isn't going to happen.

Freeney and Mathis look pretty good, but the rest of the team is garbage. Most of our key free agents don’t look to be worth the money they’ll expect. I think Reggie probably has a couple more solid years, but I don’t see him being worth what we’ll pay him over probably the next 4 years. Clark can’t stay on the field….Manning is unlikely to change that. Our secondary consists of a solid starter in Bethea, an acceptable starter in Powers and garbage. We have one LB that is consistent enough to start, and he’s really just adequate. We have a gimicky rookie DT that has missed time and will be worthless if our bookends begin to breakdown. Otherwise our interior D-line is constant garbage. Our O-line has been Jeff Saturday and an endless revolving door of…revolving doors since Glenn left. And our running backs aren’t dynamic and look even worse behind our o-line…where they almost always end up…behind our seive line.

Manning made up for alot of these deficiencies over the last couple of years. Health, good fortune, and refined skills allowed a lack of talent to be covered up on the ’09 SB run.

We need to rebuild. No point in hoping for the best. If we keep Manning and trade the pick several things must happen.

1. We have to get a lockdown Left Tackle
2. We have to add another legit receiving threat that can stay healthy
3. We have to spend alot of picks and money on defense
4. Manning has to take a HUGE pay cut.

Otherwise we won’t make it past the 1st round of playoffs and we will have completely wasted the one good thing that comes from such an awful season.

Good conversation, folks !

Thanks for the interesting insights. It was fun to kick around some football stuff.

I like trading the pick for first 2 rounders

I just dont like who you picked

First We dont NEED an OT in the first round this year , we got 2 with our first 2 picks LAST year.

If we get pick #7 we draft Alshon Jeffrey or Malcolm Floyd (4 PM’s final run, cuz Reggie WONT be back next year)

I agree with Pick #21 though, it could and should be used on the best CB or S on the board

Malcom Floyd is already under contract in San Diego.

I’m sure you meant Michael Floyd. I don’t know if he’s got the speed to be worthy of a top 10 pick…but he is a beat. Reminds me of some sort of slightly poor man’s Hines Ward/Larry Fitzgerald/Roddy White hybrid. Just a good reciever that can do it all.

He’s a very good reciever and even better open field blocker.

I’d love to find a way to draft him.
