Merry Clinchmas?
WNDE's Derek Schultz ran some numbers last night on tie-breakers between the Colts, Rams, and Vikings, and it seems that barring a win in both games, the Colts have the #1 pick wrapped up.

over on CF
we have a poster that ran some numbers himself (I wonder if that’s where Derek actually got “his” numbers) and yes, as long as the Colts lose to the Texans, they are guaranteed the #1 pick. The SOS margins are too much in the Colts favor at this point and there are too many teams playing each other that cancel out any ground Minny or STL could gain.
As long as the Colts lose to Houston they are free to kick the crap out of the Jags with no ill effects. Unless 2-14 = Caldwell keeping his job.
didn't know someone else had already posted it
would’ve saved me the trouble. i think the reason it’s so one-sided is because Green Bay accounts for two games on Minnesota’s schedule, and the Rams’ two equal-standing NFC opponents ended up being the two best in the Packers and Saints. also, having a weak third-place team (Jacksonville) distances the Colts even further.

So, where do people stand on rooting against one's team in order to secure a better pick?
Personally, I want them to lose. At least this week. Secure the top pick and (hopefully) the end of Caldwell’s reign of terror.
I wouldn't do that for an entire season
but when it’s down to 2 games like this it just makes sense. That type of rah rah just get a win mindset has no place this Thursday.

Lol.
Tell that to the people who paid good money to go to the game on Thursday a/k/a me.

I wouldn't spend your money
on the Houston game unless you just really want to pay $10 for beer.
Then again I haven’t been to a game since they threw the perfect season vs. the Jets in 09.
You never EVER root for your team to lose. Wins, especially in the NFL, are too difficult to come by. We’ve been spoiled over the last decade and people are forgetting how to root for a bad team and are succumbing to pessimism rather than looking for the silver lining. This team is not NEARLY as bad as the Colts were in the 80s and 90s.
That said, I think we still lose Thursday because we have no quarterback and Houston will be pissed because they laid and egg against Carolina.
My brother feels that way too....
So I try not to talk about this subject with him. The “our fans are spoiled” argument is wrong. How about “our fans are smart” and they want Andrew Luck for Christmas. Otherwise, this season will suck with little payoff. I want Luck, with or without Manning, and I am concerned they will beat TJ Yates, especially without Andre Johnson. And Blaine Gabbert is no better than Orlovsky, either.

It’s not just about Luck (though this season does remind me of the Vinny Testaverde Derby). It’s about how a lot of people have been acting, especially on this site. The ridiculous venom thrown at the front office and then calling people stupid or ignorant when they disagree or offer a differing opinion which doesn’t make Bill Polian out to be the bad guy. It’s about always looking for what’s wrong with the team rather than what is going about. It’s about ignoring when a player develops and changes the storyline.
This is a nearsighted and childish way to look at things
I know you probably feel strongly about this but I usually hear “I JUST WANNA WIN” in a whiny adolescent voice when I read these kinds of opinions.
In a year when the max number of wins we’re capable of is 3, it doesn’t matter that wins are hard to come by. We don’t need them, don’t benefit from them, and shouldn’t want them. They don’t help the team at all. Wins at this point make the Colts worse as an organization.
I remember the Colts when they were bottom-feeders in the league. I remember the Dome being half full on a good day. I remember “Lord Help Out Colts” Hearing people say the Colts should lose when they spent so many years being bad shows me a lack of respect for the team, the players, and history.
This is just me, and I’m certainly neither whiner nor adolescent, but I can never root for my team to lose. If they do, fine, but I will always cheer for them to win.
Uh -
On 18to88, unless I completely misread it, Nate posted that we’ve clinched pretty much no matter what – EVEN if we win Thursday night? I think it was based on strength of schedule. Did I misread?
They've clinched so long as they don't win the next two.
If the Colts win two and Rams and Viks lose two, Colts will get the 3rd pick.
So, let’s just get this over with Thursday night and lose.
Yeah....
Did you expect this site to give 18to88 credit?

That doesnt' even make sense
You are just bitching for the sake of bitching now. Stop being such a brat.
Both of these games are winnable.
Fortunately or unfortunately. Look at their QB’s and Houston may rest starters?

Division Champion Houston Texans
Hi My name is Jack, why don't you help me off?
Confused
I was pretty sure that the SOS was based on previous year rank of teams not this year and in that case St. Louis would be 1, Vikings 2, and Colts 3. Has anyone else heard that?
Simple:
This year’s SOS will be “last year’s SOS” come April next year.

Andre Johnson will be out on Thursday.
It is absolutely vital that we lose. Winning could set us back a decade.
