Colts Mock Draft

Hey guys. I'm kinda a draft junkie, and I recently put together a somewhat unorthodox mock draft for the Colts and posted it on Mocking The Draft. They can tear it up all they want, but I thought I would post it here and hear what you all have to say about since you all are more familiar with the Colts than the average reader or commenter on Mocking the Draft. I've assumed the Colts are picking first, despite the small possibility that we win out. Anyway, the picks and justifications are after the jump. Please let me know what you think.

Star-divide

1st Round - Andrew Luck - QB - Boring pick. For a while, I had hoped this pick would be traded to help restock the roster, but I just don't think that is a possibility anymore. Luck is the future of Indianapolis, whether we want him to be or not.

2nd Round - Dwight Jones - WR - This actually might be a little low for the wide receiver out of UNC, but I love him for the Colts. Jones uses his size well, has good acceleration and speed, and compares favorably to Greg Little, who, despite the situation in Cleveland, has been more successful than could be hoped for. His potential as a run-blocker, while not yet developed, makes him valuable to a team that is transitioning to a more run-heavy offense. The Colts have never had a receiver quite like Jones, and with the numerous soon-to-be free agents among our wide receiver corp, I think he would be a great pick.

3rd Round - Dontari Poe - DT - While the secondary remains a concern within the defense, the Colts lack of depth at defensive tackle is alarming. Apart from Antonio Johnson and Drake Nevis, the group is extremely underwhelming. Picking a defensive tackle as powerful Poe could do wonders in shoring up our defensive line and eliminating some of the double teams that our edge rushers face.

4th Round - Tommy Streeter - WR- I continue to see wide receiver as a major issue on this team. Wayne and Gonzalez are probably on their way out, due to desire for one last big paycheck and injury concerns respectively. Tommy Streeter fits the mold of wide receivers I hope the Colts continue to pursue: big receivers who can be successful against the improving pass defenses of the AFC South and could be successful even without an excellent quarterback throwing to them. With his size, speed, and potential, Streeter could have been a high round pick next year, and the Colts should take advantage of a bargain by picking him up now.

5th Round - Rokevious Watson - OL - Watson is a large offensive lineman who can play both OG and RT. Picking Watson would add some depth and versatility to our offensive line, where our players our often injured. If he manages to pan out as a RT, it would enable the Colts to move Ijalana to guard, a more natural position for him. If he can only be played as a guard, he could displace Jamey Richard, who is absolutely terrible, and eventually replace the aging Diem.

6th Round - Trumaine Johnson - SS/FS - Time to address some of the secondary concerns now. Johnson can play safety and cornerback in the Colts defense, adding some versatility and depth. He's a solid player whose stock has dropped some due to character concerns, but with the drafting of Delone Carter and Chris Rucker last year, the Colts' front office has shown their willingness to take some risks in later rounds.

7th Round - Asa Jackson - CB - A player similar in size to other Colts cornerbacks such as Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey, Jackson separates himself from the rest with his speed and athleticism. Although his his play is not always consistent and tackling technique could be improved, Jackson has the speed and fluidity to match up with speedy receivers and to play closer up to the line than most Colts cornerbacks are able to. He also could serve as a kick returner and special teams player, a consistent area of weakness for the Colts.

In this draft, the Colts have a great opportunity to build their offensive upon a young and talented offensive line strengthened by the additions of Ijalana, Reitz, and Castonzo. For too long the Colts have drafted skill players first, while disregarding the offensive line. Now, the Colts have the opportunity to continue to strengthen the offensive line in drafting Watson while drafting skill players in Jones and Streeter whose skills and abilities will be of greater use now that the quarterback, whoever he may be, will have time to allow the play to develop before throwing the ball to his receiver.

Some may argue that the defense has been neglected in this draft. To this, I have two counters. First, the Colts have always emphasized drafting first for the offense, then for the defense. While this may not be the best philosophy, I don't really see it changing this year. Secondly, the Colts defense has not been nearly as a bad as alleged this year. Right now, the Colts offense is terrible at sustaining drives and currently is last in the league in time of possession. The opposing offenses are just getting much more time with the ball than previous years, resulting in some pretty bad numbers for the Colts statistics. Additionally, without Manning, opposing teams are passing the ball more than they would have otherwise as it is no longer necessary to sustain long, run-oriented drives designed to minimize the time that Manning has the ball in his hands. This results in yards given up at a faster rate simply due to the greater efficiency, from a temporal perspective at least, of passing as compared to rushing. Still, it is clear that the defense needs improvement and I believe that in drafting Poe to strengthen the defensive line and Johnson and Jackson to shore up the secondary that some appreciable improvement will be gained in the defense. Combined with the return of injured players at the beginning of next year, although the Colts defense will certainly not be a powerhouse, I believe it will be enough to get the job done. Thanks for reading everybody.

UPDATE: I'll probably keep following up with a few of these over the next couple of months. Still, I'm going to try to make them a little interesting, as there's no fun in making a bunch of conventional, predictable mock drafts.

not bad

i would substitute a stud CB in the 2nd round and Ryan Broyles in the 4th but other than that at least you took luck and dealt with reality instead of pretending we will trade him

horrible draft

no wr’s before the 5th round.

way too many other issues

Thank you sir

Anything else you’d like to let me know before I stamp this post with “way too many other issues” and spend the next 29 hours analyzing that overabundance of wide receivers in rounds 1-4?

by coltsfan88 on Dec 20, 2011 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

nope

just get rid of the dumb wr picks and we should be ok

by omahacolt on Dec 20, 2011 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

Somewhat disagree

This draft is loaded with big, fast, strong WRs who project well, which is exactly what the Colts should be targeting. I don’t think the Colts need to use a high pick on a WR but def. a 3-4 rd pick because most, if not all, will be gone by the end of the 4th rd. I would really like to see them take a project WR in the 4th round because I don’t think there is a huge difference in upside in the WRs available after Blackmon, Jeffrey and possibly Floyd.

Broyles

My only issue with Broyles is I’m tired of the slot receivers. I think Wayne will be gone after this year and I think we need somebody to pair with Garcon on the outside.

by coltsfan88 on Dec 20, 2011 4:59 PM EST reply actions

i thought the same thing

but I think he’s a special talent that is unrecognized/ under rated and we can find a way to use him.

by coltsgolfbeer on Dec 20, 2011 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

I think you’re underestimating Broyles. Remember, Marvin wasn’t that big either.

by TrueBlue87 on Dec 20, 2011 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, no more slot receivers

The Colts need big, strong, fast athletes at WR. When slot receivers lose their speed, they cannot get seperation. When big WRs lose their speed, they still have the size to outman the CB for the ball. I like the Streeter pick in the 4th round. I think he could be a great project WR. If you re-sign Garcon and sign VJax (if he is available) to give Streeter time to develop, then you are looking at a great WR core for years to come.

by shastamasta on Dec 21, 2011 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

As long as the big, strong, fast WR knows how to run routes. Too many of those guys don’t know how to do that. At least Broyles does.

by TrueBlue87 on Dec 21, 2011 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

I'd agree that he is a great player

But I think that with Polian’s comments about the team being more complete with a fullback and the heaving focus on the running game (which will of course lighten some with Manning back) that we could be looking at fewer 3- wide-receiver sets in the future. We already have Collie and I just worry about how we would fit Broyles in with that direction we seem to be taking.

Poe could go in the first.

Doubt hell be there in the third.

Draft Position

It’s really going to depend on whether or not a gm or two fall in love with his size and potential. If one does, he could go really high. Still, he hasn’t been a huge producer at the collegiate level, so make of that what you will. Personally, I think his ceiling is high 2nd round. But yeah, I was being a little optimistic in him being available at 3.

I also posted this on mocking the draft, but I wanted to repost here

I would say this mock draft neglects the single biggest need for the Colts: cornerback. The corner situation is atrocious and I will be shocked if the Colts do not pick a corner at 33, particularly if Dennard or Minnifield fall out of the first round. In fact, whereas you have the Colts picking two receivers, I see two corners: one in the second and one in the fourth.

The reason the Colts offense cannot sustain drives is they have terrible quarterback play. If there were even an average quarterback under center the Colts would be at 5-7 wins. The secondary is the problem, particularly since Jerraud Powers cannot stay healthy. Lacy is fine as a nickle or dime back but does not have the size to guard primary receivers. I will be shocked if the Colts don’t take a corner until 7th round because it neglects the single biggest need on the team in a draft heavy with great corner talent.

Second, the Colts will often draft defense in the early rounds if they feel that’s where the needs are. Dwight Freeney and Marlin Jackson were first round picks. Kelvin Hayden, Fili Moala, and Pat Angerer were all second round picks.

I also doubt the Colts will draft a DT in the early or mid rounds. Believe it or not, the Colts are actually 12th against the run in the league. That’s actually right where the run D needs to be. This is also a weak DT class. Finally, Ollie Ogbu has managed to stick with the Colts practice squad during a seasons of a ton of shuffling. That tells me the coaches and front office really like him and want to see how he can do.

Why get 2 WRs???

We need O-Line help and CBs more than anything, I like the Dwight Jones pick in the second round but would be happy with Chase Minniefield or even Alfonso Dennard if he falls to us.

Agree

While I think this is one of the deepest WRs class in a while, I would like to see a CB/SS taken somewhere in the first 3 rds. There are no Calvin Johnsons/Larry Fitzgeralds in this draft, but it is loaded with big, fast, strong WRs who project well, which is exactly the type of WR the Colts should be looking at. The only way I would grab two WRs is if one of them was Blackmon to go along with a project WR taken later.

by shastamasta on Dec 21, 2011 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

While you’ll probably see a CB in the first three rounds, I doubt you’ll see a SS. This SS class isn’t much better than last year and Barron is getting a bit overrated. Barron won’t be a Sanders/Polamalu game-changer. He’ll probably top out as a good-not-great SS

The first three rounds

Are all First round Picks

With Poe maybe being the exception to slip into the second round.

must draft a stud corner.

the colts are in great shape in the LB spot…would like to see them get a safety too. I would say no drafting another OL too.
Draft luck with number one pick
and its hard to predict who the colts resign and let go but for sure they need to draft a corner and or safety very badly.

by supercolts on Dec 21, 2011 6:21 PM EST reply actions

Although, you defended it in your post

not focusing on defense enough is the worst thing if we are drafting Luck. How many years will go by into Luck career if we do pick him to rejuvenate our defense? The biggest need is cornerbacks and that’s not even addressed truly. Once ( If, the pick is done yet) Luck is in town next draft our top 2 pick whether TE or WR will be built around helping Luck. Besides no cornerback taken nice

Wide Receiver Concerns

Very well done. I look forward to your future articles about the draft.

I do have a concern though. After researching your picks, I’ve found that the two receivers in your draft have very limited abilities to break off big runs after the catch. One of Garcon’s greatest attributes is his ability to turn a simple slant pass into a large gain with his shifty moves and strength. It seems the Colts offense in recent years has preferred these types of players.
